2024 RB Lotto Ticket Rankings (3 Viewers)

Footballguy
And we're back!
In 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 we had a thread that folks seemed to find valuable so I am starting another version for 2024 - it's a living, ongoing list of potential

King Makers at RB
- the idea is to be PREEMPTIVE on RBs most likely sitting on the Waiver Wire or last rounds of draft (depending upon league size, sharks or guppies, etc.). The definition of this thread is generally re-draft.

To paraphrase @TZMarkie from 2016: "This is for re-draft and we are looking for the ones with the best combination of availability, upside and possibility of a big workload. That combination would likely give the average owner the best chance at hitting the "lottery ticket RB" that could change an owners season...The point is, regardless of however you see it, and whatever your league preference and/or breakdown may be, in most cases a typical owner (think redraft with 5-7 bench spots) will only be able to truly "take a shot" on one or two of these guys".

To paraphrase @Interseptopus from 2019: "A lotto ticket, to me, costs almost nothing, and is easily expendable for the next lotto ticket, but has potential to win you your season. ... Lotto tickets, in my mind, are easily cut from one week to the next."

Editor note about the spirit of this list: While TZMarkie and Interseptopus defined "what a LOTTO is" opinions and league sizes vary. This list is meant to be a cast a wide net review as a tool to make your own judgement calls. Then make your own rankings. Please share if you're willing. Some RBs are included in the event of a very shallow league. Others are included in case a frustrated owner drops him during a bye week crunch. Again, wide net.

This all above ^ is a quote pulled from @daylight too :)

CANDIDATES for the Season Changing – KingMaker List - by division
I'll Bold the Kingmakers and Green the better of the likely RBBC
As of Sunday Aug 4th.

AFC East
  • BUF
    • Ray Davis - 3 down potential. BUF as a whole is pegged to trend down offensively but still likely to be top half offense and you do have Josh Allen to vulture TDs. If James Cook gets injured, I believe they will instantly give him RB2 status and he might even have some value as a flex if BUF is better than expected.
  • MIA
    • Jaylen Wright- Offense predicts to be in top 10. He also has Achane aka small bones and Mostert aka old bones ahead of him. Injury to either both are a road to increase production fantasy relevant as a RB2/Flex. Feels overlooked for some reason.
  • NEP
    • Antonio Gibson- He has done it in the past but this offense doesn't seem to be productive enough, I would just monitor and save your pick on higher upside.
  • NYJ
    • Braelon Allen- a must draft if you get Breece and also a solid high upside pick if you don't have Breece.
AFC North
  • BAL
    • Justice Hill meh you should love yourself more than picking him
    • Keaton Mitchell he is the glass cannon, could be Devon Achane lite
  • CIN
    • Chase Brown/Zack Moss.
  • CLE
    • Jerome Ford inherent starter he wasn't a home run but was a RB2/Flex and now its an easy pick for early season boost to your roster.
    • D'Onta Foreman (INJ)
  • PIT
    • Najae Harris/Jaylen Warren, I don't know if they qualify. More of an ambiguous backfield, I like to pick whoever is last
AFC South
  • HOU
    • Dameon Pierce middling handcuff, not sure why he stunk so bad last year even before the injury we had like 8 weeks of garbage. I would just monitor.
  • IND
    • Trey Sermon handcuff to JT, good enough for me to be a last pick shoot for the moon guy or you can monitor since he hasn't really ever done it and I don't think others are intrigued.
  • JAC
    • Tank Bigsby stunk last year, but I will be monitoring since maybe he was just not mentally ready as a rookie.
  • TEN
    • Tyjae Spears This offense isn't great but if Will Levis plays better, I like the odds that spears will be worth having. I think Tony Pollard isn't a strong RB. I think Spears has the Kingmaker all over him and really is a 1B if not 1A by end of August. Keep watch
AFC West
  • DEN
    • Jaleel McLaughlin - He is quick but DEN offense is bottom 3, really should monitor similar glass cannon archetype
    • Audric Estime - again I would just monitor
  • KCC
    • Deneric Prince - The best bet to be the next Pacheco, monitor or even handcuff if you get Pacheco on team
    • Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Darkhorse, what if Prince can't pass protect? Mahomes needing to be protected is #1
  • LVR
    • Dylan Laube - Never heard of him TBH and this is why I love the thread. He is a pass catching specalist and might be supplanting Ameer Abdullah. This backfield seems destined for RBBC
    • Alexander Mattison he seems to be uninspiring, but monitor
  • LAC
    • Kimani Vidal - Here is the thing about this group collectively I think this is a timeshare trap, they all have their perks, but I would save the picks, Herbert is also injured and this Offense is no where near top 10 like it used to.
    • J.K. Dobbins - Monitor
    • Gus Edwards - Monitor
NFC East
  • DAL
    • Rico Dowdle - Good pick for 2nd half surge? Maybe ultimately should let someone else draft and then trade into the season, Zeke will fizzle each week and the Offense is top 10 so trade for him when the owner is tired of the RBBC.
  • NYG
    • Tyrone Tracy Jr. - never heard of him TBH and this is why I love the thread. Could take over three-down duties, He supplanted Eric Gray from last year and Singletery could wear down, but the Offense might be too bad. Monitor tho
  • PHI
    • Kenneth Gainwell -
    • Will Shipley - the better bet, but still only monitor.
  • WAS
    • Chris Rodriguez Jr. - Monitor in case Ekeler and Brian Robinson go down, seems to be a JAG.
NFC North
  • CHI
    • Roschon Johnson - Valuable if Swift and/or Herbert get injured but monitor
  • DET
    • David Montgomery - Not breaking news, but he would be a RB1 if Gibbs goes down.
  • GBP
    • MarShawn Lloyd - This is more of he is at least not AJ Dillon.
    • AJ Dillon
  • MIN
    • Ty Chandler - This feels borderline imo. I feel it is logical but this team is gonna stink.
NFC South
  • ATL
    • Tyler Allgeier- Must Draft. kind of an exception to my top offense, but he has great situation if Bijan were to go down.
  • CAR
    • Chubba Hubbard
    • Miles Sanders
  • NO
    • Kendre Miller(INJ)
  • TBB
    • Bucky Irving Raachad White handcuff
NFC West
  • ARI
    • Trey Benson- James Conner handcuff. Offense could definitely surprise.
  • LAR
    • Blake Corum- similar to Pacheco I believe Corum is a must draft for Kyren owners
  • SF
    • Eli Mitchell- Must Draft. He is great same as last year easiest kingmaker
    • Jordan Mason
  • SEA
    • Zach Charbonnet- I'll prolly be in this line for too long, but I like him a lot again.
  • Notable Free Agents

    • Dalvin Cook
    • Jerick McKinnon
    • Kareem Hunt
20 in total, I'm sure there are more. Feel free to shout out anyone missed or wanting to endorse. Again this is super early and Preseason should start shifting their ADPs, but I feel good about who is highlighted enough to at least monitor closely and draft.

Thanks for doing this again - a great annual thread that helped uncover some gems that many of my league mates overlooked.

Looks like you covered most, if not all, of the bases here. I’m sure some will emerge in the next few weeks.

  • LVR
    • Dylan Laube - Never heard of him TBH and this is why I love the thread. He is a pass catching specalist and might be supplanting Ameer Abdullah. This backfield seems destined for RBBC
Blind resume. Player A had 68 receptions at the college level in 2023. Player B had 67.

Player A is Laube. Player B is Marv. Laube was drafted by the same exec that brought you Ekeler and Danny Woodhead. He's bigger than both of those guys were when they entered the league (not where they ended up). Is he going to give you top 10 RB seasons like they did? Probably not. Is he a better receiver than Marv? Lol no. Is he a balding, old white guy? Absolutely. I think he's got some upside. Neither Woodhead nor Ek was drafted, so 6th round draft capital is actually good for the profile.

My thoughts....
Blake Corum- starting to be too obvious and cost a little something but yes... he's a good option
Any Charger- similar to Steelers/Bengals where its more uncertain backfield but if one guy takes it, lookout
Eli Mitchell- Any league where I can just stash these guys for a rainy day and need 0 points, this is the guy I want to be holding
Pierce- Mixon seems already hurt and he goes even later than most of these guys
Ray Davis- exactly what OP said, although I wish Ty Johnson would go away
Bucky Irving- Clear #2 on a team that seems to pick a guy.... likely useless until he's not, but if White ever misses a game he will rank highly
Allgeier- Nobody knows whats going on in Atlanta ever, but at worse he's in the "needs an injury" group
Bigsby- Same as Bucky for situation, but I'll list him lower because last year was gross
Braelon Allen- Probably should be higher, but Jets RB room confuses me
Trey Sermon- Big upside in event of JT injury, but instead he's hurt again

Who's Eli? You mean Adonai?

I like the Corum, Davis and Allen picks. The rest not so much.

Braelon Allen- Probably should be higher, but Jets RB room confuses me
Nothing really to be confused about. It’s totally Breece’s backfield, but if heaven forbid he got hurt, Allen would probably be in line for a heavy workload.

I agree about Allen, but predicting injuries is a losing proposition.
Of course - just talking about late round fliers to fill out roster spots as opposed to relying on them.

Detroit

Of course Monty takes a big leap if Jah misses time because of his hammy (Campbell will update today.) The reverse is also true - if David misses any time during the year, check out the tape from the Raiders MNF win last year.

But don’t sleep on 4th round pick Sione Vaki. He’s not even a last round pick in redraft at this point, but in dynasty he’s worth a stash if you have big rosters. He’s having a good camp and looked great in PS Week 1 @ NYG.

At Utah he played both S and RB. He went to the combine and tested with the DBs. 31 teams thought he would make a good Day 3 pick for a DB. Detroit traded up because Campbell & Holmes said they would feel sick if they left the draft without him - and to everyone’s surprise, including Vaki, they announced the pick (#132) as a running back. He has exclusively played HB since OTAs.

Utah stats (12 G, 693 snaps at SS, 76 at HB):
  • 51 tackles (37 solo)
  • 1 INT, 2 PBU
  • 2 sacks
  • 8.5 (-37) TFL
  • 1-16 on KR
  • Receiving 11-203-16.9-3
  • Rushing 42-317-7.6-2
  • PFF grade 94.0 on offense
8.54 RAS

4 carries for 29 yards in his debut.

Sione Vaki's juke moves disorient Giants defenders

Craig “Netflix” Reynolds, who scored a TD on 4th & 1 in the divisional round playoff game, probably has RB3 on lockdown. For now.

Vaki is competing with Jermar Jefferson, a 2021 day 3 pick who has spent almost all of his career on the practice squad (think he played once as a rookie.) Both are having a really good camp, drawing praise from Campbell and OC Ben Johnson. Snap counts in WK 1:
  • Zonovan Knight 20
  • Jake Funk 15
  • Vaki 12
  • JJ 9
I would interpret that as less usage = more secure, more snaos = on the roster bubble.

He has some wiggle, and could aches love him. They also trust Craig so it’s gonna be tough for him to see the field, but he is 100% going to make the team as they love him on ST (4-phase guy.)

One to monitor for now. I have a feeling they gave a play package just for him.

Great thread! Thx (y)

Any truth to the rumor that Herbert is being showcased for possible trade? Would love to see him in Dallas. Asking for a Roschon truther/homer.

Should we replace Kimani Vidal with Jarret Patterson on the chargers? He seems to be the Dobbins arbitrage play as of now.

Great work @Hartliner

AFC East
  • BUF
    • I agree that Ray Davis is the back-to-monitor here. Cook is undersized, and Davis could pair up as the thunder to Cook's lightning. Frank Gore, Jr. has the bloodlines and the right attitude to stick, but he is fighting for a roster spot.
  • MIA
    • Again, I agree with @Hartliner 's pick of Jaylen Wright. The speedster out of Tennessee is a direct handcuff to Mostert, but Achane will continue to be a force. I like the idea of grabbing a piece of this offense.
  • NEP
    • I want to like Kevin Harris, but it looks like he will be mere depth for the Pats behind Stevenson and Gibson.
  • NYJ
    • Braelon Allen is the backup to own here, but he probably won't have a lot of stand-alone value
AFC North
  • BAL
    • Keaton Mitchell is worth a look. There has been no buzz around Rasheen Ali, but he has some lotto ticket qualities.
  • CIN
    • Beyond Brown and Moss, not much to see here
  • CLE
    • There is nothing to see here
  • PIT
    • This is the Harris-Warren show
AFC South
  • HOU
    • Jawhar Jordan is worth monitoring as a depth piece with some upside
  • IND
    • I've been fooled before by Sermon, but now that he costs nothing, why not? That said, I thought Evan Hull looked good.
  • JAC
    • God help the Jags if Etienne gets injured
  • TEN
    • Julius Chestnut is the lotto ticket to monitor.
AFC West
  • DEN
    • This is a crowded (and talented) RB room. Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime are definitely worth rostering, but how the touches are distributed is anyone's guess. Blake Watson is a depth piece to monitor.
  • KCC
    • Carson Steele has some Pacheco qualities to him. I don't know if he will even make the final roster, but he runs like his hair is on fire, and you gotta love that. I am excited to watch Louis Rees-Zammit, but his value for the Chiefs, if he makes the cut, will be as a returner.
  • LVR
    • Dylan Laube is the reserve RB I am watching here.
  • LAC
    • While your teammates are smitten with Kimani Vidal's college tape (and I am still on this train), you might want to zag toward Jaret Patterson.
NFC East
  • DAL
    • Beyond Zeke and Dowdle, I am probably taking a pass. Deuce Vaughn is on the roster bubble, I hear, but his receiving ability makes him at least enticing. I was really hoping the Cowboys could find a role for the former K-State standout.
  • NYG
    • Tyrone Tracy Jr. is probably the back to own behind Singletary. (Update: after an injury scare, it is now reported he is "week-to-week".) If you are looking beyond Tracy (I am probably not), Eric Gray and Dante "Turbo" Miller are the backs to keep your eyes on.
  • PHI
    • Gainwell and Shipley provide depth, but Kendall Milton is a name to monitor.
  • WAS
    • I agree that Chris Rodriguez Jr. is worth at least monitoring as a potential short-term plugin
NFC North
  • CHI
    • Herbert and Johnson are very capable reserves behind an oft-injured Swift
  • DET
    • Gibbs and Montgomery should get all the work, and Craig Reynolds is a reliable reserve. Jermar Jefferson showed some promise early on, but he is now fighting for a roster spot.
  • GBP
    • MarShawn Lloyd should be rostered
  • MIN
    • Jones and Chandler may share the load
NFC South
  • ATL
    • Tyler Allgeier is one of the top handcuffs
  • CAR
    • Chuba and Sanders will revert to backups once Brooks is ready to take the reigns
  • NO
    • Kamara is on the downside of his career. Jamaal Williams and Kendre Miller should each get some reps
  • TBB
    • Bucky Irving is the obvious lotto ticket here, but don't forget about Sean Tucker.
NFC West
  • ARI
    • Trey Benson could be more than just a handcuff, but holdover Emari Demercado and former Jet Michael Carter are also jockeying for touches.
  • LAR
    • Blake Corum is a top handcuff, but don't lose sight of veteran Boston Scott
  • SF
    • Jordan Mason is the reserve to own here, IMO. If you are seeking a lotto ticket, check out Isaac Guerendo.
  • SEA
    • No real lottery tickets behind Walker and Charbonnet

I think CEH is actually going to take the McKinnon role. I don't think he would be the guy even if Pacheco got hurt. He has value in best ball, but I don't think I could ever trust him enough to start him in a regular league.

Figured I’d share this since I already have in the preseason thread, but I’m still in on the Sean Tucker agenda as a deep lotto ticket with kingmaker upside.

But don’t sleep on 4th round pick Sione Vaki. He’s not even a last round pick in redraft at this point, but in dynasty he’s worth a stash if you have big rosters. He’s having a good camp and looked great in PS Week 1 @ NYG.

Redraft - disregard unless the Lions have more than one RB injured

Dynasty - you need to add Sione Vaki

Taxi squad for 2024
No room, even in dynasty. Can’t roster everyone you want to.

Understood, and there is no urgency. Just a heads up to file away.

Redraft PPR RB129
Dynasty PPR outside the Top 150

Just a dart throw, if you’re not interested no worries, I’m not getting a vig off it lol

I really like Vaki but would have to drop Kendre Miller. I think if Miller can ever get and stay healthy he is better option but my patience is wearing thin.

Its been weeks since an update and I rehauled the list to include @socrates much welcomed contributions to make this list more complete.
I also bolded some, added their .5 ppr AVG RB rank per Fantasypros and labeled the top #5 RBs you should target in draft.

I also kind of hate that I included some platoon or inherent know starter RBs like D. Montgomery, Jerome Ford, Chase Brown, Zack Moss, Najae Harris, Jaylen Warren, Tyjae Spears, Rico Dowdle, Chubba Hubbard, Jaleel Mclaughlin, JK Dobbins Gus Edwards. They have all since been edited out of the list.

AFC East
  • BUF: Ray Davis (53) #4 3 Down back on a Great Offense

I updated for the cuts today. Why not!? Slow day at the office!

Craig Reynolds is still the RB3 for now

In 2023, even with Gibbs missing 2 g and Monty 3g, he had 41 rush att & 5 receptions

Vaki is a far better receiver but if only one of the duo is missing, the RB3 more likely than not won’t see much increase in utilization

There’s a world in which the unbelievably inexperienced Sione carves out a Jamo type role:
  • 5 or less touches most weeks
  • impactful but inconsistent
  • worth rostering w/ large benches but at best a what-the-heck flex hoping for a splash play or TD
  • long term he might be a productive player; for 2024, I think the coaches just want to get him more reps and let him develop

Great stuff. And always enjoy these updates. I have Davis and Wright sitting at the end of my bench, and will likely have to cut one before the season kicks off for a kicker. Holding both for now, but both opportunities will be tough to figure. I do own James Cook in the same league, so I guess it will come down to whether I want to own my own handcuff or someone else’s… barring an odd camp/practice injury.

Great way to show the update that the cuts had.

Pierre Strong has appeal, but I'm stil unconvinced he would be more than a flex. Not a Kingmaker.

Jordan Mason, however get the bump to a top Kingmaker Lotto.

Lloyd is an even better stash if he gets IR now that AJ Dillon is out of picture.

Dameon Pierce is intriguing, thought he would be traded.

Also I reupdated the list above.

Grab Mason if you can, is the main takeaway.

Cam Akers might actually be an interesting one for Houston, looks like he made the team.

Also in for Akers, his PS action was posted in his thread I think.

Also Evan Silva who was talking up Pierce has now backed way off that with the news Piece isn’t picking up the offense well

I get the appeal of both considering it's likely a good offense with a shaky (already banged up?) starter, but also Mixon has good track record of getting himself out there on Sundays and doing the things coaches care about to stay on the field. I would keep both on the list for "what if" scenario, but pretty far behind others in terms of likelihood.

14 in total. Feel free to shout out anyone missed or wanting to endorse. I feel good about who is highlighted enough to at least monitor closely and draft. Maybe I can do this again after 4 weeks into season or if a slew of injuries hit.

I updated for the cuts today. Why not!? Slow day at the office!
Hartliner, I'm glad you were born.

Agreed. I picked up Mason off the WW after reading this thread, was able to move Brooks to an IR spot so had the roster spot available.

We have a short bench (only 5 spots) and roster only 168 players (including K and DST) so if you're wondering how he was still available, that's why.

To me, Jordan Mason is the number one handcuff. I think he is a more talented runner than Eli Mitchell and he can put up better numbers than him even given the chance.

I really like what I am seeing out of Braelon Allen. Even though he is not physically capable of catching a football, I think he could have some Lataveous Murray (Vikings), Brandon Jacobs (Giants) value. If given the opportunity, 10+ TDs is reasonable.

Lastly, sign me up for Tyler Allgeier. I think he is a better running back than Robinson (blasphemy, I know) and you do not need to spend the 2nd or 3rd overall pick on him.
