2024 Year-End Song Draft - 280 songs of the year (1 Viewer)

1. As If Waltz — Geordie Greep

Warning before you listen: The lyrics are a little weird. A theme of this album is desperation and the character in this song is desperate for a prostitute in a brothel to love him back. As the listener, Geordie wants you to be a little repulsed but also have some pity for the character. It's also supposed to be funny. All these emotions really add to the enjoyment of the song for me.

Sorry, not sorry for the length of this song. I hope you don't check out before the killer outro! 👨‍🍳 💋

Some of you may recall me picking the band black midi in MAD 2. Greep was the frontman for that band and wrote about "80%" of their music on their three albums. I knew he'd eventually end the band to do his own thing creatively but I didn't know it would be so soon. He is my favorite artist of this generation and, at 25 years old, I feel like he's just getting started!

This song is epic.

Glad you like it! Was this your first time hearing it?

Spotify bogarted this release from me, so I only learned about it at the mid year draft... I think from an Eephus pick? And I like Foals... Tanks fee nuttin, Spotify.

2. Rain Can't Reach Us- Yannis and The Yaw

Day 1 - Selection 2 (ranked #19 of 20)

Beyoncé - Texas Hold 'Em

While many tradional Country Music fans or purists hated this song, it opened up a new audience to that genre of music.

Fun Facts: "Texas Hold 'Em" was an international commercial success and marked several historical achievements. In the United States, it topped the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Beyoncé's ninth solo number one single. Additionally, the song debuted atop the Hot Country Songs chart, making Beyoncé the first Black woman with a number-one country song in Billboard history.

Outside of the United States, "Texas Hold 'Em" topped the singles charts in several countries including Belgium (Flanders), Canada, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, as well as the Billboard Global 200, earning Beyoncé her first number-one song and the first ever country song to do so since that chart's inception in 2020. The song also peaked within the top ten of the charts in other various countries.

2. Compass, Sail North

Who doesn’t love Celtic shanty pop?

Twelve years had gone as a wandering man
Searching for meaning in far distant lands
Defied kings and queens and with foes, raised a glass
And fell for an outlaw named Katie McMahon
Oh, we sailed the sea seeking mountains of gold
And fountains of youth from the stories of old
Escaped from the perils and monsters below
But after it all, we had nothin' to show
Then Katy said, "My love
Our journey's just begun"
"We can make our way back home
I'm here with you, you're not alone
I'll fight with you 'til our last breath
To follow the compass that beats in our chest"

Day 1 - Counting down with #20 of my Top 20 for the year 2024.

The Lemon Twigs - My Golden Years

My favorite retro 60's/70's band.

This has been described as The Byrds "My Back Pages" meets "Pet Sounds" era Beach Boys.

The Lemon Twigs are an American rock band from Long Island, New York, fronted by brothers Brian and Michael D'Addario.

Good lord, never had this many so fast

Hey Eeph. I didn't get this @ for some reason. I was just checkin' in to hear some first rounders, but wth, I'll throw up some new oddities and obscurities I've enjoyed this year to keep it fresh.

The summer heat in the desert caused me to stop hiking in it and start pedaling indoors. I discovered the below on a playlist specifically for spinning your stationary wheels. It works.

1. Stonebwoy - JeJereJe

1.am Peter Perrett - Disinfectant
Thanks so much for adding this. Not for this song (although it's good), but more as a prompt for me to do a little digging on Peter Perrett (side note: I hope that his last name is pronounced parrot).

All these years and I never knew that "Another Girl, Another Planet" by the Mighty Lemon Drops on Vol. V of the Just Say Yes series (Sire records) was a cover!
It's actually from Peter Perrett's band The Only Ones (1978). Here's the original.
