2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (3 Viewers)

NewlyRetired

Footballguy
This thread is intended to be a temporary thread that lasts through out the summer to aggregate all the tournament talk in one location.

The focus will be on the largest group of international games in one summer, in my life time.

We will be following the European Championship, The Super Copa America and the Olympics, along with various World Cup Qualifiers.

The next three posts will be reserved for information that I will post about each tournament (dates, teams, locations, venues, networks showing games etc etc).

Friendlies for all 3 tournaments are happening now with preliminary rosters being parred down to final rosters in short order.

In a friendly last night, Uruguay trounced Mexico 4-0 in Denver and the game had to be abandoned (it was basically over anyway) when fans ran on to the field.

England just improved their chances of winning by sending home Graelish, Maddison, and HARRY MAGUIRE!
I know they always find some way to disappoint, but England is so loaded. If they can get over what ever mental block they have, they could be in position for a possible Euro/WC double.

Bielsa admonishes Mexico for not taking the game seriously. https://x.com/i/status/1798562841588580465

From the clips I saw, it was a walk in the park. Regardless, we will be a substantial underdog to Uruguay. Hopefully we come into that game with 6 points in the bank.

That last game is going to be huge. If things go to form, both teams should have 6 points and both would be through to the quarter finals, but the last group game should still have a large importance because the team that comes in second very likely gets fed to Brazil in the quarter finals.

Here are some US specific questions we hope to get answers to this summer:

1) Who starts at RB?

2) If Adams is or gets hurt, can Johnny replicate his club form on the big stage?

3) How long to stick with Balogun if he is not clicking?

4) Who will partner Chris Richards?

5) Will GGG have the willingness to change up the lineup based on need?

The most offensive lineup we can have has Weah at RB, Tillman at RW, and Gio and Weston in the midfield
A more defensive lineup would be Scally at RB, Weah at RW, MMA in the midfield.

Hopefully we come into that game with 6 points in the bank.

But we want to play teams like Brazil, right? Isn't that kind of the whole point of why we're in this thing this year?

Yes but we also very much need as many games as possible since we have no qualification games. So while we do want to play a Brazil, we much more want to play them in the semi finals so that we can get at least one more game in.

Note that we also will be playing Brazil in the friendly after the Colombia game as the last warm up game.

I HATE looking ahead in these tournaments before its even started so don't want to go much further on this, but if form holds perfectly according to odds and expectations, the winner of our group likely gets Colombia in Glendale Arizona and the runner up of our group gets Brazil in Las Vegas. The winners of those two games play each other in the semifinal. Colombia will be a tough game but we'd have to expect it to be much more winnable than Brazil so if the goal is to win a knockout game and reach the semifinal in this tournament, it would be fantastic if we could somehow win the group.

One thing we'll all be thinking about is that goal differential in those first two games might be very important.

Belgium being underrated in the odds? They always disappoint, but still look to have a lot of talent in the squad.
