2025 Detroit Lions: 1-1 Lion crush Da Bears. Still seats available on the Bandwagon. (159 Viewers)

Serious question to all Lions fans what were you thinking about your team 2022 season after week 8 they were 1-6? I can't imagine most thought Campbell was their man.
I remember how emotionally invested Dan was when they were losing. I remember him literally tearing up at the podium after a loss…I knew at that point how much he cared and would pour everything he had into it to do what he could to turn things around. That is not necessarily the reason for the turnaround, but he won my respect because you could tell the guy cared beyond words and wanted success so badly for the talent voided squad (at the time) that was fighting like heck to get a win.

Dan puts his heart and soul into everything about this team. That is why there are more players around the league who want to play for Dan than any other coach. The Lions have an awesome GM, the coaching staff is amazing and Dan is the glue which holds it all together.

It is popular with the pundits to call Dan a knucklehead, but the truth is just the opposite. He is heavily influenced by metrics much more so than other coaches, but also knows his teams strengths and weaknesses and adjusts accordingly.

But Dan relished the role as a knucklehead. That is how Dan was able to pull off that forth down play and draw the Vikings offsides. There was no way the Lions were going to snap that ball, but the view that MCDC just might be that dumb convinced the Vikings the Lions were actually going for it. No other team could have fooled anyone.

Looks like the Lions have regained the betting lead in current futures.

I don't know if I would use the word dumb enough, to me it's more like crazy enough. The Lions definitely keep other teams and coaches off balance because they aren't just going to make the standard moves or play it by the book. Anything is on the table any down. Even though the PA Pass on 4th and inches didn't work, it lets teams know that they can't sell out against the run on short yardage becaue just like they will run the ball on 3rd and long, they will throw the ball on 4th and inches. The whole playbook is always open.

I didn't buy it when everyone was ####ting on the Lions before last night, and I don't buy it now. This is a very good team. They're more than capable of winning it all. They also have a ton of injuries that they'll need to overcome. Beyond that, I'm not wasting any time worrying about what people think of them

I see what you are saying but I'm not sure I would lump the betting pools in with the hot take media. I'm pretty sure those loud mouth cretins don't actually put their money where their mouths are because most would end up broke.

My two favorite pictures of Aaron Glenn during the 2024 season.

On the left, so locked in during the dominant win over the Packers he doesn't even know it's raining. On the right, a man satisfied he just cooked.

Assistant Coach of the Year. Future HMFIC. What an incredible year he has had holding this defense together.
Not only should Aaron Glenn be assistant coach of the year, it should be unanimous. What he has done with this defense given the ridiculous number of injuries is nothing short of amazing.

Aaron Glenn gets a standing ovation at the Pistons game tonight. That’s special- how many teams DC would get this kind of love?

Very cool that the 100 people in attendance showed their appreciation to AG.
Believe it or not, the Pistons have strong attendance. Last year they averaged 18,000 per game, and 15th best in the league. I’m sure attendance is pretty good now that they are a .500 team and Cade has officially arrived as a star.

That surprises me.

Went to two games last season and the LCA was half empty both times, or at least looked that way. Not all the places were open inside either like at Red Wing games.

Sheila Hamp did. Came out publicly and said she knows the fans are frustrated, but we have the right guys in place.

She started this whole culture shift. When she and Chris Spielman began this after firing Patricia two days after Thanksgiving, the core values were put in place. Then they found the two guys who embodied what they wanted to be as an organization.

Dan gets the glory and Brad is highly regarded, but it all started with the owner deciding they had to embrace their woeful past. She is the reason they’re all about accountability, collaboration, frank assessment, openness, transparency.

Sounds cheesy but they wanted the building to be a place that was a great place to work. The messaging is consistent and communication is clear from the top down. It’s a franchise that really does want people to be themselves so they can become the best version of themselves. That level of quality leadership is not an automatic thing, it’s not like that everywhere.
Every owner and gm tend to come out and support their HC especially when he's fairly new and early in the season. I was asking the question towards the Lions fans.

Case in point.

Here is the discussion we were having the first week of October (2022), when the team was 1-3 - and Campbell was 4-16-1 as the head coach.

Read it for yourself.

They were a month out from turning it around (of course no one knew that), but there were a lot of things to be positive about.

What do y’all think about this team moving forward? Arguably they could easily be at least 4-3. Seems like there is a decent base here.
The argument there is that the team is just used to losing and the entire organization embraces them as lovable losers, there’s enough info here to suggest that Detroit will never figure it out until there’s huge changes with ownership

I wish there was a counter argument.

MCDC probably cost them a few games with questionable coaching. Likeable guy, hell everyone loves him. You want to see him succeed. But that positive vibes motivational **** only goes so far. I'm not sure he has earned another season but they'll likely give him another shot.

As @Zeppelin pointed out, they're midstream in a complete tear down. Best to stay the course with Brad Holmes. He's drafted a few too many injury prone guys (legit complaint - same injuries from college cropped up again), signed Chark whose surgically repaired ankle still ain't right. To be fair he has uncovered some Day 3 gems, UDFAs and signed low cost veterans. IMO he deserves a full 5-6 year cycle to see where this ends up. He probably also deserves to be able to pick his own coach as Campbell was hired 6 days after he was.

But let's be real - they have never gotten it right in 65 years, and the Ford's first joined ownership in 1960 and bought out the other owners on the day JFK was shot. They are the common thread to this historically inept franchise.

@Zeppelin

whew boy....that was a rough couple of months to start 2022, eh?

Heard that DC might be making some staff changes. Presser at 2:15.

Glenn is sure to be the first fall guy if changes are made. Much like Lynn last season.
Lion fans are probably glad this didn't happen.

We are now....

Back then they were giving up 35 a game and wanted him to get bounced

Amazing how much smarter AG became after he had some talent to work with, eh

Hey Walt, I was disappointed in 1-6 but realistic enough to recognize the crap he was given by the prior GM and HC. Like others said here, I noticed the increased effort and not giving up, while scores were closer than projected. I was patient for these reasons.

“You don’t want to turn the engine off, but just let it idle.”

- Dan Campbell on bye week preparations

Not a lot going on in Allen Park this week. Players don’t have to come in until Thursday. Will have a light practice, no pads, for about an hour, on the 9th. Three day weekend for everyone, including the coaching staff.

Injury news:
  • David Montgomery will play the Division Round.
  • Positive News on Terrion Arnold and Kevin Zeitler.
  • Doesn’t look as good for DL Pat O’Connor.
  • Declined to give anything more specific until next week.
  • Does not expect any other players to return from IR.
  • Does not expect Derrick Barnes or Carlton Davis III to return at any time this year.
  • WRT Aidan Hutchinson: “He has a season ending injury. He does. I’m not going to say anything more. Except this: I wouldn’t bet against him.”
Opened the press conference giving everyone flowers, starting with the fans who were loud and electric, highlighted several defensive, offensive and special teams players. Went on at length about the defense, best performance of the year.

Said “If nobody wants him, I’d love to have Aaron Glenn back. But the thought of another NFL season without AG being a head coach somewhere is ridiculous. He can do everything. He understands defense, offense, special teams, he’s an excellent communicator, motivating, he’s inspirational. I don’t want to lose him, but I’m rooting for the guy.”

Said Assistant Head Coach Scottie Montgomery is in front of the team every week and is another one who is a head coach candidate.

No advance game plan work this week, he’s not going to have the staff do work they’ll never need. Three of the possible opponents they played this year so they have a good baseline to work from. Washington is the only team they haven’t seen so they’ll do some film breakdown but not a full work up .

Wants everyone to enjoy the week off. They’ve earned it.

Justin Rogers notes from Dan Campbell’s Tuesday presser:

Quick-hitting Campbell press conference notes:
- Campbell opens up making a strong case for Glenn to get a head job. Said it would be ridiculous if he's passed up this cycle.
- Players will practice Thursday, without pads. Campbell wants their engines idling and ready, but also wants them to enjoy the time off. Three-day weekends for both players and coaches.
- Campbell said the bye week helps for his coordinators to better manage head-coaching interviews.
- Campbell expects Montgomery back for the first playoff game. Said the team got good news on Arnold and Zeitler, but can't guarantee either will play in the Divisional round. News wasn't good on O'Connor. Campbell all but rules out Carlton Davis III and Derrick Barnes for the remainder of the year. Doesn't see either coming back. As for Hutchinson, calls it a season-ending injury, but won't rule out the defensive end defying the odds.

Missed the last Q & A as he was walking off…

“I do think there’s a chance we get [CB Ennis] Rake[straw] back, I do. He’s trending the right way.”

Someone asked Justin Rogers in the Substack chat “What are the odds we re-sign Carlton Davis?”

I'd lean below 50%, if I'm offering an honest assessment. It's a money thing. Lions 2026 cap is getting messy with all the big-money extensions. Not sure if they can fit in a top-10 CB salary that could threaten $20M per year.

Bye week interview requests:

Ben Johnson - Chicago, New England and Jacksonville

Aaron Glenn - Chicago, Jacksonville, New Orleans and NY Jets

In the past Glenn has taken every interview because he finds each experience valuable. Not sure if he'll change course and be more selective this year.

Hello @BobbyLayne - I was here @FBG for a good long while when I was an active FF player, posting on occasion. Stopped FF about 10y ago and disconnected from here fully about 5y ago. Born and raised in metro Detroit, life long Lions fan. Back here now and very appreciative of your activity and passing along Lions news constantly. Good on you!

Bummer about CD3

Justin mentioned it’s not completely surprising. He has not been around the facility since he broke his jaw.

(that in and of itself is not unusual - Hutch and Barnes have been around more lately, but much of their rehab has been outside the building. it varies by player. Emmanuel Moseley did all of his rehab - both seasons - in Allen Park. other players on IR go to where they live year round.

Taylor Decker spends February-July in the Phoenix area, e dept when he comes up for minicamp or OTAs; his trainer lives there, and they bought a house there to be near that specific gym, which caters to pro athletes.)

Thanks @RD1, appreciate you taking the time the for kind words.

Don’t be a stranger going forward. Always good to have a fresh perspective brought to the discussion.

Detroit Lions 2025 opponents per CBS Sports:

Home: Bears, Packers, Vikings, Cowboys, Giants, Buccaneers, Browns, Steelers
Away: Bears, Packers, Vikings, Eagles, Commanders, Rams, Bengals, Ravens, Chiefs

That road schedule is brutal.

One thing that might be in Lions favor is Davis counting this season has missed 24 games in his career due to injury so the market might not be red hot for him, and he loves it here.

Would like to have him back. Also how many games has Rakestraw played in> Almost forgot he was on the team.

think it's 46 snaps for the season without looking it up

so....more than Brodric?

Pretty sure Martins days are numbered here. DL was gutted with injuries and he still did not play. The game he did play he got pushed around like a blocking sled.

Brad Holmes traded three late round picks to move up to get him. Most teams had a 5th round grade on him.

13 of the 15 picks immediately before the 96th pick have become starters or significant contributors.

At least 11 Day 3 picks or UDFAs from the 2023 draft had more than 500 defensive snaps this year.

Hey, can't win 'em all.

Well Holmes thought he saw something in him..maybe big time run stuffer - clog the middle type that would develop. Obviously as of yet he has not developed. I stated this before when I went to a couple of open practices. Guys like McNeil are not ripped up but have heavier somewhat solid builds.

Martin in a t-shirt was just plain fat with rolls hanging. Looked so out of shape compared to other lineman. Thought a year working out and then off-season conditioning would help but when I read he said he lived to a Jets Pizza and ate there almost every night I knew that is not good.

As Meatloaf said and it applies to drafting..Two out of three aint bad. Holmes has been better than that.

2021 was a generational, franchise-altering draft: 2 All Pro, 3 Pro Bowl, 6 starters

2022 Hutch, Jamo, Kerby & more

2023 four starters, five Pro Bowls

2024 TBD but right now it's Terrion Arnold and a bunch of developmental projects
  • Rakestraw should be a plus starter if you watch his college tape
  • Manu is a mystery box developmental who may never pan out
  • Vaki is already super valuable as an ace STer, developmental as a RB
  • Mahogany will be a starter for sure
  • Wingo is a good rotational DL
  • Hatten is a UDFA stud LS
Throw in how awesome he has been at plugging holes with judicious FA, not once going for a big splash (which has a low ROI but some teams never figure that out), dude has been an A+ GM.

Plus he has locked up the core for years.

What do y’all think about this team moving forward? Arguably they could easily be at least 4-3. Seems like there is a decent base here.
What a genius this guy was

pretty sure I made a comment around then that was something along the lines of "Glenn has to go, Campbell is a good guy who is easy to root for but I don't think this will work out, at least we have Holmes, he should finish out his contract because he did have two good drafts."

it was a frustrating September - they started off averaging 35 ppg and lost 3 out of 4. Then in October they lost 29-0 to Bailey freaking Zappe (Pats), 31-27 to the 'fins, 24-6 at Dallas (it was actually really close and Jamaal fumbled on the GL.) They didn't score a point in the second half of those three October losses.

Fired Aubrey Pleasant. Traded Hockenson. I started watching again Week 8.

We beat the Packers 15-9. "You can't lose a game...to....those guys." - Aaron Rodgers. Haven't lost consecutive games since.

Conclusion: FBG BobbyLayne saved the franchise when he started watching games again & started posting heavily in this thread once more - after an eternity (nearly 3-4 weeks) away.

You're welcome, everyone.

Here's how the Detroit Lions will approach their postseason bye

Allen Park — The Detroit Lions earned this weekend off, and, by God, coach Dan Campbell intends to give his players, staff, and himself a brief breather before the team’s sprint to the finish line begins next week.

The Lions will practice once this week, a non-padded session on Thursday, before enjoying a long weekend away from the facility.

“Enjoy it, just sit back for a minute,” Campbell said he'll tell the players. “It’s really one of those things where, for the players, you just want to keep the engine idling. That’s probably the best way to say it. You don’t want to turn it off. Let’s just leave it in idle.

“…We’re going to bring them in Thursday, we’re going to go good-on-good at practice. Most of it will be situations; end of half, end of game. …It won’t be in pads but it will be end-of-game situations, probably an hour, just to stay in flow.”

It’s not a surprise the players are being given a long weekend to reset, but NFL coaches rarely get that kind of break. Still, Campbell wants his staff sharp, and without knowing who they're playing until late Sunday night at the earliest, he doesn’t want the assistants expending unnecessary energy preparing for multiple possibilities.

“I’ve been a part of it as a player and a coach,” Campbell said. “You don’t know who you’re playing so then you start doing — you do leg work on another opponent and then you find out it’s not that opponent. I don’t want to do that to the coaches.

“My plan is to give them off three days this weekend, refresh, get your sleep, get your rest,” Campbell continued. “We’re going to know, hopefully by Sunday night, and then we come in (Monday morning) and we’ll know the opponent. Then we are full force on that.”

With everyone else enjoying some downtime, Campbell is going to make sure he gets some, as well.

“I’m going to get a little bit of work over the next two days,” Campbell said. “Like I said, we’ll practice and then I plan on getting out of here a little bit. I’ll have stuff with me, and there will be some little things that I’m working on — things I know that I can do better, get better at, things that I want to look at, do my own checklist as it pertains to us like over the last five weeks, six weeks — but other than that, I want to spend time with my family and just sit back for a minute and just charge back up and be ready to go.”

The time off should prove particularly valuable for Detroit’s coordinators, Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson. It will allow them to focus on head-coaching interviews. Their window to conduct virtual interviews for those positions runs Wednesday through Sunday this week.

Had the Lions not received the bye, they’d be trying to juggle those opportunities while preparing for the upcoming opponent.

“I think that’s actually better,” Campbell said. “This time last year, they’re trying to do it, we didn’t have a bye or anything, and so you’re trying to get things — they’re trying to figure out ways to fit this in. You’d love to have the opportunity to go to the next thing, but you also have an obligation with the team you’re with. That’s impossible. That’s an impossible task.”

Glenn and Johnson are hot commodities for the six vacancies, with three teams requesting to talk to Detroit's offensive coordinator and Glenn drawing interest from four teams. With Las Vegas dismissing coach Antonio Pierce Tuesday afternoon, the request tally could grow for one or both.

Campbell offered a particularly strong endorsement for Glenn — who he brought to Detroit from New Orleans in 2021 — to open Tuesday’s media session.

“He’s as good a coach as you’re going to find, “ Campbell said. “He’s an even better human being. Look, if nobody wants him, I’ll take him again. I can tell you that right now. The thought of going through another cycle and he’s not somebody’s head coach is ridiculous. I mean this guy is as good as they come, and he can do it all. He understands how to manage a game, he understands offense, defense, special teams. He knows how to communicate. He understands discipline of players and he’s motivating, he’s inspiring.

“I don’t want to lose him, but I also root for the guy because I just think he’s a hell of a coach,” Campbell said.

Between AG and Ben I see AG wanting a HC job more. Although I have zero data to back that up. Just going by temperaments. If Lions give Ben another raise he might stay.

Campbell basically gave Glenn his verbal letter of recommendation to all the teams interested and without a doubt they are listening.

Well that's the way he should handle it. Ben is already regarded as a top candidate, maybe THE top candidate if you think your next HC has to be an offensive-minded guy to work with a young QB. He doesn't need an endorsement from anyone, he's been a hot name three years running.

AG, who has been Campbell's friend for a long time, is a fellow A&M alum, doesn't need a boost either, but he's a notch below Johnson in universal acclaim. He definitely put on a few masterclasses this year, notably the first Packers game in the rain, the second GB on TNF when he had four guys who just came in off the street playing the first series because of injuries, and Game 272 when the Vikings went 0-11 on Goal to Goal plays.

I actually think Glenn will be as good or better of a head coach as Johnson. He is a leader of men, that's a guy who was an All Pro stud player who has put I the time and worked his way up. Everything Dan said yesterday is true; there are no holes in the mans resume, he doesn't have any blind spots. I don't think anyone has done more to put themselves in a position to succeed than AG.

Off topic but Cade finally fit coming into a season and has made the jump.. 24pts 9.5 apg 7 rpg approx, efficiency going up, 3pt% up near 40% amazing what having just even decent experienced shooters that can space the floor around him. January alone he’s averaging around 32 ppg now back to 18-18 and coping thus far with Ivey out. I love that Cade plays the game at his pace, he’s not the most athletically gifted but he doesn’t need to be as his brain moves faster and his handles are decent. Weirdly free throw shooting % down.

Next step… get better when getting to the rim and inside paint, and hopefully as star gets bigger get more fouls called !! Would fit in with the Lions as he is humble, professional and non flashy

Going to be interesting seeing where they are around the deadline as it always seemed like they would use their league high cap space of 15m to take on some bad contracts for picks/some other players

Couple of small news items.

Gibbs was the NFC's offensive player of the week for Week 18.

NFLPA voted its all pro team. Very limited slots and only a first team. Sewell was the only Lions selected.

That's a bummer about Davis. I was holding out hope. Of all the guys on IR, he and Hutch would make the biggest impact if they came back at full strength (which, by the way, I'm highly skeptical that Hutch can do. Even if he comes back, his role will likely be severely limited).

It's possible CD3 or Hutch come back, but since it's a very long shot for both, I'd say the wisest course would be to level set expectations for everyone that's just not happening. You still have cover because all the medical experts say it's not likely, not even remotely. But put that out before the playoffs start, and now you don't have to address it every day. If instead you say "Boy we sure hope they can come back, that would be great, but just doesn't seem likely", you're still gonna get questions every single media appearance.

That said, Coach is pretty straight about injuries. Cannot think of a single instance where he steered the media or fans wrong. If he say it doesn't look good, then I believe him.
