This kind of stuff & the NYG drafting the Senior Bowl MVP 3 years running give me hope we don’t have the worst GM in the league.

Gotta give BQ & MP credit for going after their guys. Granted they could have went chalk the first round (Oliver/Bush/Wilkins) & EVERY non-Iowa TE was still on the board for their second round. They could have taken Greedy in the second and Tavai would have been there in the 3rd. Or the 4th for that matter. 

But they got the guys they wanted. GLWT, hope it works out. I’m a CPA/CFO in tech, what do I know?

Definitely don’t. I still find the 2nd round pick puzzling but the rest of the draft was good imo. They really recovered today and steered the ship.

Kind of thought we would target an OL, specifically a G. And so much for “Quinn loves SEC guys - the 7th round TE was the only player from the best conference?

IDK, just seemed like a strange draft. I agree the 5th round CB from Penn State was a very good pick, and none of the others look like busts.

But he def zigged when everyone else was zagging. Let’s hope he’s as smart as he thinks he is.

I assume they expect Crosby to play guard. At least I hope. The one common theme was size. Except for the safety, every player was big and long. Even the burner RB we took is 215. Most of our picks were pretty athletic too.

I hope we and all the pundits are wrong but this was the most panned pick I can remember in a long time. It is not the pick but the timing. In the 5th maybe.

For some reason the Patriot way only seems to work for the Patriots. 

Patriots are always drafting late and at times need to reach.

Is this considered big for a LB these days? IDK, seems like every team has at least 2-3 LBs who are >255.

I watched a few different highlight tapes (from the Lions, from the school, and some rando) and came away very unimpressed. He didn't seem like a jarring tackler or guy who was flying all over the field (couple descriptions I read after the pick but before I watched.) He seemed like a guy who clogged the middle on the second level. I saw him slip off a tackle a LOT (& someone else would be there to clean up.) He doesn't seem to have great lateral movement.

TBH I don't consider myself much of a scout. But that was some of the most underwhelming college defensive player's highlight reel(s) I have ever watched.

Hope I'm way off base and the kid is the next Anthony Barr.

Oh I don’t get that pick at all but yes 6’2 250 is big for a LB. Devin Bush was 5’11 234, Devin White is 6’0” 237. Roquan is basically the same. Tavai is 87th percentile for LB height and 71sf for LB weight.

(like a lot of Lions moves, because of previous ties. Paul Pasqualoni was his position coach)

(terrific - we got both of the Monarchs 1K WRs from last year)

(Lions looked at a lot of Clemson defensive players before the draft)

Where did Bush end up? Very few LBs in the NFL are under 6', but he should be a good one.

That Clemson UDFA LB we just signed is 6.37 & 253 (and ran the 40 in 5.0, hence never called)

I guess the Ravens had Ty Johnson on the phone and no picks left when Detroit took him, so they were probably gonna try to make him one of their first UDFA signings. (what's the rules on contacting UDFA guys? draft was still going on)

Also, the backstory on PJ Johnson is incredible. Dude has had quite a journey!

L train disaster recovery started this weekend (we're still trying to fix the tubes from Hurricane Sandy 6-1/2 years ago)

There’s been a lot of negativity on why they took Hock so early and a TE in the 7th and signed Jesse James. They hired a former Seahawk OC. The plan is to run and run a lot. I’m actually surprised they haven’t invest more in a 2nd RB in FA or the draft. There are going to be a lot of 2 TE sets. 

 
we drafted two TEs & signed two UDFA TEs + JJ

3 TE sets with an H-back? Single wing?

maybe Michael Roberts has a plan B to try coaching?

 
Calvin Johnson said he won`t bury the hatchet and come around  the Lions team until they give him back the 1 million portion of his signing bonus when he retired early before his deal was up.

This seems like a no-brainer..as they pay their long snapper more than that.  Get it done.  Pay Calvin 1 million to be the team special assistant to something.

Meh, I don't really care if Johnson is some team ambassador.  He retired early, he lost some signing bonus.  Get over it.

Calvin holds leverage here, considering the team wants to use his popularity as a means to sell tickets/merch/etc.  Sadly, he's still more popular than any other player on the current roster.

I actually thought Barry was more engaging than Calvin, and that's saying something.

 
Not that they are the only team to have these kind of problems, but the lions sure seem to have way more than a 1/32 share of them while having way less than a 1/32 share of playoff wins.

Yeah, I don't really think Calvin is all that beloved in Detroit. Everyone here understands he's one of the most talented receivers of all time, but he doesn't have any signature wins or moments. He doesn't have any personality to speak of. He was a dominant player but not even remotely as entertaining or captivating as Barry. 

Personally, I don't care if he has any involvement with the team. The fact that he's butthurt about a million bucks makes me like him less. I know both the Lions and Calvin have been petty about it, but Calvin not letting it go bugs me.

Id be butt hurt if my employee wanted to take my money when i retired.....i say eff em both ways....lions are not a class org...and calvin? Who gives a rats ###

 
I thought one of the things we liked about Barry and Calvin was that they were class acts, they acted like they had been there before, were humble, etc.

Calvin was humble, played through injuries and deserved more team success. But he always seemed sort of walled off from fans, I never felt like the city embraced him like other stars. Kind of like Grant Hill or Miggy. Not winning a title is certainly a part of that.

I don't dislike Calvin, I just don't like all the comments he's made since retiring. The Lions compensated him well during his time with the team and all he's done is take shots at them. It's easy to take shots at the Lions but it's not always warranted. In this case I don't think it is, just my take on it.

He sacrificed his health for them. He had to retire over it. Not giving him his bonus was cheap imo. I’m fully on his side. He’s always been a class act and a winner. I can not say that for the Lions or their management.

Which has nothing to do with Calvin Johnson's compensation.  Calvin got paid, he got a huge contract.  I loved watching Calvin play but it isn't like he was this great personality and it isn't like the Lions wronged him on contracts or something they made him the highest paid WR in the game.  He's not the first guy to have to give back some signing bonus when retiring early, it was 3 years into an 8 year extension, it's not like he was in his last year or two.

Calvin brought in fans, sold jerseys, etc. I was at a very pointless night game against  the Falcons in week 16. The Lions were 4-10 and got spanked by Atanta. Except Ford Field was packed and rocking the whole night because Calvin caught 11 passes for 225 yards and broke Jerry Rice's single season NFL record. They likely made well over a million dollars that night just from the excitement around Calvin and that record. The Lions did the same thing with Barry. They took him to arbitration for $5 million. I get it and it's legal, but the team has to then deal with the repricussions of that which are the player is likely to put off by it. Why should Calvin have any loyalty or love for the Lions now that he doesn't work for them?

I'm not saying he has to.  I'm just saying that the Lions shouldn't buy that "loyalty" for a million.  It's not really a good look for either side imo.

Fair. My comments were all inregards to the poster who felt like Calvin should be nice to the Lions and not be so negative in the media about them. 

 
Was coming here to bump this thead, good to see it moving.  Not much to say on CJ except he is probably my favorite Lion of all time and it would be great to see him back around.

Other more relevant news:

  • Snacks and Slay missing minicamp, both angling for new deals I guess.  Hope the team can get something worked out, obviously these guys are both critical
  • Lots of smoke around Lions being on Hard Knocks 2019 which would be sosososo awesome to see
  • Jermaine Kearse on board in another sign that our passing game is going to be more vertical (I like this ultimately, I think we will finally be able to run this year and the Linehan offenses were Staffords best years)
  • Good reports out of minicamps on Diggs and Walker, Teez not so much.
I'm feeling somewhat optimistic about 2019 (time for a cold shower I guess)

 
A more vertical passing game can help the running game due to stretch. OL has to hold up without holding to make it work though.

Concerned about resigning Snacks at his age depending on the duration of contract. Both him and Slay need to be on the field however in order for us to think about taking steps forward this year.

One millionaire didn’t fulfill his contract and this other millionaire didn’t want to pay him. Business is business in that respect imo.  Neither needs the money and Calvin comes off poorly for the first time ever. The lions will have more stories once the season starts, but this is what people will remember about Calvin for awhile. No one wins. Let’s be honest, he had a stellar career on one of the worst stretches of football a team has ever seen.  Part of that is because of his rookie contract, as well as stafford and suh, at the tail end of the escalating rookie contract era. The timing of the Millen era couldn’t have been worse in that regard. He’s probably ticked off about that as well. 

Heres a s way for everyone to win- Calvin announces he will donate the money, I’m sure he has a charity (because all millionaires seem to whether they do good with them or not) or he can donate to local charities, the lions give him the money, everyone wins.
