2025 NFL Coaches on the hot seat & Front Office changes (1 Viewer)

Texans promoted DL coach Anthony Weaver to defensive coordinator.

He'll take the reins from Romeo Crennel, whose contract was set to expire. A former defensive end who spent three of his seven NFL seasons in Houston, Weaver has been on Bill O'Brien's staff since 2016. The Texans underachieved on the defensive side in 2019 (fifth-most yards allowed), though Houston wasn't exactly playing with a full deck. Three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt missed much of the season with a torn pec while free-agent signing Bradley Roby was also slowed by injuries.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the Browns are expected to hire ex-Redskins OL coach Bill Callahan.

Callahan will serve the same role in Cleveland. He went 3-8 as the Redskins' interim head coach in 2019, but had previously only coached offensive line since 2015. Baker Mayfield could certainly use a more-consistent unit up front in his effort to bounce back in his third professional season.

ESPN's Cameron Wolfe reports Jim Caldwell will not return to the Dolphins in 2020 but is ready to return to coaching.

Caldwell actually never worked for the Dolphins after being hired by Brian Flores as assistant head coach and QBs. He had to leave the team because of health issues, but Caldwell evidently is ready to get back to work. The 65-year-old has already been linked to the Eagles' OC job, but that was 11 days ago, though Philly has yet to decide on a replacement for since-fired Mike Groh.

Chiefs QB coach Mike Kafka will remain with the team in 2020.

Philadelphia reportedly had interest in interviewing Kafka for their offensive-coordinating vacancy but apparently backed out because they were sure Chiefs coach Andy Reid wouldn't let him go. Given this sudden turn of events, it's possible Kafka's promoted to a higher position (or relaxes as Kansas City's OC-in-waiting) behind OC Eric Bieniemy now that both have officially been brought back. Kafka has been the Chiefs' quarterback coach for both of Patrick Mahomes' campaigns as starter thus far.

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reports the Jaguars are planning to hire ex-Redskins coach Jay Gruden as offensive coordinator.

The deal isn't done quite yet, but it's expected to be finalized shortly after the two parties met today. Gruden was given very little in terms of supporting talent in Washington, yet he was able to have a couple of positive offensive years with Kirk Cousins as his quarterback. Jacksonville presents very similar problems to Washington in regards to offensive talent, but he at least will be spending all of his time on one side of the ball. Gruden's top priorities this offseason will be assessing the quarterback battle, Leonard Fournette's contract, and how to maximize the young receiving group. It's going to take a lot of work to turn this roster into an average NFL offense.

Former Browns coach Freddie Kitchens is expected to be hired by the Giants.

It's unclear what his defined role will be, but it will presumably be as a positional coach under OC Jason Garrett. Kitchens and coach Joe Judge have worked together previously at Mississippi State and Kitchens' experience as an NFL head coach is likely viewed as a big plus for Judge, who is making a big leap into head coaching. Kitchens hasn't been considered for notable jobs since his Cleveland firing, so it's likely that the two parties come to an agreement soon. Judge, Garrett, and Kitchens all being on the same coaching staff is a treat for us all.

ESPN's Rob Demovsky reports Packers DC Mike Pettine will return as the team's defensive coordinator.

Pettine was a holdover from Mike McCarthy's tenure and improved Green Bay's defensive unit in numerous categories following the offseason additions of free-agent pass rushers Za'Darius Smith and Preston Smith. Even so, the team finished No. 18 in yards allowed, getting embarrassed in the NFC Championship behind a whopping 285 rushing yards and 37 points permitted. Given the cap space and abundance of draft picks the organization concertedly sunk into that side of the ball at this time last year, 2020 is likely Pettine's last shot at redemption under coach Matt LaFleur.

Can't believe no one is hiring Phillips. I think the only job still open is the Vikings, and hard to imagine Zimmer bringing in another big name like that.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Vikings assistant head coach/offensive advisor Gary Kubiak is taking over as the offensive coordinator.

Kubiak replaces new-Browns coach Kevin Stefanski. Still, the long-time run-game guru had a large impact on the Vikings' ability to largely control games on the ground as well as Kirk Cousins' frequent play-action success. Expect a similar approach in 2020: Feed Dalvin Cook all he can handle while featuring Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs in the passing game.

Giants expected to hire ex-Cowboys OL coach Marc Colombo for the same role.

Colombo is, of course, very familiar with Giants OC Jason Garrett. His primary task will be limiting the amount of rushers that make it to Daniel Jones, who fumbled an ungodly 18 times in just 13 games last season.

i don't know, the Rams weren't all that great on defense in his 3 years, despite seemingly very good personnel.

i wouldn't be surprised if he gets another chance, but he might be done.

Yeah, I don't get what the deal is with him. Same pattern everywhere he goes: He comes in and the defense makes an immediate leap in the first year. Then they regress a little, and within another 2-3 years he's out. Maybe there's something about his schtick that wears thin?

I know next to nothing about how NFL teams hire their coordinators, but when teams are replacing guys like Phillips with guys like Joe Barry it suggests to me that there are factors at play beyond statistical performance.

According to ESPN's Jake Trotter, former Giants coach Ben McAdoo was seen at the Browns' facility on Friday.

The nature of his visit is unknown, though it's possible McAdoo is interviewing for a position on coach Kevin Stefanski's staff. The Browns have an OC vacancy, although it's been speculated Stefanski could serve as his own offensive coordinator. McAdoo hasn't coached since his midseason firing in 2017, but has landed a few interviews during that time including recent sit-downs with Carolina and Jacksonville. The 42-year-old is obviously very familiar with Odell Beckham, who had some of his best seasons under McAdoo in New York.

Broncos hired ex-Giants OC Mike Shula as QB coach.

It's a step back after Shula held a coordinator role under Pat Shurmur the last two years. He'll continue to follow Shurmur, who replaced ex-Broncos OC Rich Scangarello. This is a good get for Denver — Shula has a strong offensive background and played a role in developing Daniel Jones this past season. Shula will try to parlay Drew Lock's rookie success into a second-year leap.

Patriots hired ex-Rams assistant OC Jedd Fisch.

Fisch’s position has yet to be announced. He's spent the last two years in Los Angeles and was USC's offensive coordinator in 2017. Adding Fisch gives the Patriots another experienced offensive-mind on their coaching staff.

Cowboys hired former Packers Director of Player Development Rob Davis as assistant head coach.

In Dallas, the former Packers long-snapper will be reunited with Mike McCarthy, who coached him in Green Bay for two seasons. Davis spent a decade in the Packers' front office before accepting a job outside of football as the Senior Director of People and Culture and later Senior Director of Operational Excellence for Pierce Manufacturing in Wisconsin. It's not the first time McCarthy has gone to the Packers well as new LBs coach Scott McCurley also has ties to Green Bay.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Texans will retain ex-DC Romeo Crennel in a "key role on defense."

Whatever that means. Crennel was not retained as defensive coordinator, with DL coach Anthony Weaver promoted to take his place. Crennel has been with the Texans since coach/GM/everything Bill O'Brien arrived in 2014. Five months shy of his 73rd birthday, Crennel served as "assistant head coach" in 2017 before once again taking the Texans' defensive reins following Mike Vrabel's departure for the Titans.

The Texans have formally named coach Bill O'Brien as their general manager.

The team has also promoted executive vice president of team development Jack Easterby to executive vice president of football operations. Easterby, a former Patriots team chaplain and life coach/character coach, has seen his influence steadily increase since arriving in Houston last April. Long prone to power struggles with his general managers, O'Brien has quickly consolidated power since founder/owner Bob McNair's death in Nov. 2018. An active trader of both players and draft picks, O'Brien's tenure at the head of the front office has had a "mortgaging the future" feel thus far.

Texans promoted executive VP of team development Jack Easterby to executive VP of football operations.

Easterby has only been with the Texans since April 2019 but has already established himself as the No. 2 man in the front office. It's been quite the ascent for the Patriots' former team chaplain and life coach/character coach (lol), one that included allegations of tampering with Pats director of player personnel Nick Caserio mere months into his tenure. Easterby's primary function appears to be serving as coach/GM Bill O'Brien's No. 1 yes man.

Browns mutually parted ways with VP of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith.

They also fired director of college scouting Steve Malin. Assistant GM Eliot Wolf's future has yet to be determined, but it won't be surprising if he's also let go. The Browns are clearing house under new GM Andrew Berry.

The Browns and assistant GM Eliot Wolf agreed to mutually part ways.

Wolf has been considered one of the most promising GM candidates, but he wasn't going to get an opportunity in Cleveland after GM Andrew Berry signed a long-term deal this month. Wolf will likely serve as a righthand man to another NFL GM this season before going through the GM interview process once again.

Browns hired 49ers passing-game coordinator/DBs coach Joe Woods as defensive coordinator.

The hiring will be official soon. Woods was always the favorite to succeed Steve Wilks as Cleveland's D coordinator but obviously he had a busy January and early February with San Francisco advancing all the way to Super Bowl LIV in Miami. The 49-year-old has mostly served as a position coach in the NFL, though he did coordinate the Broncos' defense for two years under Vance Joseph. Though they underachieved this past season, the Browns boast a talented defense led by elite pass-rusher Myles Garrett and Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward.

Colts announced ex-Eagles OC Mike Groh as WRs coach.

Kevin Patullo, the team's previous WRs coach, will stay on staff with a new title. Reich first worked with Groh as Philadelphia's wide receivers coach in 2016 then hand in hand during the team's Championship run the following year. He was promoted to OC once Reich left to take on Indy's head-coaching vacancy. Expect Groh to work closely with Reich for play-calling purposes this upcoming season.

Jaguars hired ex-49ers GM Trent Baalke as director of player personnel.

The 49ers' general manager from 2011-16, Baalke had not been in a front office since he was fired in San Francisco. He spent some time working for the league. Director of player personnel is one of the highest rungs of the front office ladder, and will give the Jags an experienced in-house alternative to hot-seat boss Dave Caldwell. Caldwell lacked an obvious threat after the Jags fired Tom Coughlin. Baalke got off to the hottest of starts in San Francisco before quickly going downhill.

New Browns WRs coach Chad O'Shea will also serve as passing-game coordinator.

"Chad just spent a year calling it, so he understands the things that go along with play-calling and learned a ton of lessons he can help me with," coach Kevin Stefanski said. The two worked alongside each in Minnesota from 2006-08. Stefanski, of course, is fresh off overseeing the Vikings' run-obsessed offense, so it makes sense to give himself an extra hand in the passing game.

Eagles added passing game coordinator to QBs coach Press Taylor's job title.

Taylor was interviewing for the Eagles' offensive coordinator vacancy, but it doesn't look like he'll get the job. Instead, he'll walk away with a small step up the coaching ladder. Considered to be on of the brighter young minds in the NFL, it won't be a surprise to see Taylor interview for other OC openings over the next couple of seasons.

Giants retain Thomas McGaughey as the special teams coordinator.

McGaughey has been the special teams coordinator since 2018 after holding the same title with the Jets, 49ers, and Panthers over the previous four seasons. The Giants hired Joe Judge, the Patriots special teams coordinator, to be their head coach, so they figure to be working hand in hand to get this unit right.

NFL Media's Tom Pelissero reports former Broncos OC Rich Scangarello is expected to join the Eagles' offensive staff.

The Eagles have an offensive coordinator opening, but it's unclear what job he's expected to take. In Denver, Scangarello showed some promise with below-average weapons but also got off script too easily in his first stint as an offensive coordinator, particularly with his situational play calling. Surrounding himself with other offensive minds would be a great way for him to fine-tune his craft.

Steelers signed GM Kevin Colbert to a one-year contract extension.

Colbert's current contract was set to expire after the NFL Draft. "Kevin continues to play a key role in our success and his dedication to our personnel efforts is unparalleled," said Steelers President Art Rooney II. "We are pleased he will lead those efforts for at least one more year." Colbert initially joined the Steelers in February 2000 as their director of football operations and is set to enter his 21st season with the organization, including his 10th as the team's general manager. This new deal takes his services through the 2021 NFL draft.

The Titans will go without an official defensive coordinator for the 2020 season.

The Titans have also added former Saints coach and Redskins DC Jim Haslett to their staff as ILBs coach. It's possible Haslett ends up as coach Mike Vrabel's top defensive lieutenant, but there have been whispers it will be OLBs coach Shane Bowen. Vrabel had said he did not want to make an outside hire to replace Dean Pees. Obviously, Vrabel appears set to call his own defense.

Eagles hired ex-Broncos OC Rich Scangarello as senior offensive assistant.

Doug Pederson is going without an offensive coordinator for 2020, but Scangarello could be the next best thing. An ex-Kyle Shanahan assistant, Scangarello has just one year of play-calling experience at the NFL leve, but his firing from the Broncos did not seem particularly well deserved.

Jaguars hired ex-Giants coach Ben McAdoo as QBs coach.

McAdoo had been out of the coaching ranks since being fired by the Giants in Dec. 2017. He also interviewed for the Panthers' QBs coach opening. McAdoo made his coaching name as Aaron Rodgers' QBs coach in 2012-13, though it is obviously difficult to discern how much, if any, credit he deserves for Rodgers' era-defining play. McAdoo has somewhat of a mess on his hands in Jacksonville with overpaid veteran Nick Foles and streaky sixth-rounder Gardner Minshew.

9News' Mike Klis reports that there is "mutual interest" between Colorado and Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy regarding CU's open head-coaching position.

Bieniemy is still basking in the glow of his team's Super Bowl win over the 49ers, but he could be heading back to his alma mater in due time if the mutual interest here gains tangible traction. Bieniemy has been with the Chiefs since 2013, first as running backs coach and then (these past two seasons) as offensive coordinator. If he does ultimately end up with Colorado, it would mark his third stint with the Buffs, having previously served as the program's RB coach from 2001-02 and OC from 2011-12.

Browns hired ex-Colts GM Ryan Grigson to serve in an advisory and consulting role.

After being fired by the Colts after the 2016 season, Grigson was a senior personnel executive for the Browns and a consultant for the Seahawks for one season a pop. His familiarity with the current Browns front office from his one-year stint with the team in 2017 was enough for him to land this "advisory" role. A title like this likely means NFL teams don't view him as a serious GM candidate at the moment. He wasn't on a front office roster last season.

Updating a previous report, Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn's contract extension puts him through the 2021 season.

The extension just added one season to his current contract, but it at least gets him into the new stadium for two seasons. This upcoming year will be a difficult one to manage with Phillip Rivers out of town and with the business side of things up in the air. Despite having strong rosters on paper, Lynn has a 26-22 record in three seasons with the team. Another sub-7 win season will put Lynn on the hot seat.

Great opportunity as OC both financially makes around $450,000 annually and college HCs make millions and since he's missed out on NFL HCing jobs the CU job would be a proving ground.

Mel Tucker was awesome and his loss leaves a huge hole.

Come on Eric, take the Colorado job and make the Buffs great again.🙏

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Colorado has reached out to Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy about its head coaching vacancy.

"Nothing imminent," Schefter's source said. "EB is doing his due diligence." Bieniemy, perhaps the leading candidate for the job, makes all kinds of sense. He was a star running back at the school from 1987-1990 who remains Colorado's all-time leading rusher. He's had two separate assistant coaching stints at the school. Bieniemy was named RB coach of the Chiefs in 2013, and was promoted to OC in 2018. Surprisingly passed over for a head coaching job of any kind this cycle, kismet may have kept him available with Mel Tucker's shocking departure for Michigan State forthcoming, opening up the head job at Bieniemy's alma matter very very late in the coaching carousel.

According to Josh Kendall of The Athletic, Eagles RBs coach Duce Staley "inquired" about the same position on South Carolina's staff.

Staley was reportedly "rebuffed" after reaching out to coach Will Muschamp in hopes of returning to his alma mater. The 44-year-old has understandably grown impatient with the Eagles, who chose not to promote Staley or even interview him for the team's vacant offensive coordinator position this offseason. Seeing no future in Philadelphia, the former running back would likely jump at the opportunity to coach elsewhere.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy is unlikely to take the University of Colorado's head-coaching job.

Per Fowler, "there is no major traction" between the sides. Fowler implies that Bieniemy expects 2021 to finally be the year he lands a head-coaching gig at the NFL level. With Bieniemy now having a Super Bowl ring and another year of Patrick Mahomes upcoming, it's a reasonable belief on the offensive coordinator's part.

Eric is due and if the report is correct his opportunity is coming by next year.

I was familiar with Mel Tucker from  his time with the Browns.  He did a fantastic job in Boulder but seemed to use the Buffs job as a stepping stone.  He took his OC and O-line coaches with him.

The CU Athletic director named former Cleveland  Brown WR Darrin Chiaverini interim HC but the latest rumor is that NY Giant OLB coach Bret Bielema who missed out on the MSU job to Mel Tucker is the current front runner.  Bielma was the HC at Wisconsin and at Arkansas before taking a job with Belichick in NE as a defensive consultant prior to landing the Giants coaching position.

Multiple outlets are reporting that Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy has pulled his name out of the Colorado head coaching search.

Mike Klis of NBC 9NEWS Denver and ESPN's Adam Schefter are both reporting that Bieniemy told his alma mater that he was withdrawing his name from consideration. Bieniemy never officially interviewed for the position, but he and the school had been in contact about the opening. Bieniemy joins Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian in spurning the Buffaloes this week. At least publicly, that would seem to leave the two front-runners as Air Force’s Troy Calhoun and former Arkansas and Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema, with WR coach and interim HC Darrin Chiaverini in the mix as well.

Texans coach/GM Bill O'Brien won't call plays in 2020.

"Timmy will call the plays," BOB said of recently-promoted TEs coach Tim Kelly. Kelly was named offensive coordinator earlier this month. Despite Kelly's unproven nature as a play-caller, it's a positive development for Deshaun Watson and company. BOB had proven replacement level, at best, settling into stale patterns and struggling to scheme players open. It's a rare relinquishing of power from a consummate consolidater.

Eagles hired Marty Mornhinweg as senior offensive consultant.

The longtime assistant and 2001-02 Lions head coach was most recently offensive coordinator of the Ravens, though he (unofficially) lost those duties to Greg Roman midway through the 2018 season. He officially lost them after the season, spending 2019 out of the league. Mornhinweg spent nearly a decade in Philadelphia under Andy Reid, coaching alongside Doug Pederson from 2009-12. With Pederson lacking an official offensive coordinator, Mornhinweg will be one of his primary sounding boards.
