2025 NFL Coaches on the hot seat & Front Office changes (1 Viewer)

@jjones9
One day after his in-person interview, the Bears have hired Eric Washington as their next defensive coordinator, source says.

The Browns have interviewed Andy Dickerson, Ken Dorsey, Jerrod Johnson, Brian Johnson and Kellen Moore (today) for their vacant OC position. With so many openings around the league, it would make sense for Cleveland to move quickly on a hire this deep into the process.

I haven't heard an update on Matthew Slater coaching. He was close to doing so last year, decided to play one more year, retired and now...where is it?
@Boston
Does Mayo "have to" hire Slater in some capacity? Are Pats fans expectant of this?

99% certain Slater is retiring...they treated the last game as such...the players all wore some gear honoring him...that being said I'm not sure why it hasn't become official...maybe with all that is going on with the BB to Mayo transition they want to let that settle down first so it doesn't get overshadowed...Slater is held in the highest regard by everyone whether it is teammates, the organization, the media or the fans...I have never heard anything other than he is the real deal...there has been some chatter about his post-career but nothing official...there is no doubt he has a position within the organization waiting for him if he wants it...whether that is as a coach, the front office or just doing the PR thing it will be there for him.

The NFL is really amazing...they just keep figuring out how to get more popular...I say this because it feels like the attention to filling out coaching staffs has gone to another level this year...I have never seen it this intense and it feels like everyone now knows who all the up-and-coming Assistants are...that used to be just for the hardcore geeks...it truly is a 12 month a year sport now.
It doesn't hurt that you have a huge story in Belichick leaving the Patriots and another in Harbaugh leaving Michigan.

@RapSheet

The Patriots plan to interview Lions pass game coordinator Tanner Engstrand for their OC position, source said. Engstrand’s name has become a popular one around the NFL thanks to Detroit’s offensive success.

Engstrand also worked with Jim Harbaugh earlier in his career.

Tanner moved from TEs to Passing Game Coordinator this season. It has been widely speculated he would take over as OC in Detroit if Ben Johnson’s goes to the Commanders.

There's lots of smoke around Christian Parker as Green Bay's new DC. The guy is 32 years old. Currently Denver DB coach but has ties to the Packers from 4 or so years ago under Mike Pettine.

Another big assistant move in Philadelphia: Eagles are hiring former Chargers and Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore as their offensive coordinator, per sources.

Eagles coordinators now will be Moore and Vic Fangio.

Zac Robinson indeed seems to be joining Raheem as Falcons OC:

Still obviously need to address the QB, but have to think it’s a good hire for the skill position guys.
I was so wrong on him as a player. He was an intelligent QB that knew to patiently work the short game until chucking it deep. I think it was a year after Bradford or same year, every scout seemed to comment on his IQ. I thought the Pats were the perfect team for him and... he pretty much fizzled.
Every time he's mentioned as a coach I'm...yep those who can't do, teach, and he sure has the head for it.
I've noticed players single him out over the years and ...I'm happy for him. It's sure been a different road than expected

Nice article which updates where the Pats are with their staff...it appears Caley is the favorite for the OC job...he was a contender when they hired BOB...better off he didn't get it because it allowed him to get a year in with McVay in LA and avioid last season's disaster where it didn't matter who the OC was...by all accounts the Pats are going away from their old style of offense and will be going with a form of the McVay-style...great news as that other offense worked for TB12 but was not well-suited for others.

As an aside...IMO the best sites to get Patriot info is nbcsportsboston with Curran and Perry and Boston Sports Journal with Bedard and Giardi...BSJ is a pay-site and definitely gets more into dissecting X's and O's.

We mentioned the
@Panthers
plan to pair new GM Dan Morgan with
@chiefs
VP of football ops Brandt Tilis last Monday and Tuesday. Tilis' office in KC has already been cleaned out, and he hasn't been on the team's playoff trips to Buffalo or Baltimore.

(So, yes, that one's done.)

Cleveland has a new coordinator: Browns are hiring former Bills’ offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey as their offensive coordinator, per sources

Saw that the Bills removed the interim tag for Joe Brady and made him the full time OC.

Probably good for continuing to prop up Josh Allen's fantasy value (if that's possible) as Brady seemed to go back to having Josh run the ball more than Dorsey did.

Commanders will have five interviews by end of Tuesday per Keim and Schefter

Ben Johnson seems like the front runner
Yeah he does.
I hope he gets it.
I've enjoyed the Magic Johnson conversations already. If Ben gets it, the Golden State guy will bring more of that discussion since he will have hired the top young head coach candidate and top GM candidate.

Putting the work in, commitment, dedication, competitive spirit, sports intelligence...it doesn't matter which sport- the best guy will smell what's what. It doesn't always need to get into the finer points of the game.

I hope Serena starts sitting in on interviews with the Fins now.

When Mularkey transformed the Titans from second worst, he talked about wanting football guys first.
When I was little, my dad used to get upset Parcells used to use the phrase gym rats and if the GM is unsure, then get him some gym rats later in the draft. On the surface that's extremely flawed BUT amidst a list of the top 2-300, a gym rats would have some value. Ya know they're going to be committed and with the occasional divas....ok ok I'm rambling, I'm totally looking forward to the overanalyzation of the NBA guys in Washington.

TJ Yates will be the QB coach for Atlanta
He was their WR coach and "passing game specialist" so new coach Raheem Morris must like his work.
(Zac Robinson is OC)

Pitre RB coach was retained by Atlanta- he did a great job... whether anyone in FF gives him credit.
Dwayne Ledford OL coach also retained- interesting surprise because they were to have a top OL and they were not at all.

Randel El name makes me feel old-

#Bucs announced they conducted a virtual interview with Lions WRs coach Antwaan Randle El Friday and an in person interview Monday with former Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt for their vacant OC job.

@AdamSchefter

Commanders’ officials are in Detroit today to meet with Lions’ offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Lions’ defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn about their head coaching job.

This is a little different but felt this was the right place to post it...Phil Perry does an excellent job with his coverage of the Pats and NFL...it is kind of about the Pats search for an OC but it breaks down the McVay and Shanny systems which are all the rage:

Arthur was a top OC of a top offense a few years ago, people thought higher of Tannehill than any other time in his career, and Henry ran for 2k. To just be like "I didn't like him in Atlanta" is a myopic point of view.

No name social media guys were claiming Munchak and Smith to Pittsburgh as a rumor yesterday. One of those happened.

Corey Davis AJB versus Diontae and Pickens comparisons will be tweeted in 5,4,3....

The Steelers, today, don't have the line or the back to do what I'd expect.
Henry to Steelers rumors?

#Lions OC Ben Johnson informed the #Seahawks and #Commanders that he’s staying in Detroit, per sources. Johnson is still only 37 and will be a hot head coaching candidate again next year. But first, he wants to take another shot at bringing a Lombardi Trophy to Detroit.
It's not a given. Surely he knows that but if Detroit has a bad year, he might not be the hot candidate anymore.

I'm gonna assume good things about the culture and team drove him to want to stay in that brothehood

Wonder if a door got opened for Vrabel? I still think no because I think both Washington and Seattle don't want to give him the power/authority he wants, which of course makes BB a non-starter.

Titans Pat OHara's contract isn't renewed.
He's a very popular likeable dude with a weirdly diverse background. He's coached or played in every league. He coached actors playing football characters and is known for the Waterboy. Mahomes has spoken about working with him many years ago. Brady told a story about when he was at USC and apparently OHara ripped his game apart then helped him.
He's a unique perspective guy that probably lands somewhere to advise a younger coach.

OHara is like 55 but somehow viewed as an old guy despite the coaching profession average age

It was probably that, but there were some reports that his asking price was too high. I also wonder if he wasn't so excited about the opportunities available (although I've long thought the Washington job was one of the best scenarios around this season).

Who's still in the running for Washington? Are there any offensive options? Seems like it's all former DCs. A guy like Quinn would make me very nervous; we saw in Atlanta that he made a Super Bowl with Shanahan, but the offense instantly regressed the moment he left. Most important thing for the next regime in DC is to develop the No. 2 pick into a franchise QB

Reportedly he was asking $15m/yr.

Every assistant coach wants HC abilities. Seattle has a desirable franchise (maybe), Washington had the 2nd pick in the draft. Perhaps Johnson asked too much or perhaps he didn't interview all that well. I'm inclined to think when neither team hires you, a statement like this makes everyone look good.

It's funny how a team will spend 50 mil on a 21 year old that hasn't played a snap but 15 mil for a leader of their team is too much

I'm sure it's not "either or" and he had a lot of thoughts.
I love Pete Carroll but maybe some new guy doesn't want the former coach around.
Washington seems to have fixed things and seem like they're putting good leaders in place. If someone was apprehensive because they were a mess recently, I could see that.

A lot of people thought Carolina was quite undesirable due to ownership.

Then there's these new GMs- Hey you got hired Friday but interview the guy that'll be your coach on Monday- that's pretty odd for a no experience guy
