2025 NFL Coaches on the hot seat & Front Office changes (1 Viewer)

Bills DC Leslie Frazier has been promoted to assistant head coach.

Frazier will keep his duties as defensive coordinator, but he'll have a bigger overall role within the organization. From ownership to general manager to head coach, the Bills are building a stable team, and recognizing top assistants continues to build that chemistry. Frazier has interviewed for head-coaching gigs in recent years and may get more chances this offseason if the Bills can repeat their defensive success from 2019.

Which NFL Head Coach Will Be Fired First In 2020?

The 2020 NFL season is only a week old, but there’s already speculation regarding which team will get rid of its head coach.

Two names stand above the rest as the favorites to be out of a job first. New York Jets head coach Adam Gase leads the way with +325 betting odds, according to Bovada. Matt Patricia of the Detroit Lions isn’t far behind with +350 odds to be the first coach fired this year.

Gase led the Jets to a 7-9 record in 2019 when he first took over the team. Following a 27-17 loss in Week 1 to the Buffalo Bills, New York is expected to be among the league’s worst teams.

Detroit had maybe the most embarrassing loss off Week 1, blowing a 23-6 fourth-quarter lead to the Chicago Bears. Patricia is 9-23-1 since taking the Lions’ job for the 2018 season. Jim Caldwell went 36-28 as Detroit's coach from 2014-2017.

Odds to be the 1st NFL Head Coach to be fired/resign (Bovada):

Gase +325

Patricia +350

Quinn +600

Marrone +750

O'Brien +1000

Lynn/Nagy +2500

Taylor +3000

Arians/Fangio/Flores/Zimmer +3300

Judge/Kingsbury +4000

— Odds Shark (@OddsShark) September 15, 2020

Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn and Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Marrone are possibilities with +600 and +750 odds, respectively. It was speculated that both coaches could be fired at the end of last season when their teams finished with losing records.

The Falcons salvaged Quinn’s job by winning six of their final eight games in 2020. Atlanta lost at home to the Seattle Seahawks 38-25 in Week 1.

Jacksonville pulled off the biggest upset of Week 1 by defeating the Indianapolis Colts 27-20. The Jaguars have finished in last place in the AFC South in two straight years and are thought by some to be tanking for the top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien has +1000 odds to be the first coach fired. Houston has won the AFC South in four of the last five years, but the team hasn’t made it beyond the divisional round of the playoffs. The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs beat Houston 34-20 to kick off the season.

Los Angeles Chargers coach Anthony Lynn and Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy are long shots with +2500 odds each.

Jay Gruden became the first coach fired last year when Washington relieved him of his duties after an 0-5 start.

Gase has to have compromising photos of a member of the Johnson family, right?

Adam Gase Warns Jets Fans Not To Overreact To First 60 Years Of Franchise

"FLORHAM PARK, NJ—Asking for patience so the team has time to develop and cohere, New York Jets head coach Adam Gase warned Sunday that fans should not overreact too much to the first 60 years of the franchise. “I know that we got to a slow start in the first six decades, but it takes time to build a winning culture,” said Gase, who claimed that despite the desire of fans to see the team win right now, it could take up to 150 years to turn around the Jets franchise. “You can’t judge this team and give all these hot takes based on one little century, that’s not how football works. I know these armchair quarterbacks are gonna attack me if we look bad this next decade, but that is just short-term thinking, and I’m in this for the long haul. We got some promising young guys on this team and I guarantee they will still be alive to see us lift the trophy by the 2080s.” At press time, Gase was retooling his entire offensive scheme for the third time in four weeks."

Yes he's a 'brilliant offensive mind' when he has Peyton Manning. We all know Peyton was a bum on the street before Gase reached down from the offensive coordinator booth heavens and bestowed a laser rocket arm upon him.

But somehow his brilliance disappeared when he tried the same magic with Darnold, Tannehill, and Cutler.

Falcons’ Dan Quinn, Lions’ Matt Patricia, Jets’ Adam Gase racing to be 1st NFL head coach fired | Hot seat updates

Through the NFL’s early games on Sunday, 10 head coaches had records of 0-2, meaning seats are getting hot across the league.

Who will be the first head coach fired in 2020? And how soon will it happen? Here are the latest temperature readings:

Matt Rhule, Carolina Panthers: The former Baylor and Temple head coach is two games into his NFL career. He’s not going anywhere.

Temperature: Cold

Dan Quinn, Atlanta Falcons: After blowing a 20-0 lead over the Dallas Cowboys, the N.J. native needs to update his resume.

Temperature: Boiling

Mike Zimmer, Minnesota Vikings: An ugly 28-11 loss to the Indianapolis Colts is reason for concern.

Temperature: Warm

Matt Patricia, Detroit Lions: The former Bill Belichickdisciple will be out of a job sooner rather than later after a 42-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Temperature: Boiling

Doug Pederson, Philadelphia Eagles: After winning the team’s only Super Bowl title in franchise history, Pederson is safe for quite some time.

Temperature: Cold

Joe Judge, New York Giants: Another Belichick disciple struggling on his own. But the rookie head coach isn’t going anywhere.

Temperature: Cold

Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals: Armed with No. 1 overall draft pick Joe Burrow, Taylor isn’t in danger.

Temperature: Cold

Vic Fangio, Denver Broncos: Injuries to linebacker Von Miller and quarterback Drew Lock will buy Fangio some time.

Temperature: Lukewarm

Adam Gase, New York Jets: The team continues to regress, and that’s bad news for Gase.

Temperature: Boiling

Brian Flores, Miami Dolphins: Yes, a third Belichick protege still looking for his first win in 2020. But Flores will be given time to develop first-round draft pick Tua Tagovailoa.

Temperature: Cold

Bonus ...

Bill O’Brien, Texans: If he loses Sunday to the Baltimore Ravens, O’brien, the former Belichick sidekick, will be on thin ice in Houston.

Temperature: Rising

They haven’t won a game since October of 2019, they haven’t won an away game since September 2019, and perhaps the worst one, they haven’t won a divisional game since December 2018. If you’re the Ford family, what more do you need to see to make your decision?

Mike Zimmer, Minnesota Vikings: An ugly 28-11 loss to the Indianapolis Colts is reason for concern.

Temperature: Warm
Nope - Zim & Spielman just inked 5 year deals - ink is hardly dry on those contracts. They ain't going anywhere & I think they might be tanking the season to get #1 overall pick next year (Trevor Lawrence) - Lots of turnover on that defense

FMIA Week 2: Let Russ Cook? Wilson Has Ingredients For First MVP Season

Excerpt:

It’s Sept. 21, and Matt Patricia looks done already. The Lions have lost 11 in a row, and they’re the worst finishers since 2019 Edwin Diaz. In Week 1, they blew a 17-point fourth-quarter lead and lost to the Mitchell Trubisky Bears. In Week 2, they blew an early 14-3 lead in Green Bay and lost by 21. Predictably, all the Lions stuck by their coach in the aftermath, but what are they going to say? The most troublesome thing about the Lions is that Patricia was considered a brilliant defensive mind and tactician in New England, and he just can’t get the defense right in Detroit.

The next two weeks likely won’t help. Detroit is at the 2-0 Cardinals, with the 1-0 Saints (playing tonight) coming to Detroit in Week 4. Then Detroit has its bye. There’s no way the franchise would fire him at 0-4 this year and 9-26-1 in his tenure, is there? Doubtful, but clearly, Patricia doesn’t have a lot of time to save his job, not when the Cleveland Browns have five more wins than Patricia since opening day 2018.

I can tell you guys as a Philly native nobody here is clamoring to kick Peterson to the curb.  We all want to know what's wrong with Wentz. That one superbowl bought him a lot of good will.  Hell, if nick foles ever wanted to sleep with a Philadelphian's wife most of them would let him.

I seriously doubt that Patricia will be the first one fired, because the Fords generally don't do that.  Should've been fired last year, but they gave him an ultimatum to be competitive to make the playoffs this year.  As bad as they are, and as much as he deserves to be fired, I can't see him getting fired until they've been eliminated from playoff contention, and even then it will probably be after the season ends.

I certainly hope he gets canned, because the team is clearly not headed in the right direction.

Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals: Armed with No. 1 overall draft pick Joe Burrow, Taylor isn’t in danger.

Temperature: Cold-Malarky, if he goes 2-14 again it should spell the end. Plenty of great coaches out there you can have come in and work with Burrow and develop him.
The shortest tenure in the Mike Brown era is **** LeBeau's 45 games.  He even gave David Shula 71 games.  The Brown family don't roll the way the Browns football team doesn't changing the head coach every other week.

No chance.

It's 2020, you cannot survive going 1-15 and then 2-14 the next year, no way.

But lots of merit as to why you would say that and you are correct about the owners.

Taylor would have to overwhelming lose the locker room.  And even then it might matter.  But early to pull the fire alarm as they lost 2 games by a total of 8 points.  There are aspects of the team that look awful but they are competitive in the games.  The bye is midseason.  The guy that needs most firing is the trash OL coach anyway.

But isn't the OL Coach a reflection of the Head Coach? I see nothing in the games that leads me to believe he is competent and has earned his right to head coach.

Maybe Burrow will win 5 or 6 games, that would be a massive improvement.

Biggest flaw in Taylor is hiring that guy.  And I am not saying Taylor is gonna figure it out.  What I am saying is that Mike Brown doesn't rush to fire coaches, especially head coaches.

As a philly native as well curious if your take has changed.

Haha. Man....Quinn & Gase. They gots to go!

Matt Patricia gets a reprieve for a week after beating a decent Cardinals team.

I just realized the Cowboys coaching staff (in no danger of being fired this year.) Is basically the same as the 2005 Niners in reverse. McCarthy (HC/OC) & Nolan (DC/HC)

The Athletic's Connor Hughes reports Jets coach Adam Gase will not be fired following Thursday's loss to the Broncos.

Gase's squad has a -66 point differential and five offensive touchdowns in four games, but he will live to see another day despite providing zero reason for optimism on any front. Gase has not produced a drop of lemonade out of his lemons on offense, and the Jets' defense is undisciplined, penalty-obsessed disaster. This is truly rock bottom, but Gang Green's clueless ownership is probably correct in its passivity that firing Gase now won't really accomplish anything. It would still be surprising if Gase makes it all 16 games.

While I agree with his assessment of the team, I’ll disagree that firing him would do nothing.

I would say that the most brilliant thing Gase has done is put together a staff so bad that no viable interim options exist.

But more I thought about he does not even get credit for that and it's only another thing to make Jets fan feel  hopeless because  I remembered the reason given for Matt Rhule not wanting the job was that the Jets wanted to dictate his staff to him.
