2025 Team Defense & Defense by Committee Thread (13 Viewers)

Lost Travis Hunter and according to my roster makeup he’s droppable and grabbing a defense for next week.

Looking at Cleveland as they have a nice little every other week schedule Jets in 10, LV in 12, and Ten in 14.

If I can find a nice week 11 and 13 team I might be able to pair them if no other offensive players rear their head.

Cleveland playoff schedule isn’t great. But it’s about time to start looking. I was eyeballing Tampa Bay earlier as their playoff schedule is fairly nice.
 
Protip for Yahoo users: You can drop someone on your bench anytime before tomorrow night and pick up either Cleveland or the Jets, since both are on bye and face each other next week. I'm thinking I'll drop Chuba for Cleveland.

While I would prefer a defense facing Cleveland to one facing the Jets, I generally prioritize defensive quality over matchup, and the Browns are clearly the superior D
 
I hate carrying two defenses, but jumped on TB (currently #4 in scoring for our league) since their week 15-18 schedule (ATL, CAR, MIA, CAR) is pretty favorable. My other defense is IND (#8 in scoring). They have been my defense all along and just added Gardner. They have a BYE in week 11 so I may ride it out and see how much better they are now. Their week 15-18 schedule is SEA, SF, JAC, HOU)...not as favorable as TB's defense.

May see if I can acquire TB for the playoffs. Non playoff team has them.
 
Getting conflicting opinions this week on BAL @ Minny now that they're healthy, facing JJ McCarthy, or Jags @ Houston who will be starting Davis Mills.

In this league DEF is scored based on over/under ~21 points, over/under ~325 yards against, and 3 points per turnover.

I bet everyone thought that last week @ Detroit. I hate chasing points, but I'm leaning towards starting them.
 
Baltimore is on waivers in a league of mine. Worth dropping TB for them? TB 13-17 is money. Baltimore 10-15 is money lol. I also have NE where 11-13 is nice. Then a bye. Then usable again in week 17.

Jags at Hou - no Stroud, no kicker, missing 2 starting OL.
Bills at Mia
Bears Vs NYG
Pats at TB

If you missed on Carolina no real clear choices.

Jets face leadership void with loss of Williams, Gardner

2. D-molished: Everybody knows change is inevitable in the NFL, but the turnover on defense is stunning even by the here-today, gone-tomorrow reality of the league.

Two years ago, the Jets were No. 3 in defensive EPA. Wrap your brain around this: Nine of the 12 snap leaders from that unit are gone, and it's not a stretch to project that it'll be down to one by the time the Jets report to training camp next summer -- Jermaine Johnson. The other holdovers are Quincy Williams and Tony Adams, both of whom have been benched this season and are headed to free agency. Adams is expected to return to the lineup, replacing the injured Andre Cisco at safety.

Who knows? Maybe Johnson also will be gone next year. After all, the Jets listened to offers for him right up until the trade deadline.

How does one dismantle a defense? Let us count the ways.

Four of the top 12 were traded: Gardner, Quinnen Williams, Michael Carter II and John Franklin-Myers.

Four left via free agency: D.J. Reed, Bryce Huff, Jordan Whitehead and Solomon Thomas.

One was released: C.J. Mosley, who wound up retiring in an injury-related decision. The defense started to lose its bite last season, as the takeaway total dropped to 17 from 31 in 2023. This season's unit has only one takeaway, an embarrassingly low number that factored into the in-season makeover.

3. Gang (really) green: Be prepared to see a lot of young players on defense over the final nine games -- Malachi Moore, Jarvis Brownlee Jr. and Azareye'h Thomas in the secondary, Kiko Mauigoa at linebacker and Jowon Briggs on the line. They're all rookies and second-year players. There's also Mazi Smith, a third-year tackle acquired in the Williams trade.

"We can win with that," defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said, trying to put a positive spin on a tough situation.

3) Eagles defense underwent bye week makeover
Teams don't normally transform to the degree Philadelphia did at the trade deadline. The Eagles, who during last year's Super Bowl run sported the NFL's second-ranked scoring defense, were apparently none too pleased with a unit that ranked 19th in points allowed at the season's halfway point. Therefore, general manager Howie Roseman worked his magic. He acquired cornerback Michael Carter II, who has played 65 games over five seasons for the Jets, on Oct. 29, and three days later traded the Ravens for two-time Pro Bowl corner Jaire Alexander. Then, on Nov. 3, he landed pass rusher Jaelan Phillips from the Dolphins. Carter brings versatility, with the ability to play nickel and safety, to a group already highlighted by Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean and Reed Blankenship, while Alexander becomes one of the more experienced, decorated backups a team could have to rotate into the lineup. They'll both need some time to fully acclimate -- for example, Alexander (knee/coach's decision) isn't traveling for the game -- but Phillips could presumably hit the ground running on passing downs alongside fellow edge rushers Josh Ucheand Jalyx Hunt. There's suddenly a plethora of big-name players available to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio following a Philly facelift over the Eagles' bye week.

God help me, I'm thinking of picking up Dallas for next week's matchup vs LV. I currently have Cleveland (facing Baltimore) and Indy (on bye, followed by KC). I generally shy away from crappy defenses with good matchups, but the alternatives are Chicago (@Minn) or Wash (Mia)

Picked Dallas also, LV is really bad.

You guys are crazy. If I have one rule for myself this season at this time, it’s to not stream the Dallas or Cincy DST under any circumstances. Best of luck to both of you.
