20th Anniversary coming up - where to go for vacation? (1 Viewer)

We've got all these miles built up through Southwest so if you had to pick from these destinations from MSP, where would you go?

We're not lay on the beach types nor are we late night party people. When we went to Hawaii we hiked the crater, rode bikes down Haleakala, snorkeled, etc.

And before you say "shoot the lock off the wallet and go somewhere more expensive", realize that my wife is 1/32 Jew and squeezes every drop of blood she can from that stone so it's not me worried about the expense.

This would be sometime in March.

pick one of the following places that you might not have visited yet

Chicago

New York

DC

Seattle

Portland

San Francisco

All great cities.

Been to New Orleans? There's plenty to do there besides Bourbon St. partying. Awesome food, tons of culture, great people watching, good music, etc. etc.

Orlando and go to Epcot...

Then when people ask what you did for your 20th anniversary you can say "we traveled around the world!" :excited:

Of all the Disney parks, Epcot is the last one I'll go to again.

It's like a high tech Renaissance Fair - pay money to get in and then pay more money to actually do stuff.

Make it April and head to French Quarter Fest in the middle of the month or Jazz Fest on the last weekend of April.

I did this for my wife's birthday a few years ago and now we go every year to JF.

The "not late night party people" could be interpreted as "no crowds".

So anything with "Fest" in it probably won't work.

Anyone been to Puerto Rico? Are there things to do there or is it just primarily for relaxing?
Outside of the resorts, it's OK. It wouldn't be tops on my list for tropical destinations, but you could entertain yourself for a few days.

Plenty of good food. Plenty of clubs and I know you said you're not a late night partier but there's nightlife that would fall short of that as well. Gambling at some hotels if you're interested. There are some historic forts that can be pretty cool to visit. You can do a nighttime tour of one of the Bio Bays.

Savannah/Tybee Island

Charleston

Lots of artsy-fartsy stuff, antiques, good food and history type stuff to walk around and see.

Given the fact that it'll be March and you live in Minnesota, and given the fact that you're both active, I'd go to Phoenix and immediately drive north to Sedona. Gorgeous area which has a ton of hiking -- after Sedona you can always go back to Phoenix to a Scottsdale resort for a little R&R before heading back to Minnesota.

That's actually what I was thinking.

I'd mentioned the Grand Canyon to her but she wants to take our kids there as a family.

If you do go to Sedona, make sure you take a pink jeep tour.

Is that a euphemism?

No -- it's a legitimate touring company -- check the link.

Take a bus to Fort Hancock, Texas and then catch a ride to Zihuatanejo...

Honestly, I'd pick a major city that I haven't been to and take in the sites. Congrats on 20 years.

Aruba?

Just gorgeous and I'm not necessarily a beach person. Really didn't spend time with anyone but my (now) wife.

This was my suggestion. There's everything to do there. San Juan has great sites and history, great beaches and resorts, fantastic restaurants and culture. Island wide, you have nature reserves, parks and forests, small towns, beach towns...

My wife and I spent a few days of our honeymoon in San Juan and we are not big beach people but enjoyed it a little, loved the parties, LOVED the restaurants and now want to see the rest of the island

As noted above, Im not a big beach person either. Aruba bored the crap out of me personally. Great (but windy) beaches, lots of typical resorts and it felt like I was in an upscale mall / subdivision in Arizona most of the time. But beach folks (and I guess some others?) love it.
