32 team league, 1.06 rookie pick problem. (1 Viewer)

I'm in a 32 team, 40 man roster IDP dynasty league. We start 8 offensive players, 11 idp, and 1 PK and 1 punter.  Most everyone worth anything is pretty much already on a roster.  The only QB on my team right now is Brock Osweiler. I have the 1.06 rookie selection and think I should be targeting Deshaun Watson (or next best QB) at this position. If I take the best non-QB available (most likely Mike Williams) I'd have to take someone like Chad Kelly or Nate Piederman with the 50th overall pick and then enter into bidding wars in the free agent auction for one of the 3 available starting veteran QB's (Andrew Luck, Andy Dalton, Tyrod Taylor). There are 7 teams in this league without a starting caliber QB on the roster, so I'd have to fight it out with those 6 other teams if I wanted to land one of those 3 guys. Drafting a rookie QB like Watson or Mahomes seems like the right thing to do but I wanted to know what you all might do.

If you only start 1 QB, I would be reluctant to take Watson over Williams, but given the context you stated about 7 teams not having a legit starting QB and you only have Osweiler, I might lean towards the QB in this case.  How realistic is it for you to win Luck, Taylor or Dalton?  If you are confident you have enough auction money to win one of them, then I would lean towards the BPA, which most likely means Williams (IMO).  If not, then I would lean towards the best QB available.

In a 32-team league, QBs are absolute gold because of the overwhelming positional scarcity.  (After a season or so, many teams won't even have one to start.)

If Watson actually makes it to 6 in that setup, I would absolutely take him ahead of Williams.  You will always be able to find someone to stuff into a WR spot in your lineup, who might get you a couple catches.  You can't avoid taking a 0 at QB otherwise.

This was the reason I largely quit playing in 32-team leagues...

Starting lineup requirements are:

1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 TE,  2  FLEX (rb,wr,te), 1 PK, 1 Punter, 1 DT, 2 DE, 2 LB, 2 CB, 2 S, 2 def flex.

My available auction funds are decent, but most of the other 6 teams without a starting QB have more money available. This is likely to make Luck, Tyrod Taylor, and Andy Dalton very expensive, and taking one will hurt my ability to find quality players at other positions.

How many players and positions do you want to be able to fill in the auction?  IMO, this rookie class of QBs is very risky and I would not be surprised if none of them turn out to be good NFL starters.  Given you don't have a QB and how good Luck is, I wouldn't necessarily be against using almost all of your money to get him.  I would do whatever you can to get a real starting QB.  It partially depends on your roster, though.  I might even take a QB at 1.06 and still aggressively go after one of the free agent QBs.

With 32 teams and a requirement to only start 1 WR, I wouldn't take Williams over Watson even if you showed up in a time machine from 2027 and guaranteed me he'd have the best career of any WR in this draft class. You'll be able to find another guy to plug into your 2 flex spots very easily with or without Williams. You won't have that same luxury at QB if you pass on Watson and then come up short in the auction.

And just because you draft Watson doesn't mean you can't then go after another starter in the auction - in fact that's exactly I would recommend. You'll be in the driver's seat since if the bidding gets truly exorbitant, you'll have Watson as your fallback. If it doesn't, you'll have a solid starting QB plus an immensely valuable trade chip in Watson.
