I fail to see a problem here.

Vocabulary items that appeared on the worksheet included the terms "white privilege," "indigenous peoples," "transgender," "institutional racism," gender pronouns, the term "Latinx," as well as other controversial issues.

I mean, they are vocabulary words. Would be prefer our high school students to just be oblivious to every controversial subject or would we prefer they have knowledge to be able to argue one way or the other?

I want my kids discussing controversial topics when they are in high school. A good teacher will remain somewhat neutral and help steer a productive debate.

I just started an Ethics Bowl team at the high school where I’m teaching, Today was our first meeting and three kids showed up. That felt like a solid turnout in a school of 2,700.

I only skimmed it quickly but what I liked about it is that it seemed very intentional about the purpose being to explore and understand the different angles/sides of an issue. As an elective/optional and facilitated by a good teacher (one that can truly deliver on what the program outlines)...I love this.

I'm not sure how it works in every school district, but in the school district here there's an annual school budget vote, and there are school board member elections every year. The board here has 6 members and 2 of them are voted on annually. So people can vote in the elections literally, both for the budget and for the school board members, and if they don't like it they can vote with their feet. Harassing the school board meeting is low-level cosplay nonsense. We don't need it here. But to be completely frank, I don't care what happens in other school districts, so people can knock themselves out I guess.

Im not a fan of overzealous people acting like jerks and over the top. Thats what I see a lot of in some of these school board meetings (at least the ones that make the videos on twitter). That said, when you see citizens (people who can vote) march on the capitol or protest to make sure their voice is heard in various forums where the law makers and politicians can hear them...do you also think that is inappropriate?

1. Do they even have kids in the school?
2. Are they from the district? (I've seen articles highlighting people protesting issues at various districts)
3. If yes to the first two - did they attempt the more adult thing and go up the chain of command (ie talk to the teacher, principal, etc..).

Yes, I agree with these points. I should clarify it's the over-the-top and harassing style disruptions that serve no good purpose, IMO.

You need to understand that identity and biological gender are different.

People understand perfectly that there are traits that are typically feminine and traits that are typically masculine. But none of that changes what a man/male is and what a woman/female is. What the gender identity folks are doing is to make those terms completely meaningless. It is asinine.

No, they're not actually. They're correctly acknowledging that biological gender and gender identity are different things. Biological gender is fixed (although it can get to some weird in-between situations via surgery and hormones... But the DNA doesn't change). Gender identity isn't fixed. As it's a social construct and that itself varies from society to society, and within our own society over time.

They're different things and continuing to ignore that nuance is something you're doing, not something they're doing.

If you're concerned about people using different bathrooms, as an example, do you not realize how much more effective your arguments would be if you said you supported bathroom separation based on biology and not on something fluid like gender identity? You could actually make a good argument that resonates. Instead of the current argument where, in my opinion, people come off sounding close minded and intentionally obtuse.

I mean, think it through. Biological gender based arguments about which sports teams are appropriate ARE thousands of times more impactful than saying "you think men can have babies." Reasonable people willingly engage in reasonable discussion. For the life of me I can't understand why the current arguments are constantly being advanced when there are actually plenty of reasonable takes that argue in the same direction much more effectively.

Random stranger reading through this and don't know what has been posted since but it isn't completely true that gender identity doesn't have a biological component. Gene's express themselves differently and humans are "polygenic" meaning sex is determined by how thousands of genes interact and express themselves. Eye color might be one gene. Sexual identity is thousands interacting. Think of sexuality as a spectrum. Actually native Americans believed there were 7 sexes, other cultures are many more than that.

For example a girl can be biologically female and know from an early age that their identity is male. Stop and imagine as a guy growing up knowing 100% you are a female, how difficult it would be to be forced to wear men's clothes, play male sports, and act patriarchal simply because of parental and societal pressure. Or a girl that believes (or actually is) male. Their gender identity is absolutely derived from genetic expression.

As far as genetic expression goes, think of hair color. It's insane to think (like Nazis) that a specific hair color was better and had to do with morality. It's insane to think the same about gender identity. In fact, we are pretty certain gay males inherent sexual identity from their mothers (estrogen) and lesbians from their fathers (testosterone).

I will also add that it's unlikely the people complaining about this issue actually care much about it. Conservatives love to virtue signal to the tribe and banging their chest like apes is normal animal behavior. Most social science these days lets us know they are largely driven by a patriarchal viewpoint about the world and how you can tell their political identity. Conservatives are largely driven by fear and disgust (Haidt). Their identity is largely wrapped around the belief that men are better, stronger, more powerful, assertive and thus "better". Republicans use this issue to design propaganda to rally them to the vote against their own interests.

Republicans also promote an agenda that normally hurts these people but they don't care if their families have worse education, health care, roads and clean water if would mean they had to other sexes as equal. It's also pretty obvious the more educated and empathetic have more wealth on average and vote against their own interest as well, that is to pay more tax and support redistributive policies that help society in as a whole.
