Makerbot has been making nice cheap machines for a few years now. It used to require a lot of tinkering and assembly, more of a DIY machine, but now they have gone full blown pre-assembled.The build envelope is too small, but it prints out comparable parts to our much, much more expensive Dimension printer.
How much does the material cost for one of these?

Thought this was awesome, used regular printer paper:

That's awesome.

We use a 3D printer at work for prototypes and it has saved us tons of money. Ours is the traditional plastic printer. That paper one is very cool.
Paper is a huge breakthrough for consumer applications. Cost of the materials was a big negative (~$1.6/cu. in.) but if this is 1/10 the price you can make decent sized models (say 5 cu. in.) for about $4. That price would make it viable for use as an educational tool in schools and they could probably get the paper donated for free.

If some of you are serious about printing, I suggest checking out 123D Catch to capture real life objects that exist around you. It just uses your phones camera, and does a pretty remarkable job stitching the object together from 20'ish photos. Download Meshmixer (also free, and also an AutoDesk product) to mess around with the meshes that 123D Catch spits out. It will do some autorepair stuff, but the real cool stuff is manual.

If you have any questions, let me know. I spend hours some days doing this stuff (and getting paid)

Just posting to say that this 3D printing stuff is pretty damn addicting.  It's simply amazing what you can do with a $300 printer!

Plus as @WhatDoIKnow posted earlier, it's mesmerizing to just sit there and watch it do its thing.  Before too long I want to install a webcam and capture some time lapse videos.
