4-decade SB trend continues (1 Viewer)

Most of us old-timers remember that the SB has gone through long stretches of AFC or NFC dominence, but while browsing past winners I came across a surprising trend.

Starting with the first SB after the merger (1970, SB V):

In the 70s, AFC dominates 8-2 (Cowboys win only 2 for NFC)

In the 80s, NFC dominates 8-2 (Raiders win only 2 for AFC)

In the 90s, NFC dominates 8-2 (Broncos win only 2 for AFC)

In the 00s, AFC dominates 8-2 (Bucs/Giants only 2 for NFC)*

*Obviously dependent on Colts win this weekI suppose you could say that the trend is already broken this decade, with the less successful NFC being represented by 2 teams, not 1. But I still find the 8-2 trend interesting if the Colts keep it going.

too random. Too many factors determine the outcomes. Perhaps you read the stars as well?

I didn't say it would cause the Colts to win. Nor did I offer a prediction on the outcome of the game. Just noting a longterm trend. I agree that it's a coincidence, and one that doesn't affect the outcome of Sunday's game. Just a coincidence that struck me.

I thought this was pretty cool. I don't think mightmorse was implying anyone to go and bet the farm because of this. Just a neat stat. Lighten up.

back in the early 90's, I was fed up with NFC teams winning. I liked pretty much every AFC team (except for the raiders, of course) better than any NFC team, so the Superbowl discrepancy really irked me. I made a solemn vow at that time to always cheer for the AFC team (except for the raiders), and I've held onto that.Tampa Bay winning was bittersweet, I didn't care for that SB much at all.

Cool stat and my money is on that 8-2 trend to continue crazy numbers like that tend to stand for whatever reason.
This is akin to seeing the roulette board showing 8 blacks in a row and betting black because the streak just has to continue.

I absolutely cannot walk by a roulette wheel with 8 blacks in a row and not bet red. I have to, and have been fairly lucky with it. I do realize the odds don't change, but can't help myself. So I guess I should bet the Saints huh?

Not only is it wrong to bet red there, but you should increase your bet on black. Bet with the streak, not against it and you'll typically do much better. Think of how much you would have lost if you started betting red after 3 or 4 blacks in a row.

Also Because of the Dominant teams for one league in the decade.

70's - 4 Super Bowls Steelers (one in 1980 but for 1979 season)

80's - 4 Super Bowls 49ers (one in 1990 but for 1989 season)

90's - 3 Super Bowls Cowboys

00's - 3 Super Bowls Patriots

Whoever is the next dominant team for the next decade should have that similar record for the conference this upcoming decade.
