50 Best Tacos in America (1 Viewer)

F man. I went back "home" to Maryland last year around this time. They have zilch as far as Mexican food. I had to drive to DE just to get some carne to grill up.

But they sure like their vicodin/oxycontin back there. To each their own I suppose.

Glad to see they had pink taco #1.
If that is the case, the list is a sham. And I have never tried them.
You don't know what you're missing!

Thanks for the heads up. Never heard that one before. :eyeroll:

But I was actually referring to that ####ty taco company.

But not that ####ty new one Taco Bell is launching: "The Taco Co" which is instagram-centric. Whatever the #### that means.

I'm dubious of any list that includes four NYC establishments. That said, the little hole in the wall on 10th Ave btwn 47th/48th (Hell's Kitchen) is a ####### gem. They used to be jammed into the back of a bodega, but this year they got wise, dumped the whole grocery store, and remodeled as a 13 seat restaurant. It'll make your knees weak.

Taquería TehuitzingoThey also just opened a second restaurant on 9th Ave just below 42nd - actually closer to me - but I haven't tried it yet..

Oh, and #2 on the list is strictly tourist trade. Los Tacos No. 1 is located in the Chelsea Market. They must have bought that ranking.

I've tried the other two NYC locations on the list, and while they are decent, they shouldn't be on anyone's best of list. Best of New York, OK, but that's not saying much when it comes to Mexican.

I trust these tacos were all made by the proper Mexicans?

If not, then it's my understanding that the whole list has to be called into question.

Before opening it I thought to myself that if Texas didn't represent half of the top 50, the list was flawed.

They have Rays in San Antonio and Torchy's taco trucks on there, which to me means they did their due diligence. I moved from the center of the taco universe (San Antonio) to the end of the taco earth (Maryland). suX0r

In order to assemble our ranking of America’s best tacos, we asked more than 200 of the nation’s leading food writers and taco authorities to send over a list of their absolute favorite tacos in the country. Not taquerías, mind you, but individual tacos they believe to be the absolute finest offering from their favorite taco shops. We asked them to include only brick-and-mortar taquerías as opposed to trucks, carts, and the like (that’s a ranking for another day, and also rules out Los Angeles’ popular Ricky’s). We also didn’t include breakfast tacos, because most would agree that those are an entirely different food altogether. We rounded out their submissions with tacos mentioned in best-of lists, both in print and online, as well as our personal favorites, and then assembled a list of more than 150 tacos, which we divided by region: East Coast, Midwest, Texas, Southwest, and West Coast. We then invited our panel of experts to vote for their favorites. At the end of the day, we were left with the 50 best tacos in America.

Yeah, any NYC taco joint on a best of list is suspect. I volunteer to head that way next week to give it a first hand shot.

There are some Dallas places that ruin some of those Austin places. You just have to go to some seriously sketchy parts of town though.

Then there is the gringo place fuel city which I guess is too popular to get on this list? It has made top 10 of these types of lists before and was a total omission this time?

List is a joke
Why? You've been to all those 50 places?
no. but i've been to a few of them. take bear flag for instance, it's about as anglo as it gets. the food is decent, but it's not in the same ball park as authentic fish tacos
The best places in San Antonio weren't listed there, but the ones that were listed are a hell of a lot better than what I can get where I am now. The top 50 places are all going to be hole-in-the-wall, family run, old Mexican ladies in the kitchen joints. Those are generally off the beaten path of the food reviewer.

Was just at La Taqueria in the Mission the other week. They are truly fantastic tacos.
I haven't been in about six months. Used to go every week. Great place.

Yup. Instantly invalidates the entire list.

List should be all Cali, Texas and New Mexico.

Sure, because location means much more than talent.

Putting a NY taco place at #2 is designed to generate discussion and little more. It would be like putting a California pizza restaurant at #2 on the list of 50 best pizza places in America. Could you imagine the outrage in that scenario?

Funny, but I don't recall say anything about that.

I'm sure it's a fine taco.

So you would completely accept a list from the same people that had a California pizza place at #2?

Really? You won't answer that question? Seems like almost exactly the same thing, I reversed the location and changed the food, what is so difficult about answering that question?

You could have put a cherry on top. It still has nothing to do with what I said.

how do you go from mexican food to vicodin

seafood down?

So what about answering the question truly bothers you, Christo?
Best deep dish pizza in America - Lefty's, San Diego
For all I know it may be true. I've never been to San Diego let alone eaten a deep dish pizza from Lefty's. Hell, "Lefty" could be Lou Malnati's or Giordano's long-lost cousin.
He's a middle aged white dude from Nebraska who owns two Subway franchises and a Burger King in addition to Lefty's.
