5x5 H2H Roto--#3 overall pick (1 Viewer)

It's a 5x5 H2H roto through Yahoo

Batting caegories= average, HR's, RBI's, SB and runs

Pitching= wins, ERA, WHIP, K's and Saves

Who is it this year? Is it crazy to pick Kershaw with this pick?
In H2H roto, yes it is crazy since you can just overload categories in pitching by throwing starting a ton of SPs every week.

The consensus picks will be Goldschmidt or McCutchen. I would go McCutchen just because he has a bit of a longer track record than Goldschmidt and there is less of a chance for McCutchen to not produce like a top 5 pick than Goldy.

3rd pick is brutal this year. would be happy with any of the 4/5/6 though Get whoever is left from the Goldy,McCutch, Cano, Jones

We're limited to only 4 transaction in the 7-day week so I guess that helps. It's only my second year doing this so I'm kind of new to fantasy baseball but when I got around to looking at the availible guys they all seemed to be the same.

I'm not in to the advanced stats or anything but guys like McCutchen worry me. He doesnt seem to do anything well

Goldschmidt, like you mentioned, doesnt have the track record and seems to be in a deep poistion. Same with Chris Davis. The power numbers were huge but can they be replicated?

The guy I'm most intrigued by is Adam Jones. He seems to be on his way up, in a good line-up and a fairly decent hitters park but can you take him 3rd?

I'm thinking my best move may be to jump back to 5 if possible

3rd is drop-off, but I actually feel the bigger drop is from 4 to 5? I view it as:

1. Trout

2. Cabrera

3. Goldschmidt

4. McCutchen

5. Whoever

No one a fan of Adam Jones?
He's in the discussion for #5, but no I don't like him more than anyone in the top 4.

But you see a big drop off from McCutchen to him?

A lot depends on your league format. If you have to fill 5 OF slots, I'd go with McCutchen but I'd probably favor Goldschmidt if the league was using Yahoo's small default rosters.

Adam Jones loses some of his appeal in OBP leagues.

8 teams

Roster limits are:

Catcher- 1

1st Base- 1

2nd Base- 1

3rd Base- 1

Short Stop- 1

Outfield- 4

Utility- 2

SP- 3

RP- 2

SP/RP- 4

Bench- 5

Total is 25

I think my tiers are

trout/cabrera

goldy/mccutch/cano

then a bunch of guys that I don't love like jones/davis/kershaw/gonzalez/etc

I think with an 8 team mixed league with small rosters, you can draft purely based on projected numbers. Positional scarcity doesn't really enter into it. I'd go Goldschmidt over McCutchen because it's easier to find somebody to make up a 10-15 SB delta than a 15-20 HR difference.

I actually like to go after scarce positions early in smaller leagues just because A. There's often a big dropoff after the top 2 or 3 at those positions and B. I have more confidence in getting late-round steals or wire gems at 1B and OF than thin spots.

However, in this particular league you've got 4 OF and 2 UT spots, so I agree and would just go with the best numbers.

You think Goldschmidt can repeat or do better than last season?

Not really but McCutchen is probably just as likely to regress.

I've never played in an 8 team league or H2H. I'm purely guessing about draft strategies.

Statistically who do you see putting up better numbers this year out of the following:

Adam Jones

Goldschmidt

Bryce Harper

I sometimes end up in one with work friends. They tend to be mostly casual players, so that may influence my opinion on strategy.

do you guys expect mauers numbers to improve over say his 2012 season where he played 147 games at catcher?
He'll do marginally better in the counting categories and be a positive contributor to AVG or OBP. But he's not going to provide much power or any speed. The move to first should make him a bit more consistent but he's a known quantity at this stage of his career. You'll have to go catcher really early if you really want him. I won't.

If in a points league, would u say a 10% increase in total points for the season realistic?

The Twins have already been DHing him a lot to keep his bat in the lineup.

given his supporting cast I have a hard time expecting more counting stats.

If anyone cares I was able to move back to #5 and still get McCutchen with Adam Jones in the second round. The first 4 went:

Trout

Miggy

Chris Davis

Goldschmidt

Kershaw actually went 8th

I have the 3rd pick in my pts league. Miggy & Kershaw are going 1-2. Trout was a keeper. So Im deciding between Cutch & Waino. I know, too early for a pitcher but in this league stud pitchers score 700 pts while stud hitters score 600.

Who'd you keep? What's the scoring system?

kept Goldy, Harper, Fernandez, Sale, Jansen

scoring system is pretty generic for hitters... is 1 pt for single, 2 pts for double, etc

for pitchers its 1 pt per IP, -1 pts ER, 1 pt per K, 12 pts for win, -5 for L, 5 for QS, plus bonus pts for CG & SHO.

Last yr Cutch was the 5th highest hitter and scored 608 pts. Waino was 2nd ranked pitcher and score 729 pts

Anyone worried about Waino's usage in 2013? Career high 241 ip + 12 post season innings.

I go Cutch. You already have 2 stud SP and a closer. Build the hitting. Especially if you have the option to stream SPs during the season.

This may be a minor issue but I want to make sure I have the best people on my team. Right now my last bench spot belongs to Leonya Martin...I've reviewed the FA pool and I noticed that Adam Eaton is still out there. After a little research it looks like Eaton is supposed to bat leadoff while Martin is slated to bat 9th. Is that enough to make the move in your opinion?

I like both of those guys. Between the two, I'd lean slightly to Eaton. Really comes down to your personal preference, IMO.

I personally prefer Eaton

I dont really know much about either one of them. Rotowire seems really high on Martin and CBS seems to prefer Eaton. i guess what I should have asked is what do you use as a tie breaker in situations like this? Would the fact that Eaton bats leadoff be enough? I saw that Martin looked awful against LHP last season is he a threat to be platooned?

No

First off, lets compare teams. the best I can do is look at recent data

In 2013 the Rangers scored 730 runs, the ChiSox 598

In 2012 the Rangers scored 802 vs 748 for Chicago

so, right off the bat, you have to figure the Rangers will score more runs.

Next, you need to look at situations.

The Rangers outfield is pretty set with Choo, Rios and Martin. They have lost a number of 4th of type guys over the past few years, guys like Murphy, Gentry, that would get 100 or so games out of the of position. Barring injury, I think Martin will get a ton of starts and he is their best option at CF.

The White Sox have 4 starting OF's on their team and a number of other options if need be. Eaton should get the bulk of starts, but barring a trade, he very well may see the bench a few times per week.

Will batting 1st garner Eaton a few extra ab's over the course of the season? Sure, if he plays 140 games. But I think Eaton gets between 450 - 500 ab's this year and Martin 550 or more ab's (again barring injury).

And managers of both teams like to run, texas with nearly 200 attempted sb's last year, chisox with 150, so all things being equal, I'll take my chance with the team that I think scores more runs, and the guy I think gets about 75-100 more ab's.
