80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (2 Viewers)

Well, I'm just going to have to live with the fact that some songs that I love and are important to me just aren't going to make the mix just so that I can spotlight a few that don't get enough love.

Like this one. It's beautifully anthemic. Needs to be selected.

19.12 - It Can Happen, Yes (Wildcard)

Love the bass work.

Another SF band... saw them a few times and loved their first and only album (Fun Terminal). Kind of more urban, little more punkish B52s vibe, but without the vocal chops and a little more ragged... also put on a great show. I googled them, and it appears they have done some reunion events... the lead male singer now looks exactly like my 80somethign jewish grandfather did.... which doesn't make me feel too young.

19.13-- Twisted Thing-- The Mutants (indie)

Always been a fan of Yes, but the way Chris Squire has handled things lately has made me less interested.

Yes man Squire fears Anderson reunion would lower their income

Yes bassist Chris Squire admits one of the reasons they haven’t invited original singer Jon Anderson back into the band is that his health issues could limit their ability to make money.

The prog giants hired Benoit David in 2008 after Anderson suffered a near-fatal respiratory condition. The frontman insists they didn’t tell him he’d been dismissed.

Earlier this year David experienced his own health problems. He says he discovered Jon Davidson had been given his job when he read it in a magazine.

But Squire suggests there was more to the lineup change than just health matters.

He tells Rolling Stone: “He started to get a little wobbly onstage. I thought he was having a cold or had gotten sick on the road – that happens all the time. But in Benoit’s case it seemed to not be getting better. We toured Europe after that and once again he started to go a little soft.

“But it was more than that: he just seemed to not want to carry on doing the job. I assumed that after the Christmas break he’d feel differently – but he didn’t. We figured it was time to change partners.”

Davidson had been brought in with David’s blessing, but the departed frontman had thought the arrangement was temporary.

In February he said: “I was advised to cease touring for the foreseeable future in order to avoid further damage to my voice. I had to inform my fellow band members I was unable to confirm my ability for forthcoming concerts.

“I felt I was letting everyone down. The band members asked if I would mind being replaced for the April shows. I was pleased to learn Jon would be my replacement.

“I subsequently learned from a band member’s interview that I had officially left Yes and that my departure was permanent.

“As this is the situation, everyone should know that I will be eternally grateful for the opportunity I was given.”

Anderson, who’s back on the road in the US next month, has loudly condemned the way Yes treated him. Last year he said: “People get into that place where they don’t care about people. To them, it’s just business.”

Squire responds: “I don’t think Jon has anything to be bitter about – we cancelled a whole tour when his respiratory problems came back. One of the main reasons we aren’t working with him now is that he’s only able to do a certain amount of shows a week. It would limit our ability to move and make money, really.”

But the bassist won’t rule out a future reunion: “I would never close the door on that possibility. The idea of ‘Yes on Broadway’ has come up. It requires the collaboration not only with Jon Anderson, but also other ex-members including Patrick Moraz and obviously Rick Wakeman. It would have to depend on if there’s any interest from that side as well.”
You kick two lead singers out of your band because they were sick, and "could limit their ability to make money?"

Now I know why I liked ABWH with Tony Levin on bass. ;)

Did like how the UPC code for the album had 90125 in it.

The title refers the album's number in the Atlantic Records catalog (and appears as the central group of digits in the album's UPC code).

I remember when MTV first premiered the video for this. I think they played it all day non-stop, but with the band members in slightly different poses.

I love that we have people who want this over now and people who want 5 more rounds
I would go 5 more rounds - I just dislike waiting days for picks when more than 1/2 of the drafters are on and ready to draft throughout most of the day.

Just had this idea for a draft, but not sure if there's enough there for it... pairing songs draft. Same song title, same theme, same cover, sounds the same, shared musicians... etc.

You draft both songs of the pair each pick. Or maybe... it's an ongoing continuation, where you pick one song which is based on the immediately previous pick?

May need some fine tuning, but I like the idea a lot.

Saw these guys a few times. They put on a fun show. They headlined SF Punk Homecoming last fall, which was a two day festival of old West Coast punk bands. We passed on it because they didn't sell one day tickets.

I worked two blocks from the real Fun Terminal, an arcade next to the Transbay Bus Terminal. A few games of pinball there was a great finish to a cheap lunch of a hot dog and beer at the Wagon Wheel or tacos and beer from Charlie's. They're all gone now, replaced by another high-rise.

I remember that place wella nd I remember getting a kick out of seeing the album for the first time. I got a much seedier vibe from it as a young teen than I did from the other arcades I'd frequent (there were a couple around Fisherman's Wharf) that were close to public transportation. I remember going in there with my 2 gbs and being the first one to realize that other "kids" were sizing us up. I got us out of there pretty fast and back to the safety of our suburban 7-11.

My favorite old arcades in the City were the big one mid-Market between 7th and 8th and the one was on Broadway across the alley from the Mabuhay. the arcade on Market was open after bar time and would attract a sleazy clientele at all hours. The one on Broadway was a good place to go between bands at the Mab, On Broadway or The Stone.

18.16 - Bon Jovi – Living on a Prayer (Acoustic) MTV 1989 Music Awards - Ahead of It's Time

True or not, and I'm sure Bon Jovi would love to take the credit, this performance seems to have ushered in the popularity of acoustic/unplugged music in America.

Unfortunately it isn't available on Spotify.
I think wanted dead or alive was the unplugged starter
We are both correct; they played acoustic versions of both songs at the '89 MTV Video Music awards.

In September 1989, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora performed Livin' On A Prayer and Wanted Dead Or Alive only with two acoustic guitars on the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. The performance has generally been acknowledged as the inspirational spark that led to the MTV Unplugged series and the catalyst for the subsequent popularity of the unplugged movement in popular music.

Bobby Brown - My Prerogative

R&B/New Jack
I can not believe this was still there.
I don't like Bobby Brown as a person, but I like that song a lot.
So we have Bobby Brown and Don Henley in the ashole club in this draft. Anyone else?

FWIW I'm sure if we examined most musicians, a large majority would easily slot into this club. NTTAWWT

Happy to participate

Are you volunteering to run the draft?

If so, you probably want to have your ideas crystal clear to avoid arguments once it starts.

The lead singer of April Wine is kind of a ####.

18.xx Good Life - Inner City (Disco/Dance/House)

Crossover Detroit Techno hit from Kevin Saunderson and company
I though this was 90s, but 1988 strikes again.

Good pick!
I realize I'm not the target demographic but a lot of dance music only sounds good to me on the dance floor. It's too repetitious to listen to otherwise. This is one of the few house tracks that I love outside of its natural surroundings.

I don't think Don Henley is a bad person. I do think Bobby Brown is.
Henley was my guilty pleasure and I agree. I generally dislike his music and he speaks with the pompatus of Henley but has done some good charity work and showed a sense of self-deprecation when he performed Don Henley Must Die on-stage with Mojo Nixon.
