80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

Not sure what is up with the formatting... non US/UK and Guilty Pleasure are left. Pretty happy with the songs considering all artists were unchosen when I drafted them.

The Guilty pleasure category is a hard one to define apart from one's own opinion of something you shouldn't like, but not only like you love.

David Sylvian clearly comes into that category for me (sorry Floppo). I hated few artists with as much passion as I did him and Japan.

Arty, pretentious ####s that thought they were better than everyone else. Most beautiful man my ####.

Then came this song which I first heard upon watching Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and I didn't recognize that awful tinny voice.

Of course this track is brilliant and it still is the only thing I can listen to completion from Sylvian. Call it irrational, but this definitely falls into the guilty pleasure category.

I had to even find a clip that didn't feature his "beautiful" face

19.10 - David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto - Forbidden Colours - Guilty Pleasure - 4:41
:hot:

tinny? TINNY?!!!

THAT'S IT.

this is a great song- thought it wasn't on Spotify any more?

and guilty pleasure... it's a tough one for me- I think it's mostly what you're describing... some artist or band that just rubbed you the wrong way for whatever reason (in your case, poor taste and lack of intelligence), but still put out a song that beat the odds and worked for you.

Nice to see I'm not the first to pick a Hoodoo Guru's song.

I'm going with their 2nd single which references both the Japanese failed invasion of Darwin in WW2 and the devastating Cyclone Tracy which hit Darwin on Christmas eve and then came back and whacked the city again a 2nd time on the way out to sea on Christmas day.

18.10 - Hoodoo Gurus - Tojo - 3:11 - Punk/Post Punk
I think every time you draft a Hoodoo Gurus tune, I remember and mention that the band I was in in HS did two covers of theirs... Like Wow/Wipeout and Dig it Up. I can remember that, but I can't remember if we were called Captain Reemo or Exploding White Mice. Jeebus- I'm hoping as I get older, I remember a third option.

Im going to shuffle things around a little to make my mix better (for me at least)

I am going to throw back Back Street Girl as a cover song and instead draft

9.3 Mommys Little Monster, Social Distortion, Title Track

so you can imagine how difficult it is for me to pick a punk song

Trust me it will be Exploding Reemers in a few years.

Listening to the New Jack Swing tunes... tough for me to pick one. I had it stuck in my head that I was going to take Poison by Bel Biv Devoe, but when I just went to look at it, I found out it was in the 90s. But I feel compelled to take a New Jack tune.. so I'll throw this one out there- I kinda remember actually liking it.

20.7- Night and Day-- Al B. Sure! (R&B/ New Jack Swing)

and it's my favorite Sinatra tune too.

Yeah. Just PM'd you my own personal pick. Never will forget that song. Imagine if this was 69-73 or 75-79. Jeez. So much to choose from.

Anyway, have fun.

Today's the day to finalize picks. As far as I'm concerned, round 21 and 22 can be made anytime. I'm sure there will be some throwbacks as well as mixes are completed.

Let's try to have all that done by Sunday night, so Monday AM we can throw out some songs that were mixed and by them I'm sure we'll have some finished mixes to listen to as well.

20.2 -- Ana Ng -- They Might Be Giants (Ahead of its time)

This was a tough category for me. I settled on this because I do think the staccato beats feel pretty modern (and its amusing to think it was a style developed because they were distributing music on an answering machine). I suppose that nerd pop really wasn't all that novel considering DEVO, but its the best I got.

21.17 -- Never Enough -- L.A. Guns (Hair Metal)

Waiting on this category was a mistake, as I was probably sniped (at least on artist) about a dozen times over. But this still feels pretty typical of that whole Sunset Strip hair scene. I think the vocals are the songs' Achilles Heel. Have Sebastian Bach sing this sucker, and its a cheesy classic.

And last but not least, I'm moving Sonic Youth to "ahead of its time" and slotting this into indie/alt, as it is not quite as ahead of its time as the SY is..

It's a shame their best song (and biggest "hit") is not available.. I'll be providing that as well as 21 other great and not-so-great tracks that aren't on spotify in a big zip file mix once we're finished.

I love Phil Lewis! GB their entire first two records, they still sound great

Well, if it's even possible to enjoy this ridiculous mix, I hope that someone does. Looking forward to the rest of yours..

80s FFA - zilla

More to come. Still having fun, let's beat this #### to death. Eighties rule!

My only toss back - didn't like the King Missile in my mix- i guess in impeded what little flow there is in this mix.

Toss back: King Missile

Repick: The Dead Milkmen - Smokin' Banana Peels (silly/funny/weird)

My mix is up and ready for listening. Really didn't pick for much of a flow, so I just decided to put them in mild chronological order. It's not too bad, except maybe the Black Flag ---> Alabama transition in the beginning. Feel free to just hit shuffle as well

KPs FBG 80s

I didn't pick for a flow either, but I try to put the songs in a better flowing order once I've drafted all them.

Catchup time for me:

19.04 - Love My Way – The Psychedelic Furs - Punk/Post Punk

20.16 - Guilty Pleasures – She Blinded Me with Science - Thomas Dolby

21.04 - Wannabee '80s – Be My Yoko Ono – Barenaked Ladies

Tough category. Always thought BNL would have been big in the '80s. Some of their stuff is very 'poppy' and I bet they would have benefited from how well their style fits into video.

22.16 - You Can Call Me Al – Paul Simon - Wildcard

Popular music in the '80s was about videos. This is one of my favorite videos ever. Chevy Chase is hysterical, and I love the looks on Paul Simon's face when Chevy is doing the lip-syncing.

Sweet Jesus that's Smoooth.

This Spotify thing sucks - loads of tunes are digitally re-recorded and/or remastered. But too many to start re-picking, so it'll have to do.

Yeah, I had to use a demo version for one of my songs and a live version for another - but at least they were available.

I don't personally think their biggest hit is their best song, but I have it on my extended list on spotify. A live version that is remarkably good. I may have picked it today had you not grabbed the band. I like your choice a lot, top 5 rama song.

zamboni 80s mix

No Politics of Dancing, so went back to Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy" instead. Also a crappy live version of "On The Loose" ,but all I can get.

Not much rhyme or reason to the mix - just an electic bunch of songs which fits my taste buds.
