80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

1986 Jump Rope Tournament of Champions Original Soundtrack

With a full decade's worth of songs to choose from, I discarded a bunch of my favorites in order to keep the flow and this ridiculous concept intact.

Digital Underground – Doowutchyalike - Radio Mix - Rap/Hip Hop

Bootsy Collins – Body Slam - R & B/New Jack Swing

Frankie Smith – Double Dutch Bus - One Hit wonders

Malcolm McLaren – Double Dutch - Silly/Funny/Weird

Johnson Mkhalali – Joyce No. 2 - Non US/UK Band

Paul Simon – Graceland - Soft rock

Dwight Yoakam – Little Sister - Country

Fine Young Cannibals – Suspicious Minds - Cover songs

David & David – Welcome To The Boomtown - 1st song off first album

Don Henley – The Boys Of Summer - Guilty Pleasures

Roxy Music – Same Old Scene - Movie/TV "themes"

Pretenders – Brass In Pocket - 2009 Remastered - UK #1's

Orange Juice – Rip It Up - Punk/Post-punk

Diana Ross – Upside Down - Pop

Inner City – Good Life - Edit - Disco/Dance/House

For whatever reason I'm not able to right-click any songs in the Spotify web player. So the mix will be posted tonight. Weird.
Having the same problem.... can't get my last 2 songs in the playlist.
Chrome or Chromebook? Same thing was happening to me. I dumped the app and reloaded, still no luck. Did it again and it's working but I'm doing everything through right click afraid if I double click the bug will come back.

And last but not least, I'm moving Sonic Youth to "ahead of its time" and slotting this into indie/alt, as it is not quite as ahead of its time as the SY is..

It's a shame their best song (and biggest "hit") is not available.. I'll be providing that as well as 21 other great and not-so-great tracks that aren't on spotify in a big zip file mix once we're finished.

Dramarama - Last Cigarette

indie/alt rock
 Had their biggest hit on my favourite remaining songs list.

20.8 - True, Spandau Ballet (UK #1)

Obviously could have fit in "Guilty Pleasure" but this really is a good song. Moving "Call Me" to Dance category.

21.12 - American Made, Oak Ridge Boys (Country)

The ORB were huge in the 80's and need to be represented.

22.8 - I'm The Man, Anthrax (Rap/Hip Hop)

"Cheating"? I don't think so. Sampling the Jewish song "Hava Nagila", Sam Kinnison, Metallica, and Run DMC, and the Beastie Boys? What's not to like?

I wish their version of "Bring The Noise" was an 80's tune.

Yo man, watch the beat.

Firefox (I know, might as well be going through Compuserve).

zamboni 80s mix

No Politics of Dancing, so went back to Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy" instead. Also a crappy live version of "On The Loose" ,but all I can get.

Not much rhyme or reason to the mix - just an electic bunch of songs which fits my taste buds.
This is not working when I click it. I followed everyone before this so I think there is a small issue

This is bad form but my playlist will not be my draft. Do y'all really need Sweet Child o' Mine, Juice Newton, and a few others? I vote no, because I want to go all indie/alt/nw/post punk and make an extended list that will reflect best what I listened to the most. I'm doing this selfishly, but I really miss this music, those times, and that radio station. So I'm going to come up with about 2.5 hours, mostly fresh undrafted bands, and for me it will be like commercial free KROQ 25 years ago.

21.14 Punk/Post -- The Pogues, Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

Too early in the morning for some early decade hardcore. What a nice from them.

Your link just points to http://spotify/, not the specific playlist

Hey Northern Voice...great job running this thing. :hifive:

Good job everyone for not dragging it out and not duplicating picks (we had maybe one, right?).

Fun stuff.

Can you refresh my memory how to link the actual playlist?

Final pick. My last song is the theme of my mix, and it will be the lead song. We're on the road to nowhere, come on inside...

22.18 - The Road to Nowhere - Talking Heads (Silly/Funny/Weird)
Back to back homeruns for simey. No surprise there. How TH lasted so long is crazy, but yeah, it's because the 80s RULE!
Vike picked "This Must be the Place (Naive Melody)" earlier in the draft.
Thanks for always keeping me in line,

Speaking of songs we danced to that weren't dance, burning down the house was about as much fun as could be had.

:goodposting:

The draft moved along very well. There was a consistent flow of songs to listen to and discuss. Some genre debates happened as expected but nobody got too bent out of shape over them.

It wasn't dupes, but I screwed up over and over again. But yup. Thanks NV and thanks all. I haven't been in an 80s move for 15 years or so, so this was a well-timed kick in the pants for me. I doubt I've ever made a playlist from a draft that I will actually use as much as the one coming. I'm also going to dig around to see if spotify can handle an early 80s mostly OC punk list that will bring back memories of... pure craziness.

Right click on the playlist name in the left column. In the web client, choose "Copy Spotify URL" from the drop down. If you're using the Windows app, the comparable option is called "Copy HTTP Link"

If we want more discussion we just need to put all the playlists in a poll and have the FBG general populace vote on their favorite lists. I am sure plenty of debate will ensue.

This thread has been near the top of the board for two weeks. If anybody not in the draft wants to chime in, they're welcome to do it here.

/nod is said poster anti 80's or something?
Main point is that asking for feedback only invites trolls, and it winds up undoing a lot of the good we've done here.

I think we have tried, and it never ends well. people not in the drafts dont seem to get what we are doing, and it seems to break down into "these lists are crap because you drafted 400 songs and X-band wasn't drafted??" they think its supposed to be more of a straigh"best of" list/draft.

I always think voting polls are stupid, but I never care if someone wants to do it. The only way to do one of these drafts is to try to amuse yourself. Drafting to "win" one of these things would be pretty much the most boring thing in the world.

Agreed, If anything top 3 songs by category would be interesting, but a mix is a mix is a mix. (say that 3 times fast)

plus simey and UH won them all anyway..

speaking of UH, where has he been during these drafts?

Since my playlist won't match my draft and will be extended, it's not right to post it now with others finishing, but when can I start throwing up the overlooked single youtube style? Now okay?

This is probably safe. It's on my playlist. Could be silly funny wierd or guilty pleasure or even dance, and ahead of time, but I just can't pull TFP for it in soft rock.

Doctor whooo oo HEY

Agree with other about keeping this thread going (and not asking for FFA feedback), should be lots to keep the discussion going between listening to each others mixes, going through songs that were overlooked, etc...

The late 80s were a really weird period for UK #1 hits.

I can't wait for summer when I can crank this list up outside when the pool is full of my daughter's 14-15 year old friends. Imma make 'em dance. :)
