9/11 Museum has a gift shop (1 Viewer)

You're kidding me, right?

The 9/11 museum’s cavernous boutique offers a vast array of souvenir goods. For example: FDNY, NYPD and Port Authority Police T-shirts ($22) and caps ($19.95); earrings molded from leaves and blossoms of downtown trees ($20 to $68); cop and firefighter charms by Pandora and other jewelers ($65); “United We Stand” blankets.

There are bracelets, bowls, buttons, mugs, mousepads, magnets, key chains, flags, pins, stuffed animals, toy firetrucks, cellphone cases, tote bags, books and DVDs.

Even FDNY vests for dogs come in all sizes.
:yucky: :X

I bought an FDNY shirt, a magnet and a coffee table book when I visited last year. The place made an impact on me and I was glad for the opportunity to buy some keepsakes.

This was a big story on a local radio station today. If you want to go and buy something then go for it. If you don't want to go then good for you too. I don't understand why this bothers some people.

Oh I don't know. Exploitation of trauma. Nothing important. Drive thru, sir. Try the veal.

But, why can't people be free to make the choice for themselves? Why should other's be able to dictate where other's can visit? If you want to go then go. If you don't want to go then you are free to do that too.

So would you folks rather the government subsidize all of the costs. You sure as hell would be complaining about that too.

Agreed. We should refurbish a southern plantation too, complete with shanty zinc shacks out back, and a gift shop in the parlor on your way out with plastic manacles and contrasting t-shirts and trucker hats, one reading Field the other House, and maybe a slick stylized image of solemn black women bent over a log pile and smiling white dude behind her, *wink wink* *nudge nudge* only $19.95. You know, if you CHOOSE to buy with your freedom. Dolla, dolla bill yo.

I get what you're saying, but it doesn't feel that way when you're there. And I think a lot of people want souvenirs when they visit a place that's unique and touched them personally. They're filling that demand and hopefully making money to pay for upkeep of the place.

No, I wouldn't. In fact, I'm kinda pissed the government cheated the 9/11 survivors out of their health care.

Perhaps we can resume selling those black jockeys holding the lantern?

Mine lights up!

I was there last year and didn't see an issue with it. Wasn't the official motto to 'Never Forget'? Most of the gifts are to support and praise the police and fire and rescue groups involved.

Why is this a story now?

Yeah, I'm assuming that the proceeds are going to the firefighters, police and to help maintain/run the memorial. Buying any of that stuff just seems like a way of supporting the people that sacrificed their lives on that day and the organizations that routinely put their lives on the line.

Now if I'm wrong and somebody is making money off of this and taking the money to go party with strippers on a yacht, then my opinion changes. But I haven't seen anything to indicate that's the case.

Just went there and picked up a T-shirt that says "I went to the 9/11 museum and all I got was the crappy shirt... and an uncontrollable hatred for muslims."

People should be more outraged at the salaries of the "executives" who run the charity.
What are they?
