I bought an FDNY shirt, a magnet and a coffee table book when I visited last year. The place made an impact on me and I was glad for the opportunity to buy some keepsakes.

I get what you're saying, but it doesn't feel that way when you're there. And I think a lot of people want souvenirs when they visit a place that's unique and touched them personally. I was there last year and didn't see an issue with it. Wasn't the official motto to 'Never Forget'? Most of the gifts are to support and praise the police and fire and rescue groups involved.

Yeah, I'm assuming that the proceeds are going to the firefighters, police and to help maintain/run the memorial. Buying any of that stuff just seems like a way of supporting the people that sacrificed their lives on that day and the organizations that routinely put their lives on the line.
Now if I'm wrong and somebody is making money off of this and taking the money to go party with strippers on a yacht, then my opinion changes. But I haven't seen anything to indicate that's the case.
