A game for the truly bored (1 Viewer)

In browsing through the database, I constantly find myself looking at the career record of some all-time great and saying, "I forgot that he played for them." James Lofton played for the Rams? Chuck Foreman for the Patriots? Charlie Joiner for the Oilers? In some cases, I knew it but had forgotten. In other cases, I don't think I ever knew.

Anyway, I've noticed that for some franchises, you can build whole teams of guys like this. So here is the game. For each franchise, build a team (1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE) of players who:

1. played for that franchise;

2. only had 15% or less of their career total yardage with that franchise.

For instance, here is a pretty good Dolphins team:

Dolphins

QB: Steve Deberg

RB: Thurman Thomas

RB: Abner Haynes

WR: Cris Carter

WR: Gary Clark

TE: Eric Green

Of course I've already run a database query to generate the best team (at least in terms of total career yardage) for each franchise, so I'll stay out of it except for an occasional hint or witty remark.

Try it. It's fun.

Are we just talking about guys who had forgettable seasons with different teams at the end of their careers (e.g., Jerry Rice with the Seahawks), or are we also including players who had forgettable seasons at the beginnings of their careers with teams they aren't normally associated with (e.g., Steve Largent with the Oilers)?

In other words, should I include Yancey Thigpen on the Chargers list?

Redskins

QB Rich Gannon/Trent Green/Frank Ryan

I don't know much about Ryan, but he had some good stats with Cleveland. Tough choice here.

RB Larry Centers

RB Terry Metcalf

Nothing special here. Unfortunately, Gerald Riggs had 17% of his yards with the Skins. Am I missing someone pretty obvious?

WR Irving Fryar

WR Andre Reed

Great group at WR.

TE Frank Wycheck

Pretty solid at TE.

Chiefs would have to be one of the better ones. They have Joe Montana and Joe Horn and that's off the top of my head.

I doubt my Bengals will show much on this - probably more of an exporter. If this were defense, it'd be a different story.

Let's see Arizona Cardinals have

Boomer Esiason

Edge James and Emmitt Smith

Seattle Seahawks should field a good team:

QB Warren Moon

RB Franco Harris

RB Lawrence Mccutcheon

WR Jerry Rice

My memory fails me in filling in the rest of the team.

Anyone help out?

Id

Not sure if this has any legs, but the Falcons had:

Brett Farve

now have Joe Horn

Joe Washington

working on more / improvements for them....

White Shoes Johnson also qualifies as a receiver here-QG

Raiders have Dickerson too - and Roger Craig.

The Eagles have Art Monk and James Lofton and Mike Ditka too

And of course the Niners had OJ

I don't think Thigpen would be good enough to crack the Chargers' lineup anyway, but include whoever you want. It's just for fun.

You forgot Eric Metcalf. Other than that, I think you've got it covered.

Jim Hart would also work at QB. Calvin Hill would be a good RB.

Here's what I can do with the Falcons (thanks, dgreen for the help)

QB Brett Farve -- 59274

WR Joe Horn -- 8561

WR Drew Hill -- 9850

RB Joe Washington -- 8252

RB Eric Dickerson -- 15396

TE Keith Krepfle -- 1895

Total Yards: 103,228

Don't forget Jim Everett. Almost 35,000 yds and 203 TDs. He would knock one of the back ups off.

Moon, Franco, and Rice combine for 84.340 by themselves for Seattle. Not sure they have much else, though.

Ahman Green instead of Mccutcheon methinks.-QG
Working on the math now. Also WR Harold Jackson was over 10K yards.
Moon and Harris as current HOFers and Rice as the future lock and Jackson over 10k yards would match Doug's earlier comment about a particular team.

Seattle Seahawks

Warren Moon 51061

Franco Harris -- 14407

Ahman Green 11201

Jerry Rice -- 23540

Harold Jackson 10553

Pete Metzelaars 3686

Marcus Pollard -- 4007

114,769 Total Yards

Pretty sure you got the RBs right. Another WR that comes close but Misses is Sean Dawkins with ~6300 career rec yards. best TE I could find was Greg Delong with 257 yards?
