it hasn't been 'proven' yet but i'm pretty sure ARod yelled "I got it" or something to that effect in the top of the Ninth which forced the Jays infield to part like the red-sea away from the ball

kids do this is little league.

never saw it in a professional game

how about the play where the catcher fakes the throw to second and the second baseman pretends it flies over his head which makes the runner believe he can easily get to third

is that Bush League or only Bush League cause ARod did it?

All just part of the game. Same as stealing signs and bunting to break up a no hitter.
Maybe-although either of those actions is pretty much considered weasly. But the Jays went nuts after the play and stayed in the dugout after the game staring at ARod. Seems to indicate they don't view ARod's action as "just part of the game."

I'd file under an unlisted polling option, gamesmanship. Not quite bush, not quite legit, but probably an unwritten rule. Or at least I understand it to be unwritten, my roomate swears its on the books somewhere.

All i know is when some tool yelled that at one the female 2b man on his pop up in a co-ed intramural game my teamates and I called him a duece and as pitcher if the leauge was not a under-hand softball league and if i would not have been kicked out of all intramural sports I would have plunked him when he came up next.

If A-ROD or any other MLB player yells "i got it" as a base runner like a poster above said, it shows poor sportsmanship. Didn't A-ROD try to slap the ball out of the 1st basemans hand a year or two ago?

Oh gimme a break, he didn't even yell "I GOT IT". They just showed it on sportscenter and all he yelled was "AHH", or something quick and short. Basically scared the crap out of some dude named Joey McDonald and they all got upset about it. Happens all the time. Get over it Jays.

I was just wondering the meaning of "Bush League", because I always thought it meant different things from different people. Here's what wiki had to say:

Bush league

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bush league is a general term used to describe an action or thing as being amateur, inferior or crude. In a literal sense, it refers to a low quality minor-league in baseball not associated with any of the major league teams. The term originated from the state of minor-league fields that often were ringed with shrubs and bushes.

* In the 2004 ALCS, Curt Schilling called a play where Alex Rodriguez slapped the ball out of an opposing player's (Bronson Arroyo) glove "bush league".

* In 2006, A.J. Pierzynski and Craig Monroe bumped at home plate after a Monroe Grand Slam. Apparently, the two initally considered the contact accidental. Later, Monroe is said to have changed his story, accusing Pierzynski of purpo sly bumping. Pierzynski referred to this change of tune as "kind of bush".

* A 2005 college football game between Notre Dame and USC was said to have ended in a "bush league play" when running back Reggie Bush pushed quarterback Matt Leinart across the goal line to win the game, a technically illegal action.

* The term was also used at the end of the 2005 NFL season to describe the race for the worst record in the NFL in order to obtain the top piI ck in the NFL Draft, which had been expected to be Reggie Bush.

* The term was also used in the first round of the 2006 NBA playoffs by Raja Bell. Bell said he was talking to a referee about Kobe Bryant's wayward elbows when Laker coach Phil Jackson told him he deserved it, using an expletive to further the point. "I thought that was kind of bush league from such a good coach," Bell said.

Often, however, the term is applied beyond sports.

* The phrase was also used in the movie Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy with Will Ferrell. He says, "That's Bush, Bush League." After remarking on how the makeup artist failed to conceal the bags underneath his eyes, also because she made a derogatory comment to him after he complains.

* The phrase was also used in the movie Kiss the Girls by Morgan Freeman's character Alex Cross. He says ,"This is bush league, amateur" to Kate McTiernan (Ashley Judd) in discussing a criminal case.

* The phrase appeared in the movie The Big Lebowski by John Turturro's character, Jesus Quintana, a rival bowler. In reference to Walter's refusal to play against Jesus' team the following Saturday, citing 'Shomer Shabbos', Jesus claimed that they were pulling some "bush league psych-out stuff".

* The phrase was used in Seinfeld by Kramer in the episode "The Seven". Kramer uses the phrase in relation to a sandwich he made at Jerry's, which he took one bite from and left on Jerry's counter. He commented that it was "Bush League" due to the lack of dijon mustard in it, as Jerry had no dijon mustard in his fridge.

* The phrase was used in the "### Pennies" sketch of the episode "Power Marketing" of Comedy Central's Upright Citizens Brigade. Two businessmen are golfing together, and one asks the other how he managed to become so successful. After being told basic things like a "firm handshake", the man responds that those sorts of things are "Bush League", and asks for something more cutting edge.

* This phrase was used in the episode "Hell House" of the television series Supernatural. Dean Winchester refers to Sam Winchester's prank of turning everything on in the impala as "Bush League."

IMO it is a part of the game. But from my eyes, the guys that scream "Noonan" in any league are Bush Leaguers. It's a stupid, underhanded trick that rarely ever works and makes the guys who do it look silly and unsportsmanlike.

Instead of yelling at the infielders on a ez pop fly, how about you run it out, and next time you're up...hit a liner like you're supposed to do.

I also wanted to add that the most 'Bush League' play out there is the fake tag.

Guys should get knocked the eff out for a fake tag.

There's nothing like skinning up your shins and knees because some goomba think's it's funny to make you slide when there is no play.

I'd have my pitcher throw at the next batter for a fake slide, if it wasn't for the fact that I play slow pitch beer league and I don't think the message would get across as the meaning.

You should have a base coach or someone in the dugout telling you where the ball is. Obviously this situation doesn't happen at 1st. At 2nd, you have a good idea of where the ball is because the OF is in your field of view. 3B = 3B coach. Home = whomever's on deck/bench.Playing 3rd, I've gotten someone to slide into 3rd on an extra-base hit that they could've scred on. It's about preventing a run.

That said, A-Rod should be beaned. He should probably be beaned anyway. :pickle:

What in the world did you just try to say?

I'm a 3B on my over30 team and I hear all kinds of crap...but it's usually from the dugout and not right behind me. Oh, and it is a Bush League, so it's kinda expected. ARod is not taking the "high road" there.

Part of game, period.
It's part of major league baseball? I've never heard of an opposing player on the base paths yelling out at one of the fielders to distract them or to dupe them by calling for the ball. All I keep reading here is "happens all the time" - link?

Part of the game. I assume this has happened more than once. All that being said he deserves to be plunked for it.

Stealing signs, giving locations, faking balk calls, dekeing the runners are all part of the game. But you will get nailed if you did some of them. Thats just the consequences.

Watch closely and you can see that he says "mine".

I voted bush league. Yes, there are countless other examples of players using deceptive tactics to distract or trick the other team. Admittedly, like in all other sports, there is no across the board consistency. In hockey, taking a shot even a nanosecond after the whistle will get you crosschecked from behind - a bit ridiculous considering all the other stuff that goes on on the ice, but it's one of those "unwritten rules". All sports have them. Yelling "mine" is something you just don't do in MLB. I am sure that to a man the Yankees are cringing over this. Nobody is patting A-Rod on the back saying "way to go, great play." It reeks of desperation, it's embarrassing, I'm sure Torre is horrified.

100% bush league, I wish the teams were playing again tonight so A-Rod would get what he has coming.

:lmao:

Reminds me of the time Kent Hrbek pushed Gant off of 1st base and then tagged him out.....in the World Series. :lmao:

I agree with the guy that said the only thing wrong here is Howie Clark falling for it.

It's kind of bush league but who cares? It's not against the rules. In my book it's clever gamesmanship and absolutely 100% hysterical.

And if it were any other player than ARod, it would be seen as shrewd and a smart tactic. Johnny Bench was on TV saying this kind of thing happens ALL THE TIME in baseball and has happened for years.

Part of the game.

:bag: If Marco Scutaro had done this during a west coast late game against the Angels no one would even know it. Love the over-reacting here.

Then why were the Blue Jays so pissed? Why did they all sit in the dugout staring down A-Rod after the game was over?? :lmao: Just because it was A-Rod? :lmao:

In the D backs game yesterday Moyer was was giving instructions about where a foul pop up was and yelling that his third baseman had room to get it. It was an excellent play and showed lots of teamwork. The guy caught the ball. When all this was going on the D back players never tried to distract him. I will admit I was thinking why doesnt someone yell "LOOK OUT FOR THE WALL" and try to freak the guy out.

People calling this bush league have never played baseball.
LOOK AT ME I PLAYED COLLEGE BASEBALL AND HAVE A BASEBALL PLAYER AS MY AVATAR

:lmao: People calling this bush league just hate Arod & the Yankees. I hate them as much as the next guy but this is just a part of baseball.

No different then the hidden ball trick.

Or a catcher incorrectly telling a batter the next pitch

Should the "swing batter batter swiiiiing" chants be outlawed too?

Well, duh. Of course the team that it was pulled on is going to be pissed. They can't just sit there after one of their players is publicly humiliated with a little league play.

Fake tags are illegal in every slow pitch softball league I've ever played in. The ump (if he sees it) can actually award the baserunner the next base on a fake tag.Out of shape 30-somethings sliding into a base at full speed is a recipe for injury and should be avoided unless necessary.

It's Bush league for the simple reason that these guys call off each other to prevent horrible collisions (see Freel, Ryan the other day). If you can't trust that the guy yelling "MINE" is actually on your team, there will be a lot more collisions like that.

Who said anything should be outlawed? It's a runner's job to pay attention where the ball is.

Only a complete moron would trust the catcher when he tells him a pitch (and most MLB players I've heard asked about this issue over the past 24 hours says that catchers talking during a AB doesn't happen anyway)

It's not a fielder's job to discern who in the middle of a player if the voice who just said "Mine!" is his teammate or some baserunner being an #######. Everyone who starts playing baseball from the age of 7 learns that if someone calls for it, you back off.

No, I don't think it should be "outlawed" - I think it's poor sportsmanship, that's all.

You seem to think that by calling it "little league" it makes it negative. By little league I mean inexperienced and the only negative here is Clark being dumb enough to give up on the play and not know where the SS is. Who the hell did he think had all of a sudden shown up to make the play? Talk about not having your head in the game.

Let the Rules be your guide. Clearly bush league, and clearly against the rules

MLB Official Rules

Official Rules: 2.00 Definition of Terms

INTERFERENCE

(a) Offensive interference is an act by the team at bat which interferes with, obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play. If the umpire declares the batter, batter- runner, or a runner out for interference, all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise provided by these rules.

Meh....by those rules breaking up a double play is interference but we all know it isn't.
Yes, if you go out of your way (read: basepath) to break up the DP, absolutely it is interferenceA better example would be...say the ump is a ballbreaker for touching the bag at second on DPs. If the relay does not touch second, he calls out 'Off The Bag!'. If the guy sliding into second were to call out 'Off The Bag!', causing the defender to hold / slow his relay throw, he would be out per the rule, same as ARod should have been

Maybe, depending on the umpire's call. If you can get your hand on the base when sliding in it won't get called but you can be a couple feet off the base path easily. In the end I don't see why this is a big deal and I 100% think it only is because it's a) the Yankees and b) A-Rod.ETA: Agreed Wilked, looks like we we're both thinking the same thing on the example.

Pretty sure "ahh" isn't going to get Howie Clark to bail out like he did."It's not a fielder's job to discern who in the middle of a player if the voice who just said "Mine!" is his teammate or some baserunner being an #######. I pretty much agree with this. Being way over played because of the A-Rod/NY angle.

Also, for those that say this kind of stuff happens all the time--why don't we hear about more then? IMHO, if this stuff is legal (according to the rule quote posted earlier, maybe it's not) or illegal, but rarely gets called, why doesn't everyone just do it? You've got very little to lose and it is simple to execute.
