Adam Schefter Speculation on Culpepper (1 Viewer)

Obviously no link.

Local radio KFAN PA and Dubay just had Adam Schefter on and he said he's hearing Dolphins or Saints as places for Daunte to end up.

Saints?

He seems to think we could hear confirmation at any time today.

All I know..

Come 11:01pm local Time tonight.

Between this note and the Brees rumor, the Saints obviously believe that a veteran QB is in thier best interests and/or none of the three rookie QBs. assuming they are successful in getting the job done in acquiring a QB, this totally changes the way to look at the top of the draft board.

Hmm other reports say Raiders and Fins, I havent heard much about the Saints seeking CPep. Saints seem to be entering the Brees sweepstakes too

All due respect, I think you are being remiss to post this without mentioning exactly how Schefter phrased his Saints speculation. When PA asked him to speculate where Daunte might land, he went overboard conditioning his response "This is a guess... I can't emphasize enough this is a guess, but having clearly emphasized this is just a guess, I think he could end up with the Saints."

Good point, I'm listening at work. Obviously I didn't hear it word for word. Thanks for pointing that out.

*Edited to add, responding to Big Jim whose quote didn't show up.

I think Casserly is right in that this year is different than most and the top 3 hold alot of value. Maybe they trade value is just too much to ignore when rebuilding

Culpepper and 1.17 for 1.02? Then the Vikings take Leinart or Young or look to move up to #1 for Bush? Or, they trade back down a little for Cutler?
Eh, 1.17 and Culpepper for 1.02 means that you're valuing Culpepper at about a 1.06. More realistic is 1.17, Culpepper, and 2.17 (or next year's 1.??)

I don't know if they'll end up with Brees, but I love this thinking. Why wait 3 years for a QB to possibly develop, when you can get a proven product??Deuce, Stallworth are in the prime of their careers. Horn isn't getting any younger either. Getting Brees and drafting Ferguson would be a great offseason for the Saints.

Any chance the Saints would send McAllister for Culpepper straight up??

I don't think the Vikings would be interested in McAllister myself. Big contract like Culpepper, but productive RB's are a lot easier to find. In dealing Culpepper, I believe they're looking more to gain financial freedom than gaining a player.

I think it's between the Raiders and Dolphins.

I don't think that is the obvious inference.I think more likely is that they can get a better pair of players if they get a QB in free agency and use their pick on a Brick/Hawk/Davis, than they can using the pick on a QB and trying to get a LT/LB/TE/etc out of free agency who is as good as those guys are likely to be.

I think any team that trades for Culpepper will be giving up a 2007 conditional pick(s) that will depend on how much Culpepper plays due to the seriousness of his knee injury. I don't see teams giving up 2006 picks given his current health status.

Pat Kirwan, a senior analyst for NFL.com and Sirius Radio, said because of Culpepper's uncertain physical status, any trade likely will involve future conditional draft choices."This would be a sliding scale that I've run past a few general managers that are not in the market for Culpepper," Kirwan said. "The draft picks are for 2007. If you trade for the guy and he never plays, the compensation is zero. If he plays eight or less games, the compensation is a second-round pick. If he plays nine or more games, the compensation is a first-round pick. If he throws for 3,000 yards, then it's a first and a third. And if he makes the Pro Bowl next year, it's two first-round picks. With something like that, the risk is all off and everybody can take a wait-and-see approach as far as how much of Daunte Culpepper is left physically when he returns."

Not convinced we are really in disagreement. My statement is poorly worded (fragment), but veteran QB/rookie position player > rookie Qb/veteran position player does not appear any different than best interest to get a veteran versus drafting any of the rookie Qbs.

Im hearing that a deal between the raiders and the vikings is close to being finalized, it just that the raiders are hesitent to give up Doug Gabriel who they believe is a very underated player. The raiders offered ronald curry but the vikes rejected it. here how the deal breaks down

if finalized.

TO OAKLAND: Daunte + 6th rounder

TO MINNY : Doug gabriel + 3rd rounder :excited:

My bad. Now that I read it again I see I misread what you were saying. Somehow I glossed over the assuming they get a QB in free agency part and thought you meant the Saints don't have interest in Leinart/Young.

We already hosed 'em on the Moss deal, so this is not out of the realm of possibility. :banned:

That must be a conditional 3rd rounder. Also, I thought there was some kind of bidding war going on between the Dolphins and Raiders. If this is the upgraded offer, what kind of pile of crap were they previously offering?

More speculation, this time from PFT citing a "league source":

POSTED 5:56 p.m. EST, March 10, 2006RAIDERS NOT IN THE HUNT FOR CULPEPPERA league source tells us that, despite increasing reports and speculation that the Vikings are poised to ship quarterback Daunte Culpepper to the Oakland Raiders, the Raiders are not in the hunt for Culpepper. Although it's believed that the Raiders made an inquiry at some point after word of the Vikings' initial efforts to trade Culpepper came to light, the Raiders have not made an offer and are not among the "finalists" to land the three-time Pro Bowler with the three torn knee ligaments. At this point, it's not entirely clear who the candidates are. Obvious possibilities are any team with a potential need at the starting quarterback position -- the Dolphins, the Jets, the Ravens, the Cowboys, the Lions, the Saints, the Rams, and the Cardinals. Our money is still on the Rams, with Culpepper being shipped in St. Louis for current starter Marc Bulger, and maybe a pick or two.
This is such a great time of year. Everyone is guessing every player is going everywhere. I love it.

Why is it always the Vikings who do the stupidest things on the face of this earth?

1. Herschel Walker

2. Draftgate 1

3. Draftgate 2

4. Daunte for a bag of popcorn.

5. Naming Mike Tice as head coach

RAIDERS NOT IN THE HUNT FOR CULPEPPER

Clayton was just on ESPN saying the Raiders are still the leading candidate, so I guess it all depends on who you believe.

You forgot:5. Naming Mike Tice head coach. If Daunte doesn't want to be here though, I'd settle for a bag of popcorn over doing what the Eagles did last year (heck, the new CBA wouldn't even LET us do that). Also, I'm sure if the Raiders offered the Eagles Gabriel/Curry and a 3rd for T.O. and a 6th, the Eagles would be calling the league office to confirm the deal so fast that your head would spin.I'm not trying to compare Daunte to T.O., as T.O. is in his own universe, a la Dennis Rodman! I'm just saying that if he wants out of town pronto, Curry/Gabriel and a 3rd isn't nearly as bad as an outright release and subsequent cap hit.

Good deal for Oakland. I love Gabriel though. Agree it would be yet another 'good but not great' WR in Minny.

As far as N.O. and Brees, I think N.O. is correct in doing this, as I have always thought that MAYBE Leinart is a 1st round QB this year. This is the weakest class of QBs I can remember and because of that the top 3 or so are being pushed WAY up. Brees and Mario or Davis or Brick would be sweet for them!
