Advice on buying used car in this market (1 Viewer)

Looking to buy used car for 16 year old. He would like a jeep but probably in market for 2017 or newer civic or 2020 Sentra.

Looking for advice on process. Carmax or other? Dealer? Independent dealer? Private?

Is cop worth it?

Thanks

CPO - Certified Pre-Owned "can" be worth it but you need to see what comes with the CPO. For example, I once bought a CPO Toyota Tacoma and it came with a set of brand-new tires, all fluids and filters were changed, an inspection with a detailed list of everything done and the factory warranty was extended out by a couple of years and 24k miles (going from old man memory here.) I've seen other cars labeled as "CPO" yet the tires wore worn, I could clearly see the oil was not changed, no additional warranty was given, etc. it was just cleaned up, shoved out onto the lot and they slapped a "CPO" sticker on it.

Insofar as the vehicle goes, honestly, when our son turned 16, I bought my wife a new Honda Pilot and our son got her car which is a 2008 Honda Accord V6 EX-L and at the time it had like 135k miles on it. In the 4 years since, he's put about another 20k miles on it, it's been (overall) perfect with a few issues here and there that were relatively inexpensive to fix.

I absolutely love Honda Civic's and Accord's, but you used to get dinged from automobile insurance companies for high rates of theft, I'm not sure if that's still true or not? Adding our son to our policy effectively doubled our insurance rates. He's a very safe driver, his grades are very good, he's gotten no tickets nor accidents it's just because of his age. . . so that's pretty awesome.

If my son's Accord disappeared tomorrow, I think I would replace it with a gently used V6 Camry or Avalon only because I'd like to see him in a larger car, I like the bullet proof reliability and ease of maintenance of a traditional V6 Toyota (4 cylinder is fine but I simply prefer the V6) and also since he doesn't drive aggressively and he doesn't drive very many miles plus I've asked him - he said Corolla/Camry/Avalon/Civic or another Accord.

About ready to swallow that insurance pill adding my daughter. Talked to our insurance last summer and it will more than double our policy and that's just for collision. Do you have his under comprehensive/full?

Care sharing who you insure with? Might be time to make a change or at least shop it again. Had to go with Allstate to get the umbrella policy for wife's daycare, but since that is done...

Sorry OP no real advice. I usually shop Autotrader so I can get a feel for approximate pricing before hitting a car lot. Daughter is getting a hand me down from a relative who passed. Every 16 year old wants a 20+ year old rag top Buick LeSabre right?!?

Insurance was brutal when my daughter turned 16. I had the same insurance company for 25 years, changed 2x over the past 4. It doubled, and then threatened to double again (hence the 2nd change).

I'd look at used Nissan Leafs. If income under $150k, up to a $4K rebate (but you have to buy from a dealership). No gas costs.

I highly recommend checking out a short list of models in advance, choosing one to target, then watching everywhere for deals on that specific model. Once you know which model and year you're targeting, you could just stay on the lookout for that everywhere...Carmax, autotrader, carvana, etc.

Since you asked about Carmax...not the absolute cheapest option but I've bought two from them. Both in great condition and ran forever. I liked the overall experience and the selection (one car was delivered from KC to Nashville). It's also a great place to just go SEE the cars, check out how the interior feels, and test drive several to determine which one you want to focus on.

Love the Carmax experience.

Been a few years but IIRC autotrader had the almost exact value of cars pinned down.

So I would figure out exactly what trim/engine/model for the car(s) I want and then I know what price looks good when shopping on Carmax’s website.

That's what I did. I had to trade in a BMW lease and was looking a buying a Honda CR-V. Then one day, one popped up for their Touring models that was like $5K cheaper than a new models of lower trims and was still in the new car model years. Apparently, someone bought it, drove it a couple months (put 2K miles on it) then traded it in to a Lexus dealer for a different car. Hopped on that real quick, still have it, no issues 4 years later. Hondas are just well put together cars.

Started looking at new cars again because I want to give my 2016 Ford Escape to my teenage driver. I'm having trouble locking in on the type of car I want.

Looking at a 2009 Hybrid Camry SE with 167k miles.

Hybrid battery is showing 72% state of chsrge.

Selling for $6.8k.

Concern is hybrid battery. would be for 16 year old son.

Thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Would it run as a normal gas car if the hybrid battery fails?

Personally would look for a non hybrid at that age of car. Battery could go at any time and it’s a several thousand dollar repair.
