Advice on starting a 32 team league (1 Viewer)

So I've got some e-mails to folks in several leagues about starting a 32 team league next year. I was wondering who out there is in one or has done one, and how successfull was it, typical rules you used, did you do IDP, etc. As expected, some of the potential owners are whining about lack of depth, etc, which I think is the point of this size league, and I fully acknowledge it isn't for everyone.

If this gets off the ground, it would need to be an e-mail draft over several weeks due to logistics involved.

Thanks for any feedback.

Settle down folks, my intention was not to solicit people for such a league, but to find out what other's experiences have been with a league of this size. If in January/February I'm short a few, I may open it up and resurrect this thread, but unitl then back off you vampires :bye:

The one time I did this, it was actually a 28-team league, otherwise teams are screwed on bye weeks. The league also had a lot of "team" positions. Basically the QB, TE, K and D positions were "team" positions. So, you don't draft Daunte Culpepper, you would draft MIA QB and get whoever plays each week. With the crazy bye week schedule this year, you would probably have to go to a 26-team league so that teams could have bye week fillers. There were rules that you could only own 1 "team" position player, so that bye weeks could be covered. Obviously the waiver wire is slim, so you would want to have limited roster spots, I believe we had 10 spots; 1 QB, 3 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 D.

My 1st thought would be that the league would have to offer flexibilty. You need for there to be multiple ways to win. You mentioned IDPs, and I agree that they would be essential in your plans for flexibilty. A top defensive player will need to be on par with top offensive players in terms of the number of points they can score.

Also, you may want to consider some sort of flexible weekly lieup of starters. You mentioned lack of depth, and it will be a very real problem. Imagine that you must start a QB every week. Well, with 32 teams, every starting QB will be drafted. Now its your QBs bye week. What to do? You'll need a system where you dont HAVE to start any particular position every week.

Just some thoughts for you to consider.

I wouldn't join a league where I could potentially have the number 32 pick as my first pick. The disparity between the people who pick first and the people who pick last would be huge. It's bad enough in 16 team leagues.

i'm in a 32-team league and love it. very competitive. requires a lot of knowledge and luck. definitely start to learn IDPs. complete redraft. scoring is unique. QBs very valuable. lots of info to share here.

divisions are broken down like in the NFL. same number of playoff teams. play your division rivals twice each season.

we start...

QB

RB

WR

WR

WR/TE

TE

Team K

DL

DL

LB

LB

LB

DB

DB

DL/DB

i am glad i don't have to manage it though. lots of work. long online draft that starts well before the season. $100 for WW blind bidding.

FWIW i had pick 25 of 32.

went...

Palmer (eh)

Kevin Jones (yea)

Glenn

Bryant

S Parker

Vrabel

sitting at 4-2, pending tonight. 1st in division.

guy at pick 32...

dom davis (ouch)

gates

clayton

clayton

hartwell

d clark

I'm also in a couple of 32 team leagues with two conferences. Each conference was a player pool, so in theory you can face a team that has the exact same players you do. Is that the type of 32 team league you're talking about?

I did one once where there was a rule to entice folks to trade in preseason. Huge roster cutdown I think. I really think it would have bored me without that rule.

Large league had starting FBs.

Also had compensatory picks. They used a scale. Round 1=10 pts round 10=1pt. Lowest score each week got a point. They could use that for an extra 5th and 7th round pick or just a 3rd...their choice how to split up the points.

Rules were very well thought out and I thoroughly enjoyed it. IMO They don't need to be creative like above but you'd better have every loophole coverred "and then some". 32 people looking for a loophole will give the commish a heartattack if you don't.

One of the most important things, plan out in advance how to replace owners. That many people means multiple person turnover guaranteed, and a plan must be in place before the first one drops out.

I was involved in one with Terry Cannon one year. Died after only a single year. Way too much turnover. 32 teams is tough to manage. Unless you have very solid plans for replacement owners each year you're screwed.

I was in one that began with people from FBG's. The commish ended the league this year because it was just too much work for him. It was pretty fun, though it didn't use IDP's (which I would suggest). Just make the top IDP's worth as much as the top RB's and you can have a successful league.

I will PM the rules to my 32 team IDP league. 5rings is in it and its a great format. Each team is an NFL team (like 32 homers above) and you play the same schedule as your NFL team (including byes). If your QB or K is on a bye during one of your games you get their average for the past few games ...

In a "balls out" 32 team league w/ no player repeats, there is a huge scarcity of players ...

I also know from another 32 team league if you allow repeats of players, there are problems in MFL incorporating a salary cap, as each player may only have one salary ...

Agreed, think this would need to be an auction league for sure.
As I mentioned above, MFL will not work with an auction if you have player repeats because it can only handle one "salary" per player ...Of course, the true fun of a 32 team league is to not allow repeats and make people dive deep into the player pool ...

Here are what rosters look like in a 32 team IDP league:

Home Field Advantage

As you can see, a lot of teams have a problem fielding viable receivers. If you give points for returns and special teams tackles (this league does not, a flaw IMO) it gives you more viable candidates ...

Also, I like using Team QBs and kickers, so people cannot filch backups for at least those positions ...
