Advise for a newb? D: (1 Viewer)

I hate using that word, but it's what I'm feeling like lately. I've always thought of myself as a more defensive than an offensive person when it comes to the world of football, but I've never even heard of some of the elite IDPs. Mike Peterson? Charles Grant?

All I know is that practice makes better, so I just joined a defensive only league. No RBs, QBs, WRs, TEs, or KPs, just defensive positions. This is the roster positions available:

3 DB

3 LB/DL Flex

3 DB/DL/LB Flex

1 DEF

3 Bench

Any advise? I'd prefer advise on what to do with the flex's, but like I said, any advise is much appreciated.

[DEF]Interception (2)

[ALL]Safety (2)

[ALL]Touchdown (6)

That's a bunch of flex positions.

I'd put that scoring system into a fake MFL league and see what comes out as good relative value. My guess is that you'll find that LB will be king, but consistent tackling corners who get picks will be overvalued relative to solid but not spectacular linebackers and safeties (no assisted tackles).

I wouldn't draft a DL. I'd probably draft 4 DBs and 8 LBs. Like I said in the other post, they don't differentiate LBs from DLs. You'll also find nice DBs on waivers all year, so I'd consider drafting only three, and stocking up on the LBs available, round after round. If you're a subscriber, you have access to great information. Even if you aren't the last of the free info on IDPs is still posted, and you can build a pretty fierce D from those rankings. Just do a little research, some things have changed since mid July.

Let's see here.

1. The Flex DL/LB is the "DL" for Yahoo. I posted flex because that's basically what it is.

2. The Flex DL/LB/DB is what it is. I can't get more than 6 LBs. 6/6 LB/DB?

3. I am a subscriber, so I'm going to be using the IDP part of the DD. ^_^

First thing I'd mention is that the Inside LBs will score the most points. I noticed that DB INT's are 5 points, but that's an awfully hard stat to project, esp since it is not indicative of quality. It's usually the great CB that the QB's stay away from..

That being said, check out Bramels article about the Tampa-2 defense Here. That's a great read.

And like Chaos Commish said, stay away from DL if possible, and Defensive Tackles at all costs. If you need linemen, amke sure they are DE's. There are some terrific defensive ends out there, but I think that 3 point sacks are going favor blitzing LB's and Safeties.. And follow the tackles. 10 tackles/game will make you forget about that sack he just missed..

I have found that it's important to understand what roles a player has on the DEF, and more importantly, how that role has changed or stayed the same compared to last year. Look at Ray Lewis' tackle totals for the past three years, then look at what defensive scheme BAL was running, and what personnel changes they made when his tackles went down last year or two (note-he only played 6 games last year, but he was complaining about the DEF scheme). Another example is Takeo Spikes and Crowell this year. Read up on Vilma too..

Another solid place to look for studs is the 3-down back thread started by nortobc

here

I owe all the folks in this forum for what I have learned the last few days..

Under that particualr scoring, I wouldn't be surprised if the top 20 scorers were all ILB's. Obvious exection, of course to that stud Bulluck..

Hope this helps, I am not an expert on any of this, but I think I'm on target..

Okay, here's my team.

LB: Mike Peterson, Lofa Tatupu, Karlos Dansby, Will Witherspoon, Andra Davis, Kawika Mitchell

DB: Ronde Barber, Gibril Wilson, Darren Sharper, Michael Lewis

DL: Jason Taylor

DEF: PIT, MIA

Don't make fun of me for having 2 defenses. My first and 10th picks were both done by auto-pilot because I didn't know I was up. D:

I don't know about these other guys' leagues but I consider every one of those players "studs". I'd double check on Dansby, I thought I saw him nicked up pretty good. I love Mitchell, but that's just me, he was all over the field last week. He might also be a lower tier guy, my IDP league goes only 2 starters deep at ILB.Now that I think about it, how did you land all those guys, that's a dream team...12 team league??
