After Earth - Will Smith's vanity project involving his son. (1 Viewer)

This had an original budget of 130m.

As of now domestic total is 54m and in foreign total is 48m.

Still on track to lose quite a bit of money for the studio. Note that boxofficemojo.com estimates that the studio receives approx 55% of the gross.

Saw the movie, I didn't like it. The only redeeming factor this movie has was the father son bond --which was really sweet--.

Most movies make back their original investment and hit a profit once DVD, PPV, TV and other subsiduaries are added together.

On the figures so far it will top out at the US box office at 56-58 million.

It will do better overseas. It has only been open for 1 week in most countries and still hasn't opened/got the box office results for week 1 in China, Japan and other Asian territories. It probably ends up with about 140 internationally, maybe less if the Asian market dumps it. Week 2 figures for the territories it did well in will be interesting eg Russia, France, South Korea and the UK.

Let's assume worse case it gets 120 internationally. We're up to approx 175 million.

Once this gets released on Blu Ray, DVD, PPV it will easily reach profit within a year or 2. After that, it's money in the bank.

A name at the box office movies (Cruise, Pitt, DiCaprio, Will Smith etc), very rarely lose money (John Carter and Battleship lost significant money, but didn't have a box office draw)

Sorry to disappoint those that want to be haters here, but this movie will be in profit within 2 years, even if it sucks balls.

Summer blockbuster movies with a billion dollar star in it aren't meant to make a profit in 2 years thanks to DVDs. Think of it more as how much it didn't earn rather than whether it breaks even. The summer opening slot is a failure if it doesn't clear the budget costs within a few weeks just on the US ticket sales alone. AE may not be in the red compared to budget, but it's disastrously short of the expected return, though I just don't have any idea why an M-Night movie would have this level of expectation.

These movies aren't made to turn a small profit on DVD sales when Wal Mart has a 2 for $20 sale. Studios don't waste the time and effort into a major film like this for a piss return.

Actually in this case it appears Smith kind of twisted Sony's arm to get them to do it. They are going to be especially unhappy.

He blew a lot of his cache on this one. Expect Will to be doing a lot of Michael Bay movies in the years to come to make up for it.

For those keeping track, this movie is now in profit.

The Chinese and other Asian countries have made it so.

It has taken in 176 million overseas so far, most in Asia with an astonishing 30 million from China in 2 weeks. It took $16 million last week there alone and more is still to come.

It defnitely tanked in the US, with a tick uner 60million, but this movie once again proves the adage that Big Box Office star movies are unsinkable thanks to the foreign box office treatment of movie stars.

Compare the publicity this movie got compared to the Jeff Bridges, Ryan Reynolds movie released this week R.I.P.D, which cost the same amount to make and took a terrible 12 million in its first week. This is a movie that will tank big time. Bridges & Reynolds are not international stars, so this movie will make about a $100 -$150 million loss.

After Earth is in profit before DVD, cable, PPV etc.

Still a gigantic flop. Nobody approved this film so they could wait 6 weeks for it to turn a profit once it got to china.

Hate it as much as you want, but the investors will make a tidy profit once all is said and done.

Not mega box office bucks, but a very tidy sum indeed within a year.

As a movie it can be considered a flop, but it's all about money.

How about the investors in R.I.P.D? They will lose almost as much as movies with a lot more publicity (Battleship, John Carter, Lone Ranger etc)

Why was RIPD so expensive?

Seems like you guys aren't including marketing and distribution in the negative costs.

from wikipedia:

The estimated worldwide marketing budget for After Earth was approximately $100 million in addition to the $135 million to produce the film

So it looks like it made a HEFTY 5 million dollar profit? Nice. Clearly the movie was a box office success because profit > 0, right? :)

100+135 = 235 = total gross according to boxofficemojo

marketing and distribution includes the theatres' cut?

because I think that's about half the gross.

According to the book The Hollywood Economist by Edward Jay Epstein, studios take in about 40 percent of the revenue from overseas release — and after expenses, they're lucky if they take in 15 percent of that number.
Domestic revenue just counts for a lot more than overseas revenue, says David Mumpower with Box Office Prophets:

Mumpower points out that Cruise's Knight and Day only made about $76 million in the U.S., against a production budget of $117 million. But since Knight and Day made $262 million overseas, chances are it will end up being profitable once home-video revenues are factored in.
But actually, the trend towards studios depending on DVD sales may have peaked already — in 2009, for the first time in a decade, theatrical box office revenue was bigger than home-video revenue, says BoxOfficeAnalysts' Stone. And this seems to be continuing into 2010. Perhaps because of piracy or the popularity of Netflix, DVD sales aren't keeping pace with ticket sales any more. Says Stone, "Studios can no longer rely on as robust an ancillary market to prop up a failure at the box office."

I think Smith's gamble on this movie was also thinking about the return on overseas markets. Even if it fails in the US, they still think they can recoup some return in said markets. But if your market is where they don't have open internet access like China with internet pirates, then you really don't have any shelf life with a stupid movie. Even then your risking Black Market street sale of DVD's. If your content is ultimately disposable, it is. Big budget movies are meant to sell screens everywhere. It also has to have value in merchandising. If it doesn't have any value in merchandising, especially in a Sci-Fi movie, then it's a giant flop. How many little Jaden dolls were in the plan? Daddy Will probably made a mint in MIB merch. If you aren't putting butts in seats, you aren't putting butts in seats. Yet if they think they can get the butts on couches market, that's a very slim return once it's pirated and then thrown into the digital recycle bin. So the only real tangible item would be in merch. Buying a Jaden doll has zero value to a Jar Jar Binks doll. If you can't sell Sci-Fi geeks - even crappy movie Sci-Fi geek - with tangible items, you flat out freakin' failed.

BTW, Will Smith and Jaden were great in The Pursuit of Happyness. I had done volunteer work at Glide Memorial many times. Being homeless in SF can happen to a lot of people. Of course that movie had the Hollywood treatment (seen a lot of location shooting there, even at Glide), but they really sold the nightmare of having to try to raise a child in that SF Tenderloin madness while homeless.
