Air Purifiers (1 Viewer)

Anyone use an air purifier system they reccomend?

I work in my basement office often and with some recent water issues down there (working on fixing those)  and some construction aftermath from a kitchen renovation above (had to cut concrete to install a new support pole and footing), the area is not optimal. Looking for something that can run on a schedule or most of the day without a huge energy commitment, and is quite enough to not annoy me while i'm working.

overall room size is about 500 sqf

Or are they BS and dont really do much to help the air quality and I'm just gonna die from "the black lung, pop"

I got a couple of the "nothing fancy" models after a recent bathroom renovation.   Our house turned into a dusty mess everything we worked.  Honestly, I don't know how much they are doing.  I replaced the filters a few days ago and they were pretty brown'ish.  That makes me think they're doing something.    One of our kids has some allergy issues and we moved one to his room.  He's been a lot better, but he's also been getting shots from the allergy clinic too.  So who knows.  They make a nice white noise too that helps at night,

If you have water issues in a basement, you might try a dehumidifier.  I picked up this one during that same bathroom reno and I was shocked at how much water it collected every night.

thx. I;ll check the one you posted out.

we have a mini-split AC system down there with a dehumidifier. It helps. But i'm more concerned with the airborne stuff like mold and dust that is floating around there with the water and reno. We had to rip all the fiberglass insulation out of the ceiling to get to pipes and I'm sure that disturbed a bunch of lingering dust and stuff. and with a basement, there is not a lot of natural ventilation there. so I'd love to scrub the air a bit before I move back down there for work.

the water issues stem from building an addition to the side of the house where we get a lot of rain water run off due to property slope. Basically built a big dam there and a basement window is right there. So I'm working on installing some drainage grates there to divert the water. But that won't help any mold potential already done there now.

I have a Honeywell HPA200 and love it. I have seasonal allergies that hit me in the spring but I starting getting hit even with the windows closed. I would wake up really congested and some nights wake up to a coughing fit in the middle of the night that would force me to take Claritin. So I realized it was probably dust related. I bought the air purifier and it was like a miracle. From the very first night, I saw an immediate improvement. I need to get another one (or two!) because I sometimes move it to the living room or basement home theater just to let it run for a couple of hours. Highly recommended but not programmable like you're looking for. I'm sure there are better ones.

Wow. That’s a monster.  How much room are you cleaning with that?  Not sure I want to spend that much but I’ll keep it in mind.
We keep it in our bedroom now.  We bought it when we lived a bit more of an open condo and it cleaning the whole space.  Pretty helpful between seasonal allergies and three dogs.

I use a 20" box fan, with a 20x20 HEPA furnace filter duct taped to the intake side.

This is actually a thing. https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2011/07/why-not-a-do-it-yourself-air-purifier/index.htm

The guy in the link has it backwards though - filter should be on the back of the fan, not the front (so it pulls the air through it, and not pushing it through).

It works really well. Black fan, black duct tape, it all fits together well... might not be 100% wife acceptable, but it doesn't look horrible either. I change the filter every 2-3 months. About $20 for the best one.

ETA: I did some marketing work for a guy who sold HEPA air purifiers, and he confirmed to me that the box fan thing is really just as effective.

Where do you leave it, in the middle of the room? Wouldn't it circulate better with the air blowing up? I like being able to leave ours close to the wall and the one I got is pretty quiet. Those box fans can be really loud.

It's in my basement office/mancave, so it's not heavily trafficked. I have it off to the side about 5' from a wall. But it does work well - I noticed a difference immediately. I would think real close to the wall would curb the effectiveness, so yes, that's a disadvantage for some room configurations.

It's not that loud - but we're all different in that respect.

Bumping this - I've been considering getting an air purifier for our bedroom.  My wife and I both have seasonal allergies.  We both tend to wake up way worse than we went to bed with regards to congestion.  I know that's somewhat normal, but I feel like it'd help if our room's air was generally cleaner.  I make sure our HVAC filters are changed every 300 hours, but I think an air purifier would be a nice added step.

Any recommendations for something for a decent sized bedroom?  (~15' x 25')

I'd ideally like something that's effective, but not crazy expensive to run/maintain.  Expensive replacement filters are out of the question, so something re-useable/washable is best - I'm not going to pay $50 every few months just to maintain the thing.

I ended up purchasing this one. I didn't hook the wifi fi up yet but that wasn't the driver...cost, size of the room cleaned and rating were.

It does not have washable filters but that was ok b/c im in a basement and figure mold and dust won't wash out so easily. I put myself on a subscription for revery 5 months and save a few bucks each on these.

overall happy with it so far. I put it on auto so it the filtration rises and falls with whatever the room quality it. When we were doing work down there and it was getting dusty, you can see it working harder. I cant say its making a direct change, but anything is better then nothing for the long term.

What made you choose that one specifically?  I'm honestly overwhelmed there are so many different ones.

price, size for the room, auto feature and the wifi was on the list but not super high—just a cool feature I could see using if I knew I'd be in my office in a few hours, I could turn it on remotely before i got there.

it got really good reviews from my research vs much more expensive units.

Don't have time to link it up for you, but we bought the Coway AP-1512HH off Amazon a little over a year ago. We love it.

Have had 2 other people go out and buy the same one after visiting our house a couple of times. It makes a noticeable difference.

We have had the AeraMax 300 in our BR for about 4 months and like it.  Handles large rooms. Very quiet. One of few certified by “asthma and allergy foundation”. Sensor detects air quality and adjust speed auto or can set speed manually.  HEPA. 4 stage filtration. Ionization. Claims it can remove air borne flu virus.

I pulled the trigger on one of these over the weekend.  Wife liked the aesthetics of it.  The reviews were really good.  SUPER quiet.  So far, it seems to be a good fit.  Last night was the 1st night we used it though...I did wake up less congested, but it takes more than 1 night to make a trend.  Looking good so far.
