Airline Lost Luggage (1 Viewer)

5 days of looking for my checked luggage Delta is not able to locate it and needs me to file lost luggage with detailed contents and estimated value.

Anyone ever experienced this and how generous are they on the value? Is this going to be pulling teeth or is it fairly smooth process? iPad or laptop in there forget about claiming because they won't give that much?

tell them you're an independent dealer or whatever, and were transporting 60 lbs. of raw, unprocessed diamonds from a diamond mine in Nigeria.

how the #### do you completely lose a piece of luggage?

I've heard very generous, but never personally experienced... I'd tell some aggressive fibs.

Hide some jewelry that you have receipts for and claim they were in there.

Happened to a buddy of mine last year. He went with inflated retail prices on everything (even though most was bought on sale) and was rewarded VERY generously with no questions asked.

eta - they also told him that if his luggage showed up in the next year, they would still send it to him (never happened) so there is a chance you'll still get both

I wish they were as generous for damaged luggage. They ripped my snowboard bag open in 2 places a few years ago. Said they'd "repair or replace," it. A few weeks later, I got my bag back with 2 big black patches on the outside (bag is grey), and no attempt at all to patch the inside liner which was cut through as well.

Overall, a nightmare experience because they contract a 3rd party to do the repairs so it's really easy for them to play the blame game.

Airlines seem to lose my luggage 90% of the time, but they always find it eventually. Never been compensated.

Although, my last flight over Christmas, I had to use a suitcase of mine that was on its last leg. Totally falling apart. Piece of crap, old, dilapidated thing. Waited at the carousel for it and it never came down. Went to the baggage complaint office and they said they damaged the bag. (They didn't. It just was a POS.) So they went to a closet filled with new suitcases and told me to pick one. So I got a brand new, and fairly nice, suitcase from them. It was like a bonus for flying them.

How much do airlines pay for lost luggage?

Most airlines have a very efficient way to handle checked luggage, and they deliver almost every luggage piece that is entrusted to them to the right destination. Nonetheless, baggage handlers do make mistakes on occasion, and some bags do not reach their owners at the end of a flight. Travelers who lose their luggage may experience significant financial loss, especially if they have valuable items in their bags, and many of them will try to claim for compensation from the airlines.

When loss of luggage occurs during air travel, it is mostly the result of airlines’ incompetent baggage handling systems. In such cases, the airlines have the responsibility to pay compensation to owners of lost luggage. The amount of compensation is dependent on a number of factors, which include the route of the flight and the contents of the luggage. Travelers who lose their luggage during a domestic flight can claim up to $3,000 per person. In the case that a luggage piece contains the belongings of two air passengers, then the maximum compensation amount will be $6,000. The liability limit for international flights is governed by airline regulations, as well as international treaties; therefore it varies greatly from case to case.

After an airline has confirmed that a certain luggage piece is lost, it will go into negotiation with its owner. The owner is required to produce a list of items that are kept in the luggage as well as the price of each item. The airline may also request him or her to show receipts for certain items on the list. After the documents are submitted to the airline, it will calculate the depreciated values of the items, and compensate the owner accordingly. If the lost bag contains a two-year-old suit that was bought at a price of $500, the airline will only pay its depreciated value, which may be only $250. Also, airlines have an extensive list of items that they do not reimburse for, and these include valuable items such as jewelry, antiques, cash, and others.

In most cases, travelers who lose their luggage during air travel do not get satisfactory compensation from airlines. One way to ensure that they will get the right amount of financial recovery is to obtain a good travel insurance policy. Most travel insurance plans provide coverage for lost luggage, and the compensation amounts are much higher than those that are offered by airlines. Travel insurance providers also allow travelers to get a coverage upgrade if they are planning to keep valuable items in their luggage.

i have had two lost bags in my life. Once was a snowboard so it was the replacement cost of the board and bag - pretty strait forward. The second was a large travel bag with three suits packed away. This was a royal PIA. At the time there was a cap and they wanted receipts for everything. Who keeps a receipt for suit longer than a month. We went back and forth but they ended up giving me the full cap amount - i want to say it was $1,750. At the time that easily covered my $250 Calvin Klein suits. Today, it would not scratch the surface of my Hugo/Armani suits. Good luck and hold your ground.

It's amazing how super libertarian guy needs to talk about his political philosophy in every thread no matter what the topic is. SUPER INTERESTING.

I haven't checked a bag since 911.
still on the no-fly list?
Ha, no, I've flown plenty.

But why would I voluntarily turn my property over to the fedgoons when they can go through it and steal some of it with impunity?
You should change your user name to Jack :tinfoilhat: Ridiculousness
You don't think the TSA steals stuff from luggage?

Packing light so you don't have to check a bag is not ridiculous, it's just a smart thing to do. For multiple reasons, including potential theft.

Not true at all. Plenty of threads where it's not germane.

Of course, there are plenty of threads where it is appropriate.

As for this thread, I can't wait to hear from others how great the TSA is and how it keeps us safe and how many terrorists they've caught, etc.

i wish more people would check bags, especially on southwest where its free. would make unloading the plane easier when you dont have to deal with every jerkoff unloading their entire wardrobe from the overhead compartments.

Why do you think people would engage you in some kind of discussion on the value of the TSA in a thread about some dude's lost luggage? Not everyone is so narrowly focused and insecure that they need to reaffirm their personal philosophy to everyone at every opportunity.

So basically ask for the maximum and over inflate every thing knowing they are going to negotiate it down. So then I'll include the new MacBook air I bought couple months ago along with some items I know I have receipts for. Thanks for the tips.

Can't imagine too may other jobs I'd like to have less and yeah TSA can suck pretty bad. But, being worried about them stealing your clothes out of checked bag is a really stupid thing to be worried about.

Either that or everyone pitch in for a giant slingshot and launch his dumb ### into space.

Fly Delta every week and I, seriously, check my bag every time. I got sick of the 40 minute circle jerk of waiting for my "gate checked" bag in a line of dildo's in a 4 degree walkway.

I had a 4 year streak going, but Delta lost mine about 3 months ago during some flight jumping to get me home. They thought they found in in LaGuardia for about a day, then nope.

I didn't go with the rip them off plan, just put down what was exactly in my bag at the retail cost to replace them, and added a 10% hassle fee to each. They paid without any hesitation with no negotiation and gave me a decent amount of points. HIGHLY encourage going with the "hey, YOU didn't lose it and these things happen" tone. THe "F U, I"m gunna burn you to the ground" strat will get you no where.

Funny thing is, about 10 days after I got the check, I came home to my original bag on the doorstep, no notification or anything.

Curious, what was the amount of the check?

If you're going to game it, I think you should find some other ways besides the Air. What percentage of people check a laptop for it to get banged around with all the other suitcases and on the carousels, much less a super thin one that would easily fit in any carry on? 1%? Just seems like an obvious red flag for them to give you #### over everything when according to others, they're pretty generous in the first place.

Adding a bit to the real cost? Ok I can see that I guess. Lying about the content? You are a thief IMO.
I'm adding the content because I have the receipt and I know they are going to negotiate me down in price according to previous people that have gone thru this. It isn't like I'm adding 4k worth or materials to the bag. But needing the receipt is what will cause all the issues since I don't have receipts for all my items.

I appreciate your feedback as I'm sure you are straight as an arrow and never stretched anything.

Lost bag sucks.

What did you actually have in there?
Yeah it sucks, not not real huge issue. Nothing where I'm losing sleep. Contents were three under armour polo, one Nike polo two dress pants, two blue jeans, etc. toiletries and three computer modules for work. Luggage was samsonite carry on with spinners.

Yes I know why did you check the bag if it was a carry on, because I hate dicking around finding over head space.

I'd estimate the value of the bag/contents around $750 - $850. If I was confident they would be fair with me I'd just come in with that but I don't want them to say well you don't have receipts for your clothing so we are only giving you $250 - $300.

Edit: prescription eye glasses and spare contacts. $500. So estimate around $1250 - $1350.

So did you get a check or did they find your luggage?

Yes from memory it was about 2 or 3 days after I posted this that they finally confirmed location and had it delivered back to my house.  Frustrating part is I just started vacation, so I didn't have any clothes.  I could of asked for them to deliver it to where we were vacationing, but I didn't have a lot of confidence in Delta at that point.

I already went out and bought everything for the week because it took so many days just to locate it.  Not the end of the world, but pain.  I'm sure I could have asked for some compensation for that, but it wasn't worth the time and energy.

When I arrived home I was expecting the back to be destroyed, which would explain why it took so long to recover, but it was actually in good shape.  No idea why it took so long.
