Airline/Travel - Gift Ideas needed (1 Viewer)

My mother is retiring in early May and would like to get her (and husband) a "surprise!" travel gift.

They don't typically travel much so don't want to send them on an elaborate event, but would love to do something where they are able to take a trip for 4 days (long weekend)....I think they would definitely go somewhere, but they need a bit of a push.

Outside of gift cards for a specific airline which would allow them to pick a place, etc., I don't want to dictate when/where they go, but definitely want to spur them into action, etc.

Is the airline gift card the best option for a trip? Any other alternatives for travel?

thank you!

Is there some place they've always wanted to go? Like NYC, Boston, San Fran, Miami, Toronto?

Maybe you could tell them that you are paying for a long weekend to one of those spots. Pressure them to give you a weekend, and then book the flights and hotels for them.

If you only want a long weekend, it should be in the states or Mexico or Canada. But that would be a pretty easy way to "force" them to do it.

Maybe make them a car travel gift basket?  You could fill it with car chargers, travel mugs, AAA memberships, Kindle/podcast stuff, etc etc.

Instead of airline, you could go the hotel route -- like a Marriott gift card.  Locks them in Marriott properties, but decent variety now that they have Starwood too.

Was there a gift card I could buy that could be used for any airlines? A voucher/gift-card essentially for SW, American, United, etc.?

I know I could just buy a VISA gift card, but this would force them to travel (they don't waste gift cards).

Let me know if there's one voucher that would be accepted by multiple airlines.

Thank you!

Actually, it now looks like I can "buy miles".

A trip from the Chicago land area to Nashville, TN (which is what I would like to purchase) is around 818 miles according to a website I'm viewing.

How many miles would I need to buy for 2 people to pay for this?

I was finding estimates for travel to be about $325 per ticket (so about $650 total) for 2 round trip tickets, but not sure how to translate that into this site since it comes off to much less (2,000 miles is 94.00)....So, something is not making sense here and it's probably me!
