Al Wilson being shopped per Shefter (1 Viewer)

There were earlier reports of trade talks to the Redskins, but Washington opted to sign London.

http://www.nfl.com/nflnetwork/story/10080863 talks with NYG, PHI, DET

Al Wilson has a monster contract this year, he's never produced Ray Lewis #s. I figured they would just rework his deal, but these trade rumors are persistent. He might be a cap casualty if not traded.

Go get DJ while you can

I heard and read it could be Nate Webster who actually replaced Wilson in the 49er game last year at the end of the season. I dont think they have the money to bring in Mitchell. Webster I think could be a huge sleeper if Wilson gets traded.

And so the crazy off-season continues. Lots of ramifications if this comes to pass.

Schefter is speculating that DJ Williams would move to the middle if Wilson is moved. If that happens, in a Jim Bates defense, DJ Williams is a monstrous IDP option. Potentially top five and almost certainly a LB1. Williams can hit, run, and cover. The kicker here is that there's really nobody to play on the strong side other than DJ on the roster so it's a little difficult to buy into that speculation. Nate Webster is only an okay fit. He can take on blockers but isn't good enough in coverage on early downs. Still, the MLB position is the main LB position in this scheme so it doesn't make much sense to not move your best playmaker there. Since it's Schefter reporting it, though, Williams has to get the bump. In the event Wilson moves and Webster gets the call, Williams still gets the bump as he'll assuredly get all the nickel snaps as was rumored he might last week when that issue came up with the new coaching staff. And Webster would have the same, somewhat limited two down value Wilson may have fallen into.

For the Giants, I saw some speculation in the Shark Pool that they may use this as an impetus to move into a 3-4. With new DC and Jim Johnson disciple Steve Pagnuolo and the current DL personnel, there's no way that's happening. Which means either Wilson or Antonio Pierce would move into an OLB role. I originally thought that Pierce would be the likely WLB in that scenario, but the beat writer for the Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that Wilson would be the WLB, apparently with a solid source. Wilson's value would be marginally better than what it would've been in Denver in that role, Pierce's the same, and Gerris Wilkinson's non-existent.

Even if it was the pope reporting it, I'm taking a wait and see approach on this one. If I'm Bates I don't see whats not to like about Wilson.

The Broncos have the picks to move up, so why not draft Willis and put him next to DJ? That would be a good tandem for a long time.

Per Rotoworld March 23rd, 1:54pm

Broncos linebacker Al Wilson is in New York taking a physical.

If he passes, there seems a good chance Wilson will be the Giants' new weak-side linebacker. The Eagles and Lions were both believed to still be in the mix Thursday, so it's unclear if a deal will immediately go down.

The Broncos' Pro Bowl linebacker Al Wilson traveled to New York today to take a physical, but The Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J. reports a potential trade to the Giants has been called off.

A source close to Wilson confirmed to The Denver Post he is in New York, and if he passed his physical, a trade might be completed.

The Star-Ledger report said a source familiar with the talks confirmed the deal is dead.

Wilson's agent, Peter Schaffer, said Thursday night he is attempting to broker a deal, ending the nine-season veteran's stay in Denver, but Schaffer didn't rule out Wilson returning to the Broncos.

The Broncos are attempting to trade Wilson in part because they need to pare their payroll after they signed free

Farewell Al?

* Tell us what you think about the Broncos attempting to trade Al Wilson.

agents Travis Henry and Daniel Graham to a combined guarantee of $27 million. Wilson is to make a $5.2 million salary in 2007, plus $600,000 in offseason workout bonuses .

If Wilson goes, the Broncos will first look to move outside linebacker D.J. Williams to the middle. Among the candidates to replace Williams on the outside are Eddie Moore, who like Wilson starred at the University of Tennessee, Louis Green, T.J. Hollowell and Cameron

Initial RUMORS is that his neck caused him to fail, its all PURE speculation at this point tho. Untill confirmed I will remain optimistic and choose to believe that the Eagles or the Lions is offering something better :lmao:

While it was not suprising that NY Giants needed a LB with the departure of Lavar Arrington, and K Mitchell has priced himself out of the market (for now), what do the Eagles want with Al Wilson if Trotter is their MLB and supposedly has OK knees (depending on which report you read) and a solid backup in Omar Gaithers?

I saw a "rumor" report that Trotter is having some significant problems with his knees and might miss significant time or be out completely for the 2007 season, but then saw a vague Eagles PR report saying that he was "ready for 2007" and working out already.

Don't know what to believe, but I am skeptical of him being the monster he was at the start of 2006.

Buyer beware.

While players fail for many reasons, and some of the reasons have nothing to do with actual physical performance, it doesnt bode well for Wilson. This article speculated that Wilson might even be released by Denver.

A much-discussed trade that would have sent Denver Broncos star middle linebacker Al Wilson to the New York Giants was severely jeopardized Friday, and perhaps scuttled entirely, when the five-time Pro Bowl performer failed a physical examination.

Two league sources familiar with the trade discussions said that Giants team physicians and front office personnel were concerned by a neck problem discerned during the examination.

Trade talks had progressed to the point where Wilson traveled east to meet with the Giants, and the expectation was that a deal would have been consummated had he passed the exam. It is believed the teams had agreed to most of the principle elements of the trade, with the deal contingent on Wilson's health. Clubs typically include a physical examination in trade agreements.

It is not known what the Giants would have surrendered in the deal. Some reports indicated New York would part with third-year defensive end Justin Tuck, but they were unfounded.

It is doubtful, sources said, that the trade talks will be revived.

Wilson, 29, has missed only three games in eight seasons, never more than one in a given year. He was carted from the field with a neck injury last December after running into teammate and defensive tackle Gerard Warren, but returned to play the following week. He did miss the final game of the season with neck and thumb injuries. He subsequently had offseason surgery to address the thumb injury.

An online search of Wilson's medical history since entering the NFL referred to only two games missed because of any neck injuries.

In the NFL, however, there are no leaguewide standards for physicals, and examinations are totally subjective. Often a team will "fail" a player on a physical, not only because of the medical risk involved, but also because of financial exposure. Wilson has three seasons remaining on his current contract -- at base salaries of $5.2 million (2007), $3.65 million (2008), $5.15 million (2009) and $6.8 million (2010) -- and that could have been a factor in the Giants' decision.

Also, just because Wilson did not pass the Giants' standards does not mean he cannot play for the Broncos again.

A first-round choice in the 1999 draft, Wilson has been the subject of trade speculation for much of the offseason. ESPN.com reported earlier this month that Detroit officials had attempted to acquire Wilson from Denver in the deal that sent cornerback Dre Bly to the Broncos and offensive tackle George Foster and tailback Tatum Bell to the Lions. The Philadelphia Eagles also inquired about Wilson's availability.

But the NFL Network reported this week that the Broncos were discussing the trade with the New York Giants, and the linebacker's agent confirmed there had been negotiations involving his client.

Despite his five Pro Bowl appearances, Wilson is not a high profile defender. But he has been one of the NFL's steadiest playmakers, a tackling machine with 960 career stops, and the rare middle linebacker who can stay on the field for third down and be effective, as reflected in his 21 ½ sacks, five interceptions and 49 pass deflections.

Had he been traded, Wilson would have moved to weakside linebacker in New York, since the Giants already possess a standout middle linebacker in Antonio Pierece. Denver would probably have filled the vacancy created by his departure by moving starting strongside linebacker D.J. Williams, a first-round choice in 2004, into the middle.
