Alex Gibbs has left the Falcons (1 Viewer)

Pretty well known blocking scheme. Highly likely that his replacement won't be as good a OL coach/consultant.

Pretty big deal, maybe a shade beneath Mora leaving IMO.

IMO, it's a bigger deal than Mora. It's no coincidence that the Falcons running game took a spike when he showed up, and started fo fade a couple of years after he left Denver. Here's to hoping he re-unites with Shanahan!

The Vikes could sure use a guy like Gibbs to get their O-Line to perform up to expectations. Hopefully President/GM Childress is reading this.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports offensive line coach, "consultant," and running-game guru Alex Gibbs has left the Falcons.

Gibbs is the godfather of the zone-blocking scheme and credited with turning athletic, smaller offensive linemen into cut-blockers capable of routinely taking the biggest and best of defensive linemen out of plays. His loss leaves Atlanta open to a possible switch in blocking scheme, which we don't think is exceptional news for Jerious Norwood.

As I recall he left the Broncos of his own accord and maybe took some time off due to health concerns??? He was only on site part time.

I know he spent some time with UofM this season. I hope he does move back to the Broncos.

I didn't know he was still with the Falcons.

I think the key to his scheme is having the smallish, quick O-liners. Some teams will take a while to aquire the right size lineman to make the scheme work to its best.

ALEX THE GREAT

Lost in the shuffle of Jim Mora's firing was this development -- Atlanta also lost coaching consultant Alex Gibbs, one of the top offensive line coaches in NFL history.

In each of Alex Gibbs' three seasons with Atlanta, the Falcons led the NFL in rushing. Gibbs notified the Falcons in December he would not return, and he now is awaiting his next coaching move from the comforts of his home in Arizona.

Gibbs is regarded as one of the rare coaches who can overhaul a team's running game, have an impact on its passing game and improve an entire offense. He did it with the Raiders, the Chiefs, the Broncos and the Falcons -- and he will do it for whichever team hires him next.

His price tag never is cheap. But the results Gibbs gets are undeniable. Any team that wants one of the league's top rushing offenses can be assured of getting what it wants by hiring Gibbs, one of the highest-profile free agents now available.

Since Denver fired his son, last year I beleive after telling his dad what their defensive signals were when they played atlanta, I sincerely doubt he goes to Denver.

I didn't know he was with the Raiders. Did that end badly?

Any chance of going back to the darkside?

Nice to see how much respect this guy gets.

Not many of the HC candidates have fans saying "sign with my team" like this.

For the people wanting him as an OC, A) hes never been one B) hes only worked part-time the past few years, hes not taking a full-time position.

Of the places where Gibbs might make sense, Minny is not one of them.Theyve got $80m+ tied up in McKinnie and Hutchinson, both of whom are not suited to play in Gibbs' system. Marcus Johnson, Artis Hicks and Ryan Cook are all too big and not agile enough.Basically, the Vikings would be throwing away several high draft picks and tens of millions of dollars to get subpar play out of their OL with Gibbs there. :towelwave:

:banned: I like the guy, but Gibbs is an old man. He's been coaching since the late 60's, NFL since the early 80's. I don't see him being anything more than a consultant/part time guy like he has been the past couple of years. I'd rather have Greg Knapp as an OC than Gibbs.

All good reasons why the Arizona Cardinals should hire him as a "consultant" :banned: A team with a real need; a guy who knows how to get it done and he live in Arizona

Fired or resigned?
I haven't seen this reported. I'm figuring his contract was just done.Apparently he told the team in early December. I'm curious if firing Mora was a good or bad move knowing Gibbs was leaving. Do they need someone familiar with his blocking scheme to continue it? Just scrap it altogether and start anew with a new staff? I expect other sites(Roto already has-norwood) to question whether Norwood and Dunn will be as good in another system.

That happened? :lmao:
Yeap. That's the reason why his son was fired in mid season in 2004 actually not 2005.I should state that it's never been confirmed but I have some Bronco contacts that have confirmed that is what happened. Shanny has been asked before if that is what happened but he won't talk about it.

Family loyalty is great and all, but you have a job to do. I can't believe that Alex Gibbs would have allowed his son to put himself in that position, and if he invited him to give him that information he's a real tool. How did the team find out?

I've been trying to think over that. Norwood had a 6.2 ypc average for the year. He had 4 over 20 yards including a 78 yard TD on 99 carries. Will a different system chance him significantly? I dont think so. Even a harsh decrease in production and he is a good fantasy back with more carries.

I agree with this. My post was 1/3 homage to Gibbs, 1/3 ripping the underachieving Minnesota OL, and 1/3 mocking Childress. In all seriousness though, I would make whatever roster/coaching changes are needed to make this unit work, up to and including imploding the thing and starting from scratch with competent coaches. Paying $140 million for a line that can’t block isn’t the solution.
