Alex Smith is just as good as Leinart (1 Viewer)

Lots of threads about how great Leinart is, and I agree.

Just want to point out that Alex Smith is looking just as good this year, although he does not get the national TV appearance to show it off like Leinart did last night.

Alex Smith is the one bright spot on the 49ers this year. He's making smart decisions, is showing pinpoint accuracy, and is extremeley poised. All this without as many weapons as Leinart has.

Looking at the scoreboard each week and seeing the 49ers give up 40+ points will make anyone laugh including me, but it also covers up the progress this young kid is making.

Frank Gore down?

Totally Agree. Alex Smith has been quite a pleasant suprise this year. He's a capable #2 this year, and i think by next year, he can be a borderline top 10 fantasy QB.

ALSO... outside of Frank Gore being more effective than Edge at this point - Leinert's talent at WR is a lot better than what the 49ers have.

Fitz, Boldin, and Bryant Johnson -- all of them heads and tails above Antonio Bryant -- and I say this as a 49ers fan who thinks Bryant is pretty decent.

Looking forward to seeing future gunslinger duels between Smith & Leinert in the Wild Wild NFC West.

I am thinking about dropping Bledsoe for either Smith or Leinart. Who would you rather have down the stretch?

A Smith 92yds/2int vs the Chiefs

Leinart 253yds/2td/1int vs Chiefs

A Smith 165yds/3td/1int vs Raiders

Leinart ... we will see what he does vs the Raiders this week.

Leinart is just in a better position to get QB1 fantasy points. A Smith doesn't have the weapons to throw to and won't get QB1 fantasy numbers on a consistent basis. Remaining schedule looks a bit easier for Leinart then Smith.

Looking at their skeds, I'd say you have to give the nod to SF. Forunately for SF, they got SD out of the way, and DEN is week 17.

AZ's hardest match is gonna be @home vs. DEN, which just happenes to be week 15. :(

I still like Leinart though just based on the talent around him. If Fitz comes back after the bye, Leinart should be a lock for QB1 numbers. Just make sure you have alternate plans for week 15 !!

SF sked

@Chi Min @Det Sea @StL @NO GB @Sea Ari @Den

AZ sked

@GB bye Dal Det @Min @StL Sea Den @SF @SD

Alex Smith is also more likely to be on your league's waiver wire than is Matt Leinart.

I'd rather not have to trade anything of value away for my QB2.

Smith is crazy young too. He came into the league at like 12. He's actually younger than Leinart. So, arguable, has more room to develop still.

It may be a bit too early to say, but Smith's progression is not unlike that of Eli in his second year. Both were brutal in their 1st years amid rookie jitters, but took a big step forward in year 2.

In fact, Smith's progression may be even more impressive given the lesser talent around him relative to Eli.

Alex Smith obviously has a super tough match up this week v. Chicago. He laid a goose egg a few weeks back v. the Chiefs, but for some reason, I think he'll do better today.

If he has even a marginally good day (200 yards, a TD and no int's or fumbles ) I think that will be a good litmus test of his maturation as a QB and readiness to move to the upper echelon of NFL QB's.

Smith this year, but Leinart long term. Nothing to back that up, as I haven't had breakfast yet, so let's call it a hunch.
