Alex Smith, the TE not the QB (1 Viewer)

There doesn't seem to be much talk about this guy, but I was pretty impressed by his rookie season at a a position where rookies generally struggle.

41/367/2

that's more receptions in his rookie year than

Gonzalez

Gates

Heap

Witten

Crumpler

Looking for some insight from the Tampa fans. Is this guy a flash or is there real talent there? Is he situational or does he play every down? What does the depth chart look like in Tampa at TE? Does Simms look to him often?

TIA

Pretty quick for a TE. When Clayton was dead at the end of the year Smith filled in on his routes a little bit. Good blocker too, flat out busted a few guys during the season.

Gruds likes to use two TEs, and he'll be the primary guy this year, so he'll be on the field a lot.

Simms-Caddy-Clayton-Smith is a real nice young offensive core.

And with the addition of some big OLinemen, hopefully Smith won't be stuck blocking as much this year.

He's got good hands, so I expect his receptions to climb quite a bit this year.

TE's usually take a year to get acclimated in an NFL offense.

I expect we'll see the Bucs take advantage of his speed alot more and his ypc average will get up around 11-12.

something like 50-575-5 wouldnt surprise me.

I just snagged him in the 16th round of a dynasty draft that is TE required and a ppr. I already had Gates and LJ Smith but I think he was a steal that late and couldn't pass him up.

They are looking like a scary offensive core to build around.....

FWIW, he had both is his scores in week one. Didn't see the end zone again.

Smith has nice hands, runs good patterns and seems like a good choice for the future. Plenty is contingent on how much TB throws to their TE though.

if clayton faulters (or continues to faulter), or simms loses confidence, I expect to see Smith as a major contributor to the offense this year

he's actually 2nd on the FBG depth chart behind Becht. An oversight?
Well, I may be wrong but I think TB uses the single, blocking TE set more than the single receiving or double TE sets. So I would guess that Becht, as the blocking TE, will probably see the field more. But there is no way he will out fantasy point Smith, IMHO.

Gruden uses a ton of two-TE sets. Might have been to help out the OLine in pass pro, but they're usually out there.

Ehh...then maybe they just list the vet as the first string? Because I can't see anyway that you should draft Becht before Smith. Hell, I can't see anyway you should draft Becht before Jaclyn Smith. :D

Since Joffer is in bump mode, I thought I'd return the favor. Of course, nobody reads his threads.
