ESPN people are saying he is out 4 - 6 weeks and NFL Total Access says 2-4 weeks. anyone know the truth ?

:(

JAWS sais yesterday Alexander would be out 4-6 weeks on ESPN - then on Total Access I heard 2 - 4 weeks like I heard before. Just trying to make heads or tails of this situation.

Also - Alexander isn't playing this week for certain. Holmgren said as much.

Texican is correct hat he believes th epower of prayer will put him on the field sooner than anticipated - but the medical staff has a more authoritative say on whether Holmgren will choose to play him.

Actually I think Shaun was saying that before the second CT scan on Tuesday confirmed the fracture.

He was - this is correct - only thing we do not really got I guess is the real timeline -- Is Jaws right on 4-6 weeks or is Total Acess right with 2-4 -- HUGE difference IMO.

Typical healing time for fractures is 6-8. With an NFL player's access to rehab, PT, medical staff, the 4-6 might sound right.Again, I don't think we know the extent of the fracture. I don't think it was displaced.

The tests show a cracked 4th metacarpal which is the long bone next to the "pinky". No weight bearing and is a better rehab time, I would say may be back after the bye, 4 weeks at the longest.

The truth is no body knows. If any one knows about the details of the bone fracture and an actual description of the injury then one of the resident doctors on the board good give an opinion and we'd be able to compare it to past foot cracks. is it a big crack, little crack, all I’ve heard is that there’s a crack and with that its just speculation. I think the swelling going down so quickly and the lack of pain for Alexander points to a quicker return then latter. We'll know more in two weeks after the bye week.

Metatarsal (foot), not metacarpal (hand). It is weight-bearing.

Can this type of injury linger if he returns too soon? Or even if he returns when its fully healed, can it affect his play, or is he expected to be back at 100%?

Of course. Any inury can/will.

I doubt simple fractures like this have any long-term effects if they are allowed to heal. As long as it's not a fracture/dislocation that involves the TMT joint ligaments at the base of the metatarsal. Those types of injuries can be devastating long-term.

Thanks Shuke! I was in that other thread with you and Jene. I would just like to add that the 4th metatarsal is not next to the "pinky" (toe). The "pinky" toe is the 5th phalanx and would articulate with the 5th metatarsal. The 4th metatrsal articulates with the 4th phalanx (the one next to the "pinky" toe)

Stress fractures in the feet can be tricky. Many times one can continue to play on them for awhile and just endure the pain, but they do get worse. If its a weight bearing bone, best to err on the side of caution. Risk of a "cascade effect" as the natural tendency if for folks to modify their gait or stride a bit as a way of reducing the discomfort associated with repititive pounding -- this can sometimes precipitate other leg injuries.

I believe someone stated that it was displaced.
I think that it was a mis-quote. Stress fractures should not be displaced, and Alexander would be in a cast if it was. Also, the time frame would be greater. Fractures should not linger if allowed to heal properly. He can make the fracture worse if he comes back too soon. It all depends on how big the crack is and how much blood supply is getting to that part of the metatarsal to say when Alexander will be back.

There will probably be a weekly scan to see how much that crack is getting filled in over time. If it's a slow process it probably means there is a low blood supply in the area, and we can expect him to be out for a while.

There is also a problem that Alexander is going to feel good while not putting much stress on that foot, and he is going to feel like he is ready to return. However, when he starts making cuts he will notice if that bone has healed. They will be able to use the scan to determie if the bone has healed enough to start playing again, and then use pain as a guide. But if the fracture is healed then he should not feel any pain while running. If he still has pain while running it simply means he is not healed enough to return yet.
