All hail the rise of cat men, an antidote to toxic masculinity (1 Viewer)

Wait, Ilov. Hasn't there been a direct curriculum and systemic change in order to serve girls better. Remember the critical and political acclimation Reviving Ophelia got? I mean, this isn't a zero-sum game necessarily, but people have treated it that way.

Systemic and curriculum changes need to be made, or we're going lag behind other societies.
I partly being sarcastic, just funny that in a thread about how guys are weak af these days turned into a thread about complaining that school isn't fair to guys. I have no clue what Ophelia is, looks like I was in middle school when it came out. I don't think school is really biased towards females. I'm all for more vocational stuff, more recess, etc but that's not a gender issue IMO.

You're looking at it from a high school perspective (the grade level you teach, and your use of the word "guys"). MITYH is talking about grade school (his use of the word "boys", using extra recess to help).

But we've been making things extra-special for girls for years now. Why not make things extra-special for boys? Especially if it helps them out.
Sure, I can only examine it from the end I have experience with. What is done in elementary schools that caters so much to girls?

Lot's of insecure males around these parts...but we already know this.

I own two cats.

Come and get some mother ####ers!!!!

I loved my cat Smokey in seventh grade, too. Then he got hit by the school bus and died in the street. My mother found him. She thought he was a discarded sweater.

I don't think it has as much to do with anything superficial like pink notebooks or pink pencils, and I don't think any changes have been intentionally biased against boys. I think it is more of a by-product of larger classrooms and other well-intentioned ideas that have had undesired consequences when it comes to young boys. Things like an emphasis on sitting still and being quiet. Listening. An earlier and earlier emphasis on literacy skills. Normal boy behavior being classified as bullying or unacceptable behavior. Less recess. Things like that.

I had a cat growing up.

doesn't make the article any less ridiculous.

Mostly the emphasis on sedentary learning environments with emphasis on sitting still, being quiet and listening.  Also the resistance to naming winners and losers or allowing for failure to be named as such.

The typical male brain does not function well in that environment and the 95% female elementary education environment just couldn't comprehend that fact.  The entire elementary school system is built mostly by women.  They don't understand why a boy needs to scream and run and wrestle and fidget and how more learning and growth comes from failure than fake success.  There needs to be a balance and the pendulum has swung too far into the effeminate direction.  The statistics bear this out.

My wife teaches at a very cutting edge public school.  The whole building (K-6) is an experiment in alternative learning techniques.  They allow the children much more freedom of movement and varied seating areas and work spaces (bean bags, benches, stand-up tables, etc.).  They let them bumble through science experiments to see what they can figure out on their own instead of adhering to a step by step process.  They link everything together and study multiple subjects simultaneously, like pausing during a math lesson to discuss a spelling concept that they have been working on.  The idea is to get the students actively involved in their learning which they are finding to be much more effective for the boys.

Genius. We need more experiments like this.

In Japan, the birth rate is declining. Their whole society is imbalanced as a result. There was a story recently about how in Korea and Japan how some folks have simply given up on marrying for love, passion and settled for marrying friends instead. In Japan, there are also The Grass Eaters. These are young men would be almost hypo-masculine and anti-macho. Things are so bad in Japan, the male talent complain about their jobs in the Japanese porn industry.

In Japan and China more women are also choosing not to marry and have children. It is speculated this is because the societies are very male dominated.

This is obviously leading to more men not marrying and declining birthrates overall

Good stuff and I agree with a lot of what you say. From what I know of school 20,40,80 years ago, it was even more geared towards sitting quietly in your seat and listening to the teacher. Maybe I am wrong and it's just stereotypes from TV/movies, but I have a hard time picturing a 4th grade teacher in 1950 letting the kids fidget, scream, experiment, etc. Education has drastically shifted away from a "sage on the stage" delivery mode where the teacher just teachers to more collaborative and discovery based models. This is the way the pendulum has been swinging for 15-20 years.

I like cats. I like all animals. There is nothing unmasculine about cats.

They look pretty but are stone cold predators.

They torture their prey for fun.

We need more masculinity in our society.  Much much more more.

Masculinity does not = chauvenism

and you can be masculine and still be in touch with your feelings and not be violent

This whole anti-masculine initiative is just engineering our society to be docile.

homosexuals on E banging and dancing and banging in club bathrooms listening to lady Gaga don't historically rebel

As a product of formal, monolithic education - gilt-edged ruler scars on hands & neck, seriously, as proof - i'm well aware how completely necessary it was that we grow past that. Unfortunately, it caused us to virtually discard the most important aspect of human personality - finding & knowing & learning to access one's quiet place, one's home base from which to begin again in the event of failure or confusion. Every mammal in earth's history until now has learned this, whether for the hunt, protection, the peace of the herd or simply as patience to endure. A human organism which must be engaged to function normally simply cannot be happy.

A human unable to reach groundzero in any aspect of personality is spectrumally bipolar, free-running. All living systems which free-run head straight to disease mode, overload. Brain science will eventually show that all counter-productive behavior, mental illness, has its roots in dropping the reins of personality, whether genetically inclined to, scared away from, or unschooled in. The brain is capable of as many combinations of possibility as there are atoms in the solar system - it will exhaust all possibilities if not re-set. That is why people go crazy in love, for example, and gamehead is an acquired state of the phenomenon. Franticism, i call it.

People can be taught to pick up the reins in every aspect of feeling, but not unless they know their quiet place. Woe is us more than ever, though all our advances, for not only do almost none of us know theirs, they don't even know that one exists. I can't tell you how many people who have asked me for help have been unable to take advantage of the lessons because a skill for patience simply doesn't exist within them. Extraordinary -

Also every time I see this thread title I think about having sex with Simone Simon while she morphs into a jaguar.

Actually, the July Revolution of 1830, which ended the reign of House Bourbon in France after 250 years on the throne, was primarily driven by homosexuals on E dancing and banging in club bathrooms listening to Lady Gaga.

Proud  cat man here, but it is bittersweet.

My 9 year old cat, Indy, is dying. Stopped eating, losing weight. Probably going to have him put to sleep later in the week
