Other: A-Ha - Take on Me

Not my favorite 80s tune by a long shot, but arguably the most quintessential 80s pop selection. Heavy synth, effete vocals, danceable, basically a one-hit wonder (no one really cares about The Sun Always Shines on T.V. charting in the UK), and a breakthrough music video.

I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

I went with 867-5309 Jenny. It just takes me back to that time. Songs from big artists kind of blur the moment for me so I'll go with that.

My favorite that would fit the ilk above (corny, overplayed, typical 80s) for me would be "Everybody Have Fun Tonight"

or Everybody Wants To Rule The World

Great call on Tears for Fears. I'd add these to the poll

If You Leave - OMD

Always Something There To Remind Me - Naked Eyes

This reminded me of the awesome run we had of album/single of the year polls. They are all archived now, but linked here: Best Music Master Thread.

We've done this before:

Best Single of 1980 -- Winner: You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
Best Single(s) of 1981 -- Winner: In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins
Best Singles of 1982 -- Winner: 1999 - Prince
Best Song of 1983 -- Winner: Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
Best Single 1984 -- Winner: Thriller - Michael Jackson
Best Single 1985 -- Winner: Money for Nothing - Dire Straits
Best Song of 1986 -- Winner: Livin' On a Prayer - Bon Jovi
Best singles of 1987 -- Winner: Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses
Best Single(s) 1988 -- Winner: Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns and Roses
Best Singles of 1989 -- Winner: One - Metallica
What ONE Song Best Exemplifies '80s Music -- no poll, so no clear winner

Interesting that we had 10 winners in those polls, and the OP here does not include any of the 10. (Not saying I agreed with those poll winners.)

Not really sure exactly what the criteria is for our selections, but I don't think anyone really cares. Any excuse to reminisce about the soundtrack of the 80's is fine by me.

Anyway, here's a great song from 1984 that always brings me back to that time in my life. A unique, haunting song, with an unforgettable video. This one is very nostaligic for me.

VH1 did this and IIRC they chose Come On Eileen.

I would also choose the already mention Tears for Fears Everybody Wants To Rule The World.

Out of those I would pick Money for Nothing. Hard to belief a list of choices to define the best 80's song does not include one Micheal Jackson song. In 100 years from now, Micheal will be the one remembered from the 80's.

Simple Minds' Don't You Forget About Me should be among the nominations.

A quintessential 80's song, It is also evocative one of the decades's most iconic movies.

This is a good one.

The Cars - Greatest Hits was the first album I think I bought.

People actually voted for that Bonnie Tyler piece of dreck earworm? Must love karaoke.

The song alone did not do it for me, it was the total package with video.
