***** ALL-TIME NBA/ABA DRAFT ***** (Scoobus is Champion!) (3 Viewers)

I think I put the wrong video lol but that was the game in the 70s. You aren't going to watch 70s hoops and see a bunch of spread the court deep shooters like 2020.

I have fixed the video but I guess the beers got me lol.
Thank god. I can't watch that much real game from the 70s. Carmelo Anthony would have been the best player ever in that era - he was still really good with that ####ty shot selection in the modern NBA.

I love 'Melo was much as anyone and I agree he was better off in an older era but I think you are really discounting how much Bob changed the idea of what a big man was. Even the plays you think are bad, remember that was a 6'10 guy center. The idea of a man that tall, that long plating like that was unheard of.

I couldn't even pick a player out of that first clip I watched. They just kept running up and down the court, taking bad shots and turning the ball over.

Yeah, I clicked the wrong video. I think player who just got a random 30 minutes of play would be unflattering. A conversation of style of play by era is interesting but when looking at decade teams it won't matter since they all plated in the same game. Look at the correct link I edited the post with. Bob is such an underrated player.

Oh well...

17.4 - John Drew - 70's SF (moving Roger Brown to SG)

I had to either go with a SF or a PG at SG here and I didn't want anybody else running this team but Jo Jo.  So I get another athletic wing to run the floor, put the ball in the hole, and rebound.

Drew was a getter of buckets.  He averaged over 20 ppg in 6 seasons over his 11 year career ending with per game averages of 20.7 pts, 6.9 rbs & 1.4 stls.  He was a long, athletic 6'6" with a smooth stroke that earned him 2 all-star nods in his career.

Unfortunately, his career was derailed by cocaine abuse and he was eventually one of the first players suspended from the NBA for violating their new drug policies.

Incredible endurance, tried to fight the other coach tonight.

17.6 SG Rip Hamilton, 00s

Career: 17.1ppg, 3.1rpg, 3.4apg

Peak: 18.8ppg, 3.4rpg, 3.7apg

3x All Star

1x NBA Champ

Came into this turn with zero 00s players and am coming out with Rip and Jamison. Does that mean I can compete for first in that decade?  Yes.

oof, i assumed he was taken few rounds ago. i would have tried to re-arrange some pieces to bring Coatesville to my squad

Had to do a little extra diligence to make sure I think he's BPA right now:

17.08 Michael Finley, SF 90s

Waffled a bit because you could make a good argument he's a 2000s player, but his best seasons are 95-02, peaking in the 99 and 2000 season with all star selections. He was a great scorer for what's left here without any true defensive deficiency, though definitely not a stopper. His best years were free throw rates in the upper 20s, all in the 90s, and he's a 37.5% career 3FG% even playing in the 90s and early 2000s pre-three emphasis. Also, part of my first ever basketball fandom team, the 2002 Dallas Mavericks, which started 14-0 behind Dirk, Nash, and Finley as a big three. Team would, like so many of my childhood, make the western conference finals against the Spurs, losing in this particular season, after a awesome clash with the Webber Kings in the round prior.

@trader jake

17.09 Derek Harper – PG 80s

Classic 80s point guard for Dallas that would wear you out on both sides of the court.  On offense he improved his scoring average the first eight years of his career, all while putting up over seven assists and two steals.  Was tough around the hoop, could draw fouls, and had a three-point stroke that would fit in today’s game.  He was even better on defense, earning 2 All-NBA Defensive team honors.  In the 90’s he was traded to the Knicks and played for the Riley rock fight teams.

Basketball Stuff:

  • Retired #11 in Steals and #17 in assists (still top 25 in both) in NBA history
  • During 84-85 he finished in the top 10 in DEFENSIVE Box +/-
  • During 86-87 he finished in the top 10 in OFFFENSIVE Box +/-
  • Joe Dumar’s career similarity score is closest to...Derek Harper’s
I’ll file under "Reality Heisman":

  • His daughter Dana was a contestant on season 11 of The Voice
  • During the OJ Simpson ‘chase’, the NBA Finals were interrupted.  Which means at some point you were watching/have watched the white Bronco and Derek Harper split screen but didn’t even know it. 🟠🧉🚓🚓🚓🚓🚓

Damn. Harp was the other guy on my list, but had him in 90s. Thought I was safe to wait :(
He was a tough one to place (frankly, I've avoided drafting a few players that fell into this split eligibility to avoid it).  Harper played the entirety of the 90s, but was on horrible Mavs teams early in the decade and was an after thought his last few seasons bouncing around.  His entire time in the 80s was his growth from a young kid to a star.  He won All-Defensive honors in 86-87 and 89-90, but in the end I think of him as a Mav.

...and the guy that should have stopped passing the ball to XXX in game 7 of the '94 Finals. 😄

17.10 - Rudy LaRusso - PF/1960's

I am going with Daniel's uncle.  The guy that really gave the Karate Kid his competitive spirit.

LaRusso was taken by the Minneapolis Lakers in the second round of the 1959 NBA draft out of Dartmouth College, and played eight years with them and two for the San Francisco Warriors. On November 26, 1959, he scored 15 points and 20 rebounds in a 95-114 loss to the Cincinnati Royals. He became the second Lakers rookie to have grabbed at least 20 rebounds in a single game, joining teammate Elgin Baylor. On February 24, 1960, he scored a season-high 27 points in a 110-131 loss to the Boston Celtics.

In his second year, LaRusso slightly improved his statistics from his rookie season. In his second game of the season, LaRusso recorded a career-high 28 points in a 96-112 loss to the St. Louis Hawks.

In 1962, he scored 50 points, at that point the most ever by a Jewish NBA basketball player, in a game for the Lakers against the St. Louis Hawks.  In 1967–68, he finished seventh in the league with a career-best average of 21.8 ppg.

Career highlights and awards

5× NBA All Star (1962, 1963, 1966, 1968, 1969)

NBA All-Defensive Second Team (1969)

@Mister CIAtake your pick

I thought for sure you’d have taken him by now. He wouldn’t have made it back to you next round, he was the top of my list.

A close family friend used to work for the Mavs back in the 80s and he used to give me all kinds of cool free merch. Loved the sweet green and blue color scheme back then and it’s awesome when they bring it back in their retro jerseys now.

Checking in.  I will soon, but skip me in the meantime if it helps move things along.  Getting to a point where Ihave to peruse who is left and choose wisely.

No rush. It’s the weekend so no clock.

Were more than half way done after just a week, so we’re cruising.

Just threw it out there in case Doug dropped by.  Besides there was the added possibility it would help me to decide ... that was until I found the perfect backcourt mate to pair with Ginobili on my 00s team.

17.11 - Steve "Stevie Franchise" Francis, PG, 00s.

I hated him back in the day because, well, I hated all Rocket players.

I had a hard time debating between Baron and Francis for my 00s PG.

This is just beer #1 talking, but would it be possible to create playoff brackets (where the team that spent the most draft capital on an all-decade team is seeded #1, and so on) and then judge each matchup. It would be fun to hypothesize over specific matchups, and settling on the top 2 for each decade would be straightforward, but sorting out 3-16 might be a bear.  Flooding the NBA forum with polls would seem appropriate for such an endeavor.

I was thinking about that when I set things up. We could do that with the pantheon teams and use the regular season (decades) rankings as seeding. The NBA forum might be a good call.

Or since the pantheon teams might be more of all-time rankings with more a focus on career achievements than who beats who, maybe it would be better to do a tournament with the best in show teams?  Then the focus could be more of a who beats who debate.

Id be fine with this if that’s what everyone would prefer.

I'm fine with anything, but I do like the idea of matching up decade teams against one another, as it leans more towards the objective than subjective.  How would the Jordan team fare against the Olajuwon team in the playoffs, for example.  Or maybe, Barkley finely gets a ring.

It would be a long slow burn to get to the center of this tootsie pop, that's for sure.

Just throwing a half-baked idea out there.

17.12: PF Willie Naulls, 1960s

4X All-Star for the Knicks between 1957-58 and 1961-62. Three-year peak (1959-60 to 1961-62) of 23 ppg and 13 rpg. Career per36 of 19.7 ppg and 11.4 rpg. 81.2% career free-throw shooter, to boot.

Holy moly I totally forgot about him. Nice grab

17.14 Paul Millsap, PF, 10s

4x All-Star and excellent defender. Does a lot of the dirty work, perfect guy to pair with Melo. Pretty good stroke, several years around 36% from 3 until developing into 40%+ shooter from 3 late in his career.
