17.15 Metta World Peace (Ron Artest, Metta Sandiford-Artest) SF, 00s

He has apparently become a bit under appreciated since his peak in the early 2000’s, probably because of some small conflict in 2004. Not only was he one of the best defenders of the last 20 years, but he was also intimidating like few players since, kind of a Dennis Rodman of the 2000s. But, I think we probably all remember that - what we forget, is he was a hell of an all around player in his prime as well.

From the 02-03 season through the 08-09 season (before taking a tertiary role with the Lakers) he averaged 18.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 2.4 APG, 2.1 SPG on roughly league average TS% for the period. He won the DPOY award in 03-04 (the only other non-PF/C in the last 25 years is Leonard) and made the AS game and 3rd team All-NBA that year. In total he made 4 All-Defense teams.

Artest/MWP is the best defensive perimeter player of the decade with the size to match up with some of the elite PFs of the era as well. So far, nobody has drafted both an elite offensive SG and SF, so he should help make up for some of the defensive deficiencies of my Nash-Arenas back court. Hopefully the Arenas/Artest crazy can be contained by teammate relationship savant, Nash.

17.16 - Mychal Thompson, PF 80s

Stud interior defender and rebounder, who could also score when needed. Was stoked when he was added to the Showtime Lakers and paid off as a key contributor to two titles. 

Career - 13.7 pts, 7.4 reb, 2.3 ast, 0.7 stl, 1.1 blk

Peak (5years) - 17.5 pts, 9.3 reb, 3.8 ast, 0.9 stl, 1.5 blk 

I’ve now got a father/son duo to go along with a pair of brothers (Gasols).

One of the premier shooters of the decade, and all time. Incredibly efficient considering his high volume of 3s (for the era).  A long career with 19k points scored, with an incredible peak. 

Career - 15.7 pts, 3.5 reb, 1.4 ast, 0.8 stl on 48% / 40% / 78% shooting

Peak (7 years) - 21.7 pts, 4.1 reb, 2.0 ast, 1.0 stl on 50% / 40% / 79% shooting

18.02 Rashard Lewis, PF, 00s

The first real stretch 4 that I remember, at least at the volume and accuracy.

Gonna be a fun team - Steve Nash, Gilbert Arenas, Artest, Lewis....TBD

 
18.03 Danny Green, SG, 10s

Should probably look at other decades, but it's Saturday night and I don't wanna research, so we'll go with the perfect guy to round out my 10s squad.  There may be slightly better shooters left, and slightly better defenders left, but no one who combines the two at Green's level.  Probably on the Mount Rushmore of 3 and D guys, he fits into any team seamlessly, and we are building teams here.

Lewis caught the wave of three point shooting in the 00s and evolved to become the preeminent stretch PF in the league in the late 00s, helping the Magic transform from a mediocre also-ran (40-42 prior to Lewis) to a perennial contender. 

In the 00s, he averaged 18.0/5.9/2.0 on .569 TS% (including .394 on 7.5 threes per 100) and totalled 81.0 WS, 31.6 VORP, 2.5 BMP, and 2 AS games. 

I like how my 00s team is coming together. Defensively things are going to be interesting, but the team has the makings of the best offense in the decade that can attack of the dribble and hit A LOT of jump shots.

PG: Nash

SG: Arenas

SF: Artest

PF: Lewis

This is the guy I'd much rather have than Ceballos to include with Payton, Strickland, Horace Grant, and Hakeem.

Going to round out my 2000s roster.

18.06 - Jamal Mashburn, SF 00s

I've got combo guards on my 90s roster with Payton and Strickland, and Mashburn and Horry give me a nice pair of combo forwards on this decade where both can slide seamlessly between SF and PF on both sides of the floor.

I like the fit of my 00s roster.  The balance is so good on the offense and defense, and I think it would give any roster fits. Here's 90 points per game.

18.07 - Andre Drummond C/2010's

Figured it was time to grab this guy and add some rebounding to my 2010's squad.  Now I have Paul, Mitchell and Drummond.

4× NBA rebounding leader (2016, 2018–2020)

BPA.  You would read about players from the 60s or 70s suffering some knee injury and never being the same, but until Brandon Roy it always seemed like “modern” players recovered and were able to continue their careers in some way…not so with B-Roy.  His career was cut short after six seasons due to a knee condition.  Six seasons was enough to put up the following:

  • 2007 – Won rookie of the Year
  • 2008 – Made All-Star team
  • 2009 – All-Star and made an All-NBA team

    At this point of his career Roy already had 24 shots that had tied or won the game with 35 seconds or less remaining.

[*]2010 – All-Star and made an All-NBA team

  • During the season Kobe Bryant called Roy the hardest player to guard in the West, claiming that he had "no weaknesses in his game."

[*]2011 – Injured knee, but he still managed to gut it out on and off, including in the playoffs

  • In game 4 against the Mavs he scored 18 points in the 4th quarter alone to tie the series, but the writing was on the wall with his knee.

[*]2012 – Missed season

[*]2013 – Met Frosty and retired after just 5 games with T’Wolves

He’s now a very well-known high school coach in the Seattle area.  I lost track of him until a 2017 high school game on ESPN, featuring him as head coach with star player Michael Porter Jr.  The team went undefeated that season and he won high school coach of the year.

I still think I'm committing a Scoobus here but I've searched the google sheet like 8 times. 

15-4-6 for his career, with an all-star appearance and 2 all defensive selections. Also the complete evisceration of Damian Lillard in the playoffs on both ends of the floor with a young AD. Now tearing #### up with Giannis. Alongside Kawhi and Noah, we've now got 2010s stoppers for your best player no matter what position they're at, and we probably have better defense than your #2 and #3 guys too. Doesn't hurt that while none of these guys is your classic double-digit assists point guard, Holiday, Kawhi, and Noah are all really good playmakers with all around offensive games. I like how this team is shaping up.

Heck of a team. I am looking back now to kind of see what the best route would have been now that I know where players went. Shaq, KG, Kidd is a heck of a start. That just worked out perfectly for him and then getting Ray Allen was a cherry on top.

18.12 Sean Elliot SF 90s 

2x All Star, 1x NBA Champion. Do it all player who was also an effective volume 3 point shooter and had dangerous quickness and length. At his peak, he shot about 4 triples a game at 40% shooting. Knew how to blend in and play the team game.

18.13 Carlos Boozer, 00's PF

After Stockton/Malone, there was D-Will/Boozer.  Not as good, but a very good tandem that led the Jazz to 4 straight playoffs, including the WCF in '06-07 and averaging a double-double during his time there in Utah. 

He was a 2x all-star, and all-NBA player who ended his career with averages of 16.2 pts & 9.5 rbs.  He will provide a slow and steady inside/outside game with Pierce on my 00's squad.
