My first mock draft of the year, I have been a poster on here for over 5 years.
I will add in five picks at a time. To help combat my work schedule and hopefully to add discussion with you guys.
It will be three rounds as well with no trades.
1) Miami - Chris Long DE Virginia
This may seem to be safe pick, but I also think it is the right pick. If the Dolphins took Matt Ryan here, that would totally negate the John Beck pick from a year ago regardless if they think he is a player or not, you have to give the kid a shot. Long will help in every facet of that defense from run support to coming off the edge in pass rush ability. Parcells remembers what that ability off the edge is like (LT) but time will tell.
2) Rams - Jake Long OT Michigan
The Rams have to take Long to protect their investments on the offensive side of the ball. They signed Bulger to an extension and then let him get beat down this past season. They learned from that and will not let it happen again. With Pace, Barron, and Long they have three very talented tackles that can provide support to that entire offensive skill group (Bulger, Steven Jackson, Torry Holt, Bennett, McMichael, Leonard). They other thing I think that is often not discussed with this pick, would be to kick one of the three tackles inside to guard. I know that they signed Jacob Bell, however sliding one of these talented tackles inside can only help with the line play.
3) Atlanta Falcons - Sedrick Ellis DT USC
I believe that Mike Smith knows that running a successful defense starts up front with the Line. He also wouldn't want to draft a potentially damaged player in Glenn Dorsey. Which leads to the selection of Ellis. He has risen up the charts with his post season work and will be a great addition on that Dline, especially since Coleman has left.
4) Oakland Raiders - Vernon Gholston DE/OLB The Ohio State
You never know with Al Davis running the show, it certainly isn't Lane Kiffin. RDMC is the glamor pick here, however I don't believe with Fargas, Rhodes, Bush, and Jordan...that they will again take another RB. That is simply idiotic, but then again it is Al Davis. Gholston would provide a freakish nature and a playmaker on an already talented defense.
5) Kansas City - Jeff Otah OT Pitt
They need help here like Brody needs to find his mouthpiece after every other pass play. Their Oline is terrible and if they ever want to find out if Croyle is the man, then they need to protect him. This is also a great pick to help out LJ and to give Gonzo/Bowe more time to get open. Some would say Clady here? However, a big massive RT is a better fit in the run game in KC, than a pass protecting LT that has a low wonderlic score.
6) Jets- Darren McFadden RB Arkansas
I kept thinking about this pick for the longest time. Is RunDMC overrated? Will the off the field issues make him slide? How do the Jets have him rated? They have Thomas Jones and Leon Washington...so they can get by. However the determining factor in the end is what will get them over the hump and give them the ability to beat the Pats. Its McFadden, he is explosive and with all of the additions to the offensive line looks to be a great combination.
7) Patriots - Glenn Dorsey DT LSU
What the Patriots don't take a LB or a CB? They will but later in the draft. Historically, the Patriots don't select those positions high in the draft, but rather develop them as later picks. They do however draft defensive lineman in the first round (Seymour, Wilfork, Warren). Seymour is 28 and has had knee issues. Drafting Dorsey will ensure that they stay talented and fresh.
8) Baltimore - Matt Ryan QB BC
This is the right way for Harbaugh to start his tenure with the Ravens. They are a veteren team and need some youth. But more than that they need a face on offense. Ryan will provide that and a future for this offense.
9) Bengals - Keith Rivers LB USC
The Bengals....oh the Bengals, they just need some high character guys on their team and talent on defense. Hopefully Rivers can come through in both areas for them, but you never know. He is ultra-talented and is an instant upgrade on that defense.
10) Saints - Dominique Rodgers- Cromartie CB Tenn St
This kid moved up more than any other player because of his post season. He can flat out fly and that is what this saints secondary needs....a playmaker. The saints wanted Rivers, but will be happy with DRC.
11) Buffalo - James Hardy WR Indiana
With lingering questions about Kelly's knee, he drops in the draft. Hardy is the big, physical WR the Bills need with their current group of midgets. He also has great size to help block for Lynch for years. Hardy and Evans on the outside, with Parrish/Reed in the slot appears perfect for the development of Edwards.
12) Denver - Ryan Clady OT Boise State
Face it the Denver offensive line isn't what it used to be and Shanny knows it. They need to fix it if they have any hope of returning that running game to form and protect their investment in Cutler. Clady is athletic enough for their scheme and could be a great LT.
13) Carolina - Rashard Mendenhall RB Illinois
Mendenhall jumped on the map with a great junior campaign and with a great combine. DeAngelo Williams needs a compliment and Fox loves bigger RB's. Many would choose Chris Williams with this pick, however with Gross and the resigning of Wharton. Also signing Milford Brown, Keydrick Vincent, and Toniu Fonoti leads me to believe they will address a different position in the draft.
14) Chicago - Brandon Albert OG Virginia
Albert is an outstanding Guard and I believe that they are very underrated in the NFL. Think about Seattle's running game with Hutchingson and then after he left. Think about the Browns running game before Steinbach and then with him. Hopefully Albert can bring that running game back to Chicago.
15) Detriot - Jonathan Stewart RB Oregon
The Lions need an identity....any identity on their team. Stewart can hopefully provide that for the Lions. They need a RB and aren't going to go into the season with Tatum Bell.
16) Arizona - Loedis McKelvin CB Troy
The Cardinals take a long look here at DE's and Chris Williams because quite frankly Mike Gandy shouldn't be a starting LT in this league. However, the value of McKelvin combined with Rolle being moved to FS makes CB a need on this team.
17) Vikings - Derrick Harvey DE Florida
The endless list of DE busts in minnesota continues and with Udeze out for the season with leukemia, makes DE a greater need. If he could provide pass rush, this defense could be scary.
18) Houston - Chris Williams OT Vandy
Houston looks hard at CB here, however Williams would provide an upgrade over Ephraim Salaam. Williams will help with the development of Schuab as well as fitting the Zone Blocking Scheme that Kubiak brought with him from Denver.
19) Eagles - Phillip Merling DE Clemson
The Eagles took a long look at Kenny Phillips here because of the lack of talent at Saftey this year in the draft. However, the lack of size at DE and the potential of Merling were too good to pass up.
20) Tampa Bay - Desean Jackson WR Cal
As much as the Bucs saw talent that could improve their defense on the board, they need playmakers on offense. Desean Jackson is everything that a playmaker has and then some. He will have return duties and provide support for Galloway.
21) Washington - Malcom Kelly WR Oklahoma
Washington is an old team and have a number of glaring holes. Oline, Dline, Secondary. So why didn't they take a player at one of those spots? The reason is they need someone to help the team now, when they still have an opportunity. Kelly still being on the board and providing some much needed size at that position was too good to pass up.
22) Dallas - Aqib Talib CB Kansas
Anthony Henry is solid, but Talib could be spectacular. He is just the playmaker this secondary needs opposite Newman(plus it adds a little rivalry kansas vs kansas state).
23) Steelers - Antoine Cason CB Arizona
Cason was a four year starter at Arizona and proved to be a playmaker. With as much pressure as the Steelers provide up front, they need that security in the defensive backfield that Cason can provide.
24) Titans - Brandon Flowers CB Virginia Tech
Flowers is the perfect physical corner for a defense that prides itself on physicality. He will provide just as much run support as pass support for that defense and pair up with last years first round pick Griffin to start the makings of a great secondary.
25) Seattle - Kentwan Balmer DT UNC
This is a need pick for Seattle, will Tubbs make it back? They flat out just need better talent on the inside.
26) Jaguars - Mike Jenkins CB South Florida
Jenkins stays in Florida, Mathies is a good CB but he needs a better running mate in Jacksonville. Jenkins can provide that as well as big play ability.
27) San Diego - Gosder Cherilus RT BC
He is a solid fit for the Chargers scheme and they need to keep updating that Oline to keep that team great.
28) Dallas - Felix Jones RB Arkansas
Do I even need to comment on how he fits in Dallas?
29) 49ers - Kenny Phillips FS Miami
This continues the Defensive resurgence in San Fransisco. Phillips will hopefully develop into the next great saftey from miami.
30) Green Bay - Sam Baker OT USC
The OT's for GB aren't getting any younger and they need some good depth to develop behind them.
31) Giants - Jerod Mayo LB Tenn
He is just too gifted to pass up at this point and can fill in for the two departed LB's in Free Agency.
32) Miami - Dan Connor LB Penn State
He will help with the transition from old to young. From Jason Taylor to Chris Long, from Zack Thomas to Dan Connor.
33) Rams - Devin Thomas WR Michigan State
He is too good for the old Rams WR's to pass up. Bennett isn't the answer there.
34) Atlanta - Brian Brohm QB Louisville
Its just too fitting of a story to have Petrino leave and Brohm arrive.
35) Kansas City - Limas Sweed WR Texas
With Otah in the first and Sweed in the second. The KC offense is going to get its QB protected and defenses honoring the pass.
36) New York Jets - Quinton Groves OLB Auburn
If the Jets believe Groves can play OLB, he is the steal of the draft at this point.
