Am I masochistic? (1 Viewer)

So I play an array of rec sports and am fairly young (late 20s).  I am athletic and tend to be one of the better players on any team I play on (not bragging, just is what it is).  While I play in these leagues for excersize and social times, I also like to go all out, and don't mind getting hurt or injured. In fact, I relish at getting hurt.  I want kneed in the stomach today and got the wind knocked out of me, got an elbow to the face with sunglasses on and have a large gash going up and down my nose, and highpointed a ball and came down directly on my back, once again knocking the wind out of me.  I loved each moment of it too.

So am I masochistic or is this normal man stuff?

Normal competitive spirit, go for it.

Be careful who and where you play though, I got a serious injury playing public basketball once, lunatic went for my head, I ended up in the hospital.

Lost a front tooth in rec floor hockey (guy who barely played had little control of his stick and caught me off a face off).  That sucked, since it cost $7k, but when getting hurt doesn't require money to repair, in a competitive environment, there's something so primal and instinctive about it that I feel proud.  Sounds dumb to say (I'm also several beers in), but that's how I'd describe it.

Enjoy it while your body holds up...you'll be paying for it later.

I was going to add: on behalf of everyone around you, chill the F out.   Seems like you have a pretty laid back tempriment though.
When I first started playing, I really was that guy.  A complete doosh.  But I've learned to relax and just enjoy it all, but I still enjoy coming home with some sort of mark.  Not that I aim for that at all, but I definitely enjoy it.

Plus, I'm a short guy, so I kinda have to be pretty laid back.

Yeah you are a little crazy, never heard of anyone wanting to get hurt.  With a name like Captain Amazing, can't expect you to be very modest

You're the ####### dip#### that undercut me while i was in the air on a fast break in rec league with zero chance to block my shot. Yeah I broke my ankle when I landed on you. That was 20 yrs ago and I still get sharp pains in it once in awhile. I hope you get full body arthritis and have to shop in a rascal.

See? Not stingy with the likes.

I refused to play rec league hockey in law school because I figured I'd lose a tooth, just like the post from the OP above. No doubter not playing, no brainer. I am no masochist, other than posting on this message board.

Someday hopefully the prospect of getting hurt will be so financially penalizing that you eventually back off.

I felt like you did to a lesser extent as a teen with nothing to lose.

As is beginning to be mentioned, it's not about you getting hurt; it's about you causing others to get hurt.  While you may not mind the injuries (yet), others may.

ETA - Now that I'm about to turn 40, you realize the injuries you sustain at your age really begin to catch up to you.  I thought the shoulder and knee injuries I sustained from playing basketball in my 20s had healed themselves.  A few years later I realize, "Not so much."

This. I avoid people like the OP like the plague. Not saying you're a doosh or anything OP but, honestly, you sound like an "unintentional doosh." One of those that goes out and gets people hurt because you think you are playing in the NBA or whatever and just got totally overboard. Believe it or not, some people like to play just for fun and don't really desire a couple hours in the ER because of your over zealous style.

Can you please describe in detail how good of an athlete you are?  And while you're obviously tops on the local teams, how would you fair regionally or even nationally?
