***American Idol Season 13*** (1 Viewer)

This Rush Week thing going from 15 to 10 singers without hearing them sing again seems like they are trying too hard to find new twists. What are the odds that the guy that got saved last night doesn't even get to sing tonight? Theoretically, he should not make it to top 10, since you have to assume those two were #14.15.

Last night was awful. No reason for having a top 30 if they all don't get a chance to sing. None of the girls impressed me last night.

Yah, I'm not a big fan of it. I thought the singing last night was pretty awful for this this late in the show as well. Pretty much what Jennifer Lopez said, the emotions from not knowing if you're going to get to sing, then the emotional high of being chosen, then having to run on stage and sing was just too much for most of them. And I was looking forward to hearing the "rapping country" girl again, thought she had a good sound.

I said the same thing to my wife, no way the country guy even gets to sing tonight with this new format since he barely made it into the top 15.

My thought last night as my ears were bleeding, and my dogs ran from the room, during the "roar" song was..

5 singers aren't even going to be given a chance over this :tfp: ..

Seriously??

At our house we were wondering about the remaining 5 - why bother if they were not going to get a chance.

I did think that I heard Seacrest say something about 3 judge picks though - but they never seemed to explain it -so maybe it was something else

Supposedly, the ten were picked based off of what the judges saw and heard during rehearsals.

The judge picks are after final 10 guys and girls that go down to 5 on Thursday based on fan votes. Then the judges each get a pick. Total = 13. American Idol Season 13. Cute! :(

the girls last night were damn awful. the top 5 girls from last season were all better than anyone who sang last night. yuck. if that's the best they've got, there's a serious lack of talent this season.

A couple of good performances last night. That was it. The rest were very ho hum.

The nurse was great. She really sang strong, gave a great performance, had wonderful tone, dynamics etc. She is a top 5 girl.

The tuba player is seriously a strong singer. She is out of her kazoo.....but strong. And I liked the girl who Harry gave a hard time about the lyrics and why would you want to sing that......that was a very uncomfortable scene there for her. I can see she was clearly annoyed by it.

Those three clearly stood out from the rest. I agree about the whole 15 and only 10 get to sing.....what is that bunk? Awful to bring those kids there and just drop a bomb like that. Bad form producers......really bad form and bad television IMO.

Pretty much agree with this. What's the point in all of these gimmicky plot twists, or whatever you want to call them? Why have a top 30 (as opposed to 20 or 24), when only the top 20 are going to perform? Stupid. And, having #30 and #31 face off in a nationwide vote makes even less sense... The winner has zero chance of performing tonight, given that the same three people (the judges) who selected them are the ones who are making the cut from 15 to 10 (and they're really not performing in between those two decisions being made, so there's essentially nothing to change the judges' minds about them, in relation to the rest of the group).

As much as I've enjoyed HC Jr's point of view (and humor) so far this season, he has a tendency to be a bit weird (too weird) once in a while. I first noticed it when he would automatically assume that certain singers (during the auditions) wouldn't be able to hold up throughout the entire competition. It seemed almost entirely arbitrary, in some cases. Yet, others were given a pass, when they clearly had flaws.

As for last night, I have no idea why he made such a big deal about that girl's song choice. If she was 15, then maybe that makes sense. But, still... Don't you think that conversation is better to have taken place BEFORE you let her sing on-stage in front of America? I mean, if Harry is really that concerned about what song she is choosing, you would think maybe he would have said something to her earlier. It's not like song choice is a last-minute surprise to the judges. If I'm not mistaken, they spend a LOT of time with these contestants, during the days spent practicing before each weekly performance. Weird, and and girl was clearly caught off-guard, especially after her initial thought/reaction was probably that he was simply going to wish her a happy birthday. The look on her face, after his series of questions, was like "WTF?!" If Harry is going to question people's song choices every time there are (arguably) inappropriate lyrics, it's going to be a long season.

Edit for spelling/grammar.

I thought the girl with the "inappropriate song" was just more manufactured drama. Randy told her in advance the judges don;t like that and she said she heard Connick's reaction when another singer sang it for their audition. I like her BTW.

I kinda thought that was stupid. It was a song that he gave her a hard time about the lyrics when she tried out, because he thought she was too young for the song. So why go back and sing the song again when you know he is going to bring that back up. Dumb. Not to say she didn't sing it well, just that why give the judge an automatic reason to criticize you.

I don't think the judges spend any time communicating with the contestants, they can watch, but the don't talk to them. That was part of what Randy Jackson said was fun about his role-switch. He was able to communicate with the contestants more.

You're probably right. And, since ten of the top 13 get in on votes, her decision to sing that song might actually help her (I think people will pull for her after the "drama" with Connick). As long as she's not fighting for one of the 3 wild card spots. Even then, it might have helped her, since the judges are probably told which 3 they need to pick, based on who is going to help the ratings the most.

She sang it for her audition.
She sang Jessie J's Mamma Knows Best for her audition. Someone else sang it (I think they said in Atlanta) and Connick reacted the same way. She said she saw that audition on TV.

That's probably accurate as well. I was thinking that, based on their comments, the judges obviously know all week what songs the contestants choose. But, that doesn't necessarily mean they get to talk to them, I suppose.

Man, Randy is looking old.

Oops, my bad.

I didn't know what she sang, but was pretty sure it was different because, she is one of the ones they wanted to stick closer to the style of original audition. I think Marielle was the other.

I've got to think that the 5 dismissed girls & guys have to come back into play at some point, otherwise what was the point of even dragging them along? I guess it could have been the producers wringing more drama out of the "will they or won't they" top 30 choice, but if that's all it was, then it's dumb.

Overall thought the guys did much better than the girls. They just seemed like better performers. Might have been the benefit of going second. They were able to hear the judges criticisms especially about trying to be less nervous.

:2cents:

The guys killed it tonight. 8 of the top 13 should be guys as the judges should use all 3 of their wildcards on guys. Incredibly surprised the guy who had to be voted in was in the top ten.

As for your last part, was "Orange tie" the one you are talking about?

Be great if a Rocker finally won this.. Caleb Johnson. :headbang:

I like Caleb Johnson and CJ Harris, I think, the best of all the contestants. Guys are way better than the girls this year IMO. Of the two "country" guys, I think I like the one who played the electric guitar (Ben?) the best. I want to hear the one guy sing another song before forming an opinion (the one who Harry said finished on the 9). That's the first I've ever heard him and can't decide if I like him. The dark horse of the guys, I think, is the shy dude, Sam Woolf.

The young girls will probably vote heavily for the last guy in the white jacket, though he sounded awful.

Here is the video of his (Alex Preston) "Final Judgement" it shows some more of his playing.

I think these will both be teen girl favorites. Sam kind of occupies the Phillip Phillips space. I actually wondered if they held Spencer for last because he was kind of cocky. He should do Say Something again during live shows if he gets the chance. That is a money song for a piano player. Would have been great for Angie Miller.

Alex was very good, but may be too geeky. And Ben, who won the elimination, was pretty good. It was surprising that he sudddenly was top ten esp. since JLo specifically commented that he was just okay in rehearsals. I bet Keith advoicated for him/

If he lasts, I bet Sam Woolf will get significantly better the more times he gets to be on stage. Hopefully he will be more comfortable.

I think he will get better as he goes too. Nice voice, just needs experience in front of those cameras.

 I like his voice... he's quirky, weird facial expressions while he sings.

My two favorites for the competition are Sam Woolf and Alex Preston. I didn't think Sam did his best last night, but listening to his youtube channel, the kid is really good. And the more I listen to Alex the more I like him. I still think it'll be an all guy top 5, opposite of last year. Unless some girls just start knocking it out, I don't remember any of them standing out throughout the process and they were just bad on Tuesday.

Alex Preston should win this in a landslide. If he didn't look so goofy it would be a no-brainer. He won't get the young girl vote - that's the only thing that could beat him. He needs Sam to lose. I like country, and some of the guys are good, but Keith said it best - there are a 1,000 of them fronting bands today that sound exactly the same.

Alex is the only one (if you didn't look at him) that has a style and uniqueness to be a star. Nobody is even in his league. Will he win? Maybe not. Is he the most talented and will he get signed? Absolutely.

Overall pretty weak talent this year which is too bad since the judges are a major upgrade this year. I'm also thinking if they knew how well the judges would work this year they would have put the brakes on a lot of the format changes they made.

Alex is the most gifted, and I liked Ben even though I don't like country. that dreamy eyes guy was bad, as were a couple others.

there's really no one that I can root for yet. maybe Alex, because I like when the truly talented people triumph.

It's mind-boggling that he's just 17. Watch his videos of 3AM and Babylon on Youtube, the kid has serious chops. Maturing a little on stage and being more comfortable are the final steps. I think he could win the whole thing.

I don't get the love for Woolf. I think he's boring and his vocals aren't that great. As far as nerdy guitar players goes I like Alex alot more.

I don't remember his name but that last kid (pretty boy) is going to be tough to beat. The teenage girls were flipping out over him before he even took the stage. He was horrible last night but I'm not sure that's going to matter.

I haven't watched his youtube videos so that probably would change my mind. Last night I thought Alex was much better.

Sam is shy, not nerdy. The first guy, Caleb, has a huge, likeable personality. The guys standing up and supporting each other more than the girls was because he started it. He has the potential, though, to become a caricature. Is he the one the judges said reminded them of Rock of Ages?

Watch his Youtube videos, he's much better when he's comfortable. You can see it in his performances as well, as he gets a bit more calm he really starts nailing it. If he gets over his shyness/stage fright, he'll be tough to beat. Hell, I love his cover of Hey Jude

Alex is pretty good too though. He'd kill it on the radio. But as other posters have alluded too, his looks will be the one thing that keeps him back.

I might be biased being from living Nashville, but the country guys just don't do it for me. It's not that they arn't good, but it sounds like just about everyone else on a Friday night walking down Broadway. I imagine one of the three will make it into the top 5 overall, as the Country following is usually pretty strong up until the end, the one thing that would hurt them is those votes being split amongst all 3 country singers.

I really wish they didn't have any country singers on the show at all, but at least the ones this year aren't nails on the chalkboard like Scotty McCreary. My wife and I would both wince when he came on and one of us would dive for the remote to either mute it, fast forward or change the channel.

I brought the fact that the guys were more supportive when we were watching it, and my wife said that is just guys being guys. I kinda think of it the other way, you normally see a bunch of girls being more "huggy" the girls couldn't even sit next too each other, and the one next to them barely gave a hi-5.

Caleb has a great voice but he really needs to dial back the cheeseball broadway Meatloaf knockoff shtick about a billion percent.

Also, Radioactive from Imagine Dragons is probably one of my favorite pop rock songs to chart in the past 10 years, but I really don't need to hear it sung on this show ever again.

The Music industry could use another Meatloaf character.. Too many  acts now days.. Although we get more a Jack Black vibe from him ourselves. :headbang:

. The dark horse of the guys, I think, is the shy dude, Sam Woolf.

The young girls will probably vote heavily for the last guy in the white jacket, though he sounded awful.

Heresy

Have to agree with you on both points. Especially the latter. I'm amazed at the talent in that city. I've gone to bars after CMA Fest and were blown away by people who I thought might have even sang better than the artist I just watched at huge LP Field. Maybe country's easier to imitate, maybe it's easier to hide imperfections - I don't know. But you find way more serviceable country singers than any other genre IMO.
