***American Idol Season 13*** (1 Viewer)

Is it just me, or does the Voice just tower over AI talent-wise? I mean, 75% of the top 24 wouldn't stand a chance of making it past a knockout round on the Voice. Terrible.
I agree with the voice talent being "better". age-limit has something to do with it, and it seems less about plucking an unproven kid from anonymity (back-story) and more just trying to get celebrity singers to banter with each other while picking already talented/professional singers.

that said- remember that Voice winner who... did anything? AI is a machine- even the pretty crappy kids get at least one big album out of it, and of course some of them have become huge, legitimate stars. the Voice seems resigned to be a TV show only.

eta: I did notice that AI borrowed some of that Voice banter format for the auditions- allowing and showing much more Harry joking around and micing the production team to get a laugh-track going. pure steal there- but it made AI better... because ultimately, IMO, the singing talent show thing has played itself out.

I know the lack of superstars is an issue for many, but being just a TV show doesn't bother me at all. Idol cut back on the anonymous singers thing this year, too. In addition to the three Voice contestants, Nick was on AGT last Summer, Qaasim starred on a Nickelodeon show, and Lovey has already had her name changed (from Kiersten) by a manager or agent.

I can see why as simply a watcher of the show that it wouldnt bother you. That being said, If I or my kids had talent, no way I go to the Voice over AI.

It's been stated on here previously, but I have been telling my wife for the past 2-3 weeks that Clark Beckham will win the whole thing. The guy's got chops! He's got a little Phillips, Taylor Hicks, and Ray Charles all rolled into one!

No age limit, and the Voice allows people who have already had a contract to audition. I'm not sure if that's still the case, but I know AI had stricter age limits and you weren't allowed to audition if you've already been under contract.

My brother-in-law's fiancee tried out in Nashville this year. Got a yes from Keith but no from J-Lopez and Harry, who told her to come back next year. She's pretty good, but admittedly just another Nashville country singer. You'll find a dozen of her walking down Broadway.

In addition to the age limit and the contract thing, people need to realize the Voice has hundreds less contestants that make it on TV. It would be like AI starting with the top 24. Those doing the blind auditions have already been given several "yes" answers before we even see them. I realize AI contestants have also been given yeses, but again, the volumn is different. We are seeing the best the Voice has to offer right from the begining.

True. Idol is definitely more about the whole journey thing.Voice is just starting next week, but the two shows' finals will probably be around the same time.

Not a fan of the way The Voice, eliminates contestants so fast once they have made the top 10 or 12.

They do 2, for a couple of weeks, then 3 one week. Then you have a final with 3 in it. Way to fast.

Love the blind auditions though.

I just got caught up on Idol last night.

I like the huskier (ok, fat) frizzy hair kid.

Hmm. Brother-in-law's fiancee. So he got a divorce from your sister? Would he then cease to be your brother-in-law?

Just trying to make sense of it.

I always hate these kinds of things.

Like my father's coworker was the next door neighbor of Jeff Torborg's barber when he managed the Mets.

as in, to swing?

Really liking the faster pace of the live show so far. They're not wasting time on back stories and crap.

Clark Beckham absolutely killed it last night. Looks, chops, stage presence, the entire package. If I was the next guy I would have just conceded and walked home!

The science kid was extremely disappointing. He sounded flat and out of breathe. And it seemed like he missed his place a few times. He's usually much better so pretty disappointing for his first live show. I'm sure he'll get a pass because Rayvon sounded terrible also.

Say what?

Disagree wholeheartedly. He is old school R&B and is a pro.

Different strokes I guess. I will admit I have not been a fan of his at all this season, and decided he was boring within the first ~15 seconds of his song last night and then got up to get another beer and take the dog out.

Rayvon is one of my early favorites, Hope he makes it.

I am curious to see how predictive this is.. Someone posted as of this morning how many views each had on You Tube of their performances.

Adam Ezegelian: 8,996
Michael Simeon: 7,743
Savion Wright: 7,975
Mark Andrew: 9,941
Trevor Douglas: 9,297
Clark Beckham: 14,698
Rayvon Owen: 9,585
Daniel Seavey: 13,849
Riley Bria: 7,605
Quentin Alexander: 16,567
Nick Fradiani: 15,027
Qaasim Middleton: 16,506

This would send home Michael, Adam, Riley, Savion. The only one that would surprise me is Riley, who has the Country Boy lane to himself.

Is Riley the 16 year old blonde kid? Not a fan of his either.

How many are getting axed this time around?

Also, I really think they're missing the dynamic of someone like Simon. Getting annoyed with the judges afraid of saying someone had a bad performance. Guess they're trying not to sway public opinion too much.

Yes, but I think he is 17. .They are cutting four boys and four girls this week and then two and two the following.

The judges comments this week may have been a function of the short time. THey'll have more time to be critical with fewer contestants.

that wasn't a "live" show, though- was it? seemed like it was taped and edited.

This round was taped. Also, after recently hearing about stations speeding up TV shows to fit in more commercials, I wondered if they didn't also do that. Some of the phrasing seemed rushed. After this week, there will either be fewer contestants or a longer show (I think), so the pace should slow a little.

ETA- Article on speeding up shows via compression.

also- felt like most of the performers showed their nerves... understandably. particularly with the beginning of songs, which were routinely off-key and time.

I didn't really like any of the performances that much, but thought the Clark guy and the styley guy (who sang the Screamin' J tune) were the best of the group. Prince/Cameo/Jame Brown and younger boys (country blonde and aw-shucks kid) were next. the smooooooth R&B guy with the hat did a good job too.

sideshow bob XL didn't do it for me- way too schticky, although he sang as well as anybody else.

Clark is the best, but I'm pulling for Quentin also. I know Qaasim will get a lot of love for his energetic performance, but the vocals kinda sucked.

I thought Quentin was amazing. And not so much his voice. He just was potent in his stage presence and emotion. It oozzed off the screen. He was the real McCoy. Hungry.

I feel Quentin, Rayvon and Qassim were clearly great performers very comfortable with who they are and what they do. I expect those 3 to be there most of the show this season. And also Savion Wright was outstanding.

I think the one no doubt axe will be:

Daniel

I can't see this 15 year old kid surviving the first cut. He is in way over his head.

Adam "Jew Fro Fozzi" Ezgelian is also a very likely cut. I mean the guy had me in stitches and for entertainment value I hope he sticks around....but that was a karaoke act last night. His facial expressions though.....reminds me of a cheap Jack Black knock off. He does have a great set of pipes...no doubt..he can sing. But top 12 American Idol contestant? I think not.

The Country kid did not sing well last night, was clearly nervous, but he may have a shot at sticking around because he has the look, can play a good guitar and has a lot of potential.

Michael Siemon chose the worst possible song, but he has the look and voice. He should stick around.

Nick IMO is sure fire goner. Way too old and contemporary. He is no pop singer. This show is about finding a pop star fist and foremost.

So goners IMO for sure are:

Daniel

Adam

Nick

agree about the Jack Black thing, which came across as really insincere to me.

Daniel is the aw-shucks kid who played the mandolin? no way he goes home anytime soon. I think he makes top 10 of boys/girls easy.

Quentin is the dude in furs/style? I liked him too- great presence over a really great voice- and I think America won't like his style after a bit.

The farmer kid was pretty dull. could/should go home with jack black, and dunno.

the older guy is a pretty solid pro singer... not sure if he's terribly original or will resonate with the demographic- might go home too.

Yeah Lenny Kravitz look going on last night. I think his soul and raw emotion is good enough to carry him far in the show. And I think he can only get better if he embraces every song he sings.

Does any know if this is the 1st year of the 20 call limit or if it was in place last year, also, when they added more ways to vote? That could impact results if my assumption is correct that it is probably teen girls who are most willing to hit redial for hours.

They added the google vote last year.

Thx, but did they restrict phone votes then, too, or is that part new this year?

ETA- Look like they 1st limited phone voting last year at 50 votes (per contestant), then reduced to 20 this year.

Wow, that Joey chick doing an Urban song with an accordian...balls. No way she goes far IMO but that was one of the most unique performances I've seen on this show.

Man what an amazing song choice. Absolutely loved it. Easily the hottest performance of the night. Big fan. She's a Kill Bill fan too...no question crazy in the sack.

There may be better talent going to The Voice, but I think it's a pretty horrible format and doesn't really produce any lasting talent.

Who is the biggest star to come out of The Voice? I honestly don't know.

As for AI, I think it's a travesty that Jaq is not in the top 24. They must be grooming her for next season.
As of right now the biggest star to come out of The Voice is probably Cassadee Pope.

The top three in my opinion are:

1. Cassadee Pope

2. Daniell Bradbery

3. RayLynn

All of them are from Blake's team and all of them have had some decent hits in country.

Stupid pink-haired accordion girl is in and hot talented Jaq is out?? Give me a break.
:goodposting: No idea how that makes the show.. She has zero chance of winning..

Fun as a Novelty act sure.. in a Weird Al type of way... good for a laugh or two here and there..

A singer people want to listen to on the radio or on a CD, which is what AI is about.. hell no.

She's not mainstream but there is currently a big niche market for this kind of voice. She deserves to be here for sure.

The person I don't understand is Katherine Winston. She was just bad and very plain.

I don't think Jaq was good enough to win this year but since she's only 15 I think they are wanting her to improve and come back next year. She's definitely the type of person that could win the whole thing.

Girls overall were very unimpressive as a group. Really blah.

The true stand outs were easily:

Jax. She has star written all over her!!!

Alexsis (she is a country pop star waiting to happen).

Tyanna (although the song she did stunk and did not show off her amazing range).

Quentin's got a Sly Stone/Prince thing goin on. I think he's gonna be tough to beat.

Jax is the best of the girls in my opinion.

I was rooting for the kid who looks like 4 but I thought the moment overwhelmed him. He's trying hard though. I'll give him that. The fat fro kid seems like he's trying to be a repeat of the guy who won last year. Big guy belting big songs. Think he needs to show some more range.

The final 8 guys are pretty strong for the most part. I think the kid is the weakest, but there are 3 or 4 that could be the best of the bunch.

My early impressions are that they are a stronger group than the girls. Pretty good cuts, though I'd have preferred to keep Savion over Adam. The loss of Trevor/Michael/Riley should give little Daniel a great shot at Top Ten..

Also, FWIW, the YouTube views numbers I posted above were a good predictor. The only miss was Trevor over Adam and their numbers were pretty close.

Adam seems like a parody act. He might be able to sing, but no way in hell is he a contender. And that Daniel kid seems lost up there. Would have much rather seen Savion and Michael Simean (is that his name) advance than those two.
