An Explanation About Why The Bikini Girls Thread Vanished (1 Viewer)

I cancelled the thread. Normally, I would never do that, but a moderator saw fit to change the title of it without consulting me or anybody, for that matter. I tried to set up a relatively light-hearted thread about feminist excess, buoyed by the Japandroids' Wet Hair lyrics. Bikini Kill is a band, mid-90s, that made a splash in Olympia, WA for being a riot girl band, dead set at any patriarchal leanings anyone may have about women.

Japandroids fire back: "These girls are all bikini kill, we need a ride to bikini island." I'm sure most of us have felt that in our lives. It's a light-hearted poke at feminism.

But that gets at something deeper. When does American feminism become puritanism; see: James, Henry, The Bostonians.

Maybe we can pick it up and start again.

I was disappointed to see it go. Obviously we have some fundamental disagreements, but it's an interesting and important issue to discuss.

It lives on here, really. I just was protesting the moderation a bit.  I'm more than willing to take up the discussion here.

Feminism is basically an obsession with you isn't it rockaction? I'm not sure Gloria Steinem spent as much time thinking about it as you do.

A little bit, but it was really an excuse to use song lyrics to start an interesting thread. Once the song lyrics were quashed, the whole spirit of the thread was gone.

It wasn't heavy-handed at all. But, yes, I suspect that modern feminism to me is what old-school feminism was to Henry James; and why he expatriated himself from both Boston and America.  I think he saw, in Victorian feminism, what I saw at at school. I suppose my psyche is interesting; but it's not really an obsession, more like an observation about modern manners, much in the way Tom Wolfe wrote about them.

eta* Also, I worked in the PAC world where feminism was huge and have had several very, very feminist girlfriends, one of whom was an officer in the Feminist Majority Foundation on campus. It's on another level with me, I'll admit.

There'd be no need for that lyric by the Japandroids if there wasn't excess. I just want to explore it and find out why the pushback by MRAs (of which I am not) and PUAs (also of which I am not.)

Honestly, when you delete pages of discussion in which you’d been continually trying to backtrack what you had very clearly said and which had been repeatedly quoted so that you couldn’t re-frame all of you arguments in a way that completely changed your premises, I don’t have much interest in re-starting the discussion.  But I wish you luck.

Whoa. It wasn't bad faith at all. I'll be glad to bring up all the old discussion, Henry. I'm not scared of it at all. I was pissed at the moderation. I think my points stand about the OCR and Title IX and burdens of proof and Duke and UVA.

I won't ever delete again. I'll just take out threads complaining about moderation if that's what this takes, but that's a bit risky and I've been told uncool.

You said OCR burden of proof shifts caused the mattress girl and UVA issues. There’s no there there.

No, I never said that. I talked about feminist excesses. OCR was only a part of that. And OCR wound up disciplining the Columbia student and hanging him out to dry.

You in fact said that you thought the guy in the mattress girl situation had been expelled because of the OCR change. I’m not misremembering.

There was a list of four universities.  UCLA was one.
No there wasn't. That was tim listing where his daughter applied. I made a comment about universities in general. Regardless, I'll never delete a thread again. I'm making a more radical claim here, anyway, so you should run with it.
