An NFL Record that NO ONE is talking about... (1 Viewer)

I've only seen it mentioned once all season, but this week we saw perhaps the most impressive record in NFL history extended by at least 2 more seasons. With a humiliating loss to Carolina, Atlanta has now officially extended its NFL record streak to FORTY years without back-to-back winning seasons. Actually, it's extended its streak to at least FORTY-ONE years, since there's no way they can possibly end it next year.Out of all the accomplishments in NFL history, this to me is the most impressive (followed in close second by the 98 yard punt the Jets boomed against Denver in 1969- It's the one football record that is simply unbreakable.)

I think "impressive" does not mean what you think it means
Not true.im·pres·sive (adj.)

Making a strong or vivid impression; striking or remarkable

I think it's INCREDIBLY remarkable that in 40 years, Atlanta hasn't strung together back-to-back winning seasons yet. Don't you?

Don't worry, it is in the game recap this week... :)

It has to be Vick's fault.

With Schaub in there they would probably never have a losing season.
They would be 16-0 without Vick, don't you know that? The year following the Superbowl, the Falcons lost Jamal Anderson for the year. Chris Chandler then stayed hurt.

The year following the first year Vick went to the playoffs, he got hurt in the preseason, and guys took over that have had trouble getting a job since.

This year, it seemed like all their defensive players got hurt and stayed hurt. Not to mention Vick suffered a hamstring injury, which is why he tried to stay in the pocket during a stretch of games. The schedule wasn't that kind either.

 It just seems like after a winning season, things just go bad.

yeah, nice effort to have a non-winning season, too ... from 6-2 to 8-8? more proof that vick is overrated.
I think he's one of the problems, but I also think that coaching is a problem. It seems like the coaching staff have failed to make the adjustments at half time that are needed.

No way they can win 9 games next year?J

They'd have to do it next year and the year after, so no, they can't end it next year, either.

Thanks HK. I see what you mean now.J

I won some cash knowing this going into the season. The great Colin Cowherd said at the beginning of the year that this was his lock. Way to go Colin.

Did they break the record on non=losing seasons?
Before this year, they did have the all-time longest run of consecutive seasons without two straight at .500 or better at 26. But they snapped that string. The current record for consecutive seasons without two straight at .500 or better is also the all-time record, and it belongs to the Cardinals. They have not had two straight .500-or-better seasons since 1983-1984.

But the Cardinals are not the answer to either of the trivia questions I posed above.

Hi blackjacks,Cowherd called the Falcons losing more than 8 a lock this season? Interesting as much as he loves Vick.

PS - I don't always agree with him but Cowherd is my favorite radio guy lately.

OK, trivia time.

Who has the second-longest streak (all-time)?

Who has the second-longest streak (current)?
Bucs? Bengals?
Bengals is correct for the second one. The last time they had two straight winning seasons was 81-82.Bucs is not correct on the first one.

I think there a few more guys on that Falcons roster than just Michael Vick.Throwing the ball to Brian Finneran and Michael Jenkins isn't going to get you many wins.

Case in point - Alge Crumpler leads the team in receptions.

Show me another team that had a TE lead in rec.s -AND- had a winning season.

Also...

Which team has the current longest run of years without two straight losing seasons?
Denver would be my guess...
Denver has the current longest run of years without two straight non-winning seasons. But not the longest run of years without two straight losing seasons.

Denver has the current longest run of years without two straight non-winning seasons. But not the longest run of years without two straight losing seasons.
Miami then?
Bingo. 1968-69 was the last time Miami had two straight losing seasons. That's the longest run ever.

I'm betting KC has done that at least once, but anyway.....Maybe that's because not only is Crumpler one of the best TEs in the league, but Vick can't throw with any consistent accuracy beyond 5 yds, if that. GB the "athletic" QBs.

I guess having two #1 WR picks starting doesn't matter either? ....well actually I guess it doesn't when the QB throws the ball in the dirt, way behind you, or way over your head. (PS: Finneran sure isn't flashy, but you could do worse for a #3)

Well at least he has that amazing scrambling ability. I mean just look how he tore em up yesterday, just like he's been doing all year, and.....

oops never mind. :bag:

Did he once again go out of the game with a tear in his panties or some such after a DL looked at him cross-eyed?

lmao @ the "great" Vick.

I saw an interesting bit of trivia this past week. The Packers have never won a game after trailing by more than 14 points. I couldn't believe it. But it was in the Packers record book.

Don't forget his pick for Miami to win 7+ games. He's money.

How about the 2005 Chargers???BOLTS STATS

And without digging, KC had to have done this at some point with Gonzo...

With thier loss to the Redskins yesterday, the Eagles became the first team in NFL history to go undefeated in their division one year and winless the next. :lmao:

I think the word "pathetic" would be most applicable here.

Both definitely apply. I'm certainly impressed with how pathetic the Falcons have been.

How about the Saints - they stank until Mora came to town from his stint with the USFL Stars - and he brought some players with him, too.

Gonzalez has led the Chiefs in receptions EVERY season from 1998-2005, also leading in yardage some years. Records are 7-9,9-7,7-9,6-10,8-8,13-3,7-9,10-6.

Really? That is pretty astonishing.

Considering how hard it is to sweep your division, this is not too surprising.Never done when there were 5 teams in a division (8 games) - again not shocking.

Go Tampa. :boxing:

San Diego finished 9-7 and Gates led them in receptions.

He sure does have man love for Vick but he called it right before the Indy vs Atl.He also went something like 7 out of 8 on his guarantees duringcollege football season.Unfortunetly here in Stl. we don't get him anymore, instead we have to listen to a boring local guy. I use to love listening to him and spanning the globe was by far the best part of any radio show, but I can't get it anymore.

Speaking of definitions, this seems appropriate:

Trivia

Main Entry: triv·ia

Pronunciation: 'tri-vE-&

Etymology: (assumed) New Latin, back-formation from Latin trivialis

: unimportant matters : trivial facts or details; also singular in construction

Emphasis mine.
