I read the column yesterday Matt - good stuff as usual. But there is a big difference in the guys on your list - guys who have been in the league and would be pretty ready to plug in after they learn the terminology (never underestimate the importance/difficulty in that btw) like Choice or Goodson and a lot of developmental guys who aren't as ready as Stephens-Howling but more experienced than Antonio Smith.
BUT here is a question we rarely see addressed - we just see the fallout from it............IF the Cardinals were to bring in a more experienced guy (and I don't think they will right away) - What does that do to the psyche of Beanie Wells? He really needs to take the job and wrap both arms around it and run with it. If they bring in a Choice who may be fighting for carries, on the sideline rooting for Wells to drop another ball to get into the game, is Wells strong enough to handle that challenge in addition to the pressure (and bumps) of being THE man?
Arizona has a pretty substandard run blocking OL right now. I don't think Beanie Wells or anyone else is going to have an impact with what they have right now. Wells doesn't show a lot of burst or speed at this level in the NFL, so it would seem he is a guy that either has the break tackles or have bigger holes to run through. The OL just compounds things in the running game.
I don't think the Cardinals have to worry about the psyche of Wells. If they do, then they picked the wrong RB. A good player should thrive from competition and believe in himself. If he pouts then this game isn't for him.

Well you may be right about a GOOD player....but this IS Chris Beanie Freakin Wells................and there is a reason he dropped for the bottom of the first round for the Cardinals to pickAnd Matt I think you are competely underestimating the psychological effects that a lot of the players deal with - and so are most NFL organizations

While I do agree with this, we have to remember that the line was upgraded this year. With King and Heap at TE, and the signing of College at left guard, the line should be improved from last year. Also, Wells was hurt most of last year, and the QB was non-existent, so if Beanie stays healthy I see him having a pretty decent year.Matt's article is interesting because with Beanie's injury history, the Cards are in some real trouble if he goes down, as they have absolutely no one behind him right now that can carry the load. I am not so sure that any of the guys listed would be able to step in and help, but it is an interesting exercise to try to figure out who they will be bringing in.

No offense, but any player who makes it to the NFL has been in competition for starting spots and plays all their life. It's the name of the game. And even if they have always been the star, there were always guys behind them ready to fill in. I don't think anyone imagines the guys on Matt's list would come in and take the spot from Beanie, unless he got hurt or totally sucked. They need depth at the position, period. They will have to bring in depth. Whether that guy will have a chance to compete for the starting job is a different story.

Uh, what? The one thing that Beanie has showed most at an NFL level is burst and speed. Heck, it's his lack of patience (he keeps "bursting" into the backs of other players) that is his biggest issue. All the reports out of this preseason about Ryan Williams were about how he had great vision and cutting ability but couldn't even compare to Beanie in the burst and speed departments.
