Andrew Walter released by Pats (1 Viewer)

Maybe they go with just the 2 QBs to squeeze in an extra RB?

Makes you think Brady's doing o.k. I figure.

Don't be silly. No team has only 2 QBs. Heck, they even have rules for 3rd QBs.They don't have to "squeeze" in the RBs . . . they've carried 5 guys the last few years, not sure why suddenly people would be shocked if they did again.

Slater's injury last night makes room too.they'll have 3 QBs and all 5 RBs on the roster.the RBs with NE are always a war of attrition.whichever one gets the carries will do fine.

I'm nearly certain that some teams have gone with only 2 QBs in the past. Perhaps the Colts?
They may have had only two QBs on an active roster, but there is a specific rule allowing emergency/3rd QBs for games. IND may have had a QB deactivated or on the practice squad if they needed one, but they would have had another guy in the wingsThe Pats don't even have that. They have only two guys.

 The Colts have rolled with Manning and Sorgi for years now. For the first time in what seems like forever, they're probably going to carry three this year after drafting Painter.
As I just mentioned, there's a difference between having 2 QB ACTIVE each week and not having three QBs in the organization (could have been deactivated or on the practice squad).

who has been the Colts 3rd QB in recent years?just picked a random gamebook from last year and there is no QB listed on the inactive list:

I guess they did have Josh Betts and David Greene on their practice squad at points though.

In 2007 there were 4 teams that only had 2 QBs on the roster for at least part of the season (including the practice squad) -- Atlanta, Green Bay, Houston, and Washington. Not sure about 2008.edit: I think Atlanta had 3 QBs, not 2. Green Bay signed Craig Nall in December, but went most of the year with only 2 QBs.

Teams have to designate who their emergency QB before each game each week. There are rules as to when that guy can come in without penalty to the team. I believe that if that player is used before the 4th quarter, the other QBs cannot reenter the game. Maybe the Colts waive the right to name someone before each game . . .

I'm aware of the rule, but some teams prefer to use that extra roster spot on a non-QB. Many teams never use their #3 QB all season anyway, particularly a team like the Colts or the Packers when they have Favre. They may have a player from a different position already on the roster that can serve as an emergency QB. The rule doesn't specify that a team HAS to have a 3rd QB on the 53-man roster.

So who was the backup to Rosenfels when Schaub was out for a month in 2007 for the Texans? I'm still not sure that these teams had no one else in reserve. Most roster lists indicate that a player would have had to actually appeared in a game to get listed . . .

You seem to be confusing the fact that a rule exists which allows a team to name a 3rd string emergency QB that doesn't count against the active roster for that game to mean that a team must carry 3 QBs. Some teams do not carry 3 QBs on their 53 man rosters though to save the roster spot. The Colts have done so for a few years and other teams have done so before like others have said.If you remember the year that Vinny Testeverde went down in game 1 for the Jets (1999), Tom Tupa (their punter) had to quarterback the team until the fourth quarter. Why? Because the Jets only had two QBs on the 53 man roster at the time and Rick Mirer was listed as the emergency 3rd QB with Tupa acting as the punter and backup QB - they were trying to save the active roster spot. Of course in an "only on the Jets" moment, Tupa threw a TD pass and kept them in the game only to have Rick Mirer blow the game for them when he came in during the fourth quarter and threw and int that was returned for a TD.

In any event, the Pats are very unlikely to go without someone else with Brady coming off a major injury and Hoyer with no experience and hardly any knowledge of the Pats playbook.

The last game I saw at Soldier Field did feature Nall slangin' TDs on the Bears.

I think I saw INGLE MARTIN rolled out by Denver (?) last week.

The Bears might pick up Walter now, heard they were interested before NE signed him.

Long shot but maybe the roster spot is for another position say WR - keep Edelman (media calling him a Welker clone) who played QB in College. Gives team the "position flexibility" that BB likes. They have used him as the wildcat QB in practice.

OR

The are just going to sign some other cut from this weekend.

I've heard a lot of discussion on the first part, and the thought was that the lack of experience would prevent that from being a real consideration. They are looking for someone who has played and knows what he's doing to a certain extent.I wonder if Cassel is available . . .

Recently released Damon Huard would be an option if they don't trade for someone. They may be watching the cuts from today and tomorrow too before deciding whether to trade for Feeley or McCown or TJax. Maybe they bring Gutierrez back after KC cuts him. He knows the system. Tarvaris Jackson is a possible cut if MIN keeps Booty instead, which is likely from what I've read. Frye and Gradkowski in OAK, one there will be let go. McCown in TB will be cut if not traded since I doubt they part with Josh Johnson. Broncos just cut Ingle Martin. So there are some options. Not great options, but when you are looking at cut players, or players readily available via cheap trade, you don't expect them to be great options.
