Oh, so you want to pay for reviews that contractors paid for and/or bribed people to write. Interesting.
Throw darts at the phone book and mail me the $20 Angie's List fee? I'd ask for referrals from people I know. You need to know a guy who knows guys. Otis has a whole thread on this concept. It's the way business is done.Oh, so you want to pay for reviews that contractors paid for and/or bribed people to write. If it wasn't a good company though, there would be bad reviews as well. If a company has entirely good reviews, they must be doing something right. I don't hire contractors so I have no skin in the game, but it seems like this type of service serves a purpose.Oh, so you want to pay for reviews that contractors paid for and/or bribed people to write. I'm a contractor. No idea if I have a review on there and it doesn't worry me one bit. As for the bolded, I could start under a new company name and have 20 well writing good reviews in two weeks and then have a couple added each week. When a bad review was posted, rinse, repeat. It happens...a lot.For a handyman to hang a ceiling fan you're probably going to find a friendly guy that will probably do the work properly. For any true trade, ask someone, anyone. It's a billion times better than trusting the internet. If it wasn't a good company though, there would be bad reviews as well. Yeah, I can see evening out the bad, but fabricating an excellent profile would take a crap load of reviews. If your reviews are great, you're going to get a lot of business. Even if you're an average contractor, that's going to lead a ton of bad or neutral reviews. So you're going to have to pay a ton of people to write a lot of good reviews. People that get bad service have a much higher tendency to leave a review than people that receive good service. This approach has worked extremely well for me with ebay and amazon. I know you don't pay for those reviews, but its the same concept.I do a agree that referrals are a great way to get good service, but I'm more of an introvert, as you can see, and the internet is my resource.I'm a contractor. I just have no idea why anyone would trust Angie's List AND pay for it. Talking to people is free.
Who gets charged $20? My membership is only $5 for a month of access and I just cancel after I find what I'm looking for. It's actually much easier than getting a suggestion from a friend.I'm not sure you know how Angies List works.Throw darts at the phone book and mail me the $20 Angie's List fee? Don't you have to pay to get a membership to even leave a review? So you think a contractor is going to shell out $35 x 20 ($700) just to leave some good reviews and then keep doing it as bad reviews are left?Yeah, I can see evening out the bad, but fabricating an excellent profile would take a crap load of reviews. Hardly any contractor has all rave reviews. Maybe someone just getting rolling, but a contractor with 30-40+ reviews is going to have some bad stuff. You go through the reviews to see if they're serious deficiencies with the business like "they stole my money and never returned calls" or if it's little BS stuff like, "he showed up 10 mins late", etc.I would be skeptical of any contractor who had nothing but rave reviews.
I don't think that. Battles is the one that thinks that. I think something like Angie's list gives a pretty good assessment of a contractor especially those with a large quantity of reviews.Don't you have to pay to get a membership to even leave a review? this is a tangent, but I really get a laugh at the clowns that leave a bad review on Amazon not b/c of the product, but b/c of Amazon. Something like "I love the product but I gave it just one star b/c Amazon too an extra day to ship it". Totally skews the product's average review for something completely out of control of the manufacturer.Hardly any contractor has all rave reviews. Hard to find toys are fun too. People go nuts giving one star reviews because they think the price is too high.this is a tangent, but I really get a laugh at the clowns that leave a bad review on Amazon not b/c of the product, but b/c of Amazon. I used to work for a company in NYC and that was the essence of our business. We collected a pool of experts in the hundreds of thousands and investment banks and hedge fudge managers and the like would pay us to essentially set up meetings with them.Ill charge people to write and read reviews. Brilliant!!!!!
I'm now skeptical of using Battles for any work in my house.'Sea Duck said:I would be skeptical of any contractor who had nothing but rave reviews.

My total was $18.72 for the bundle for a year. We're moving, so this should come in handy.
Interesting. I looked up catering businesses in Lexington, MA and found a Johnny's Cakes with nothing but bad reviews.I thought it was crap if it was free. Now they expect me to pay for it?
Have your wife ask on facebook. We did this recently and it worked out very well.Anyone who subscribes want to do me a solid and find a good appliance repairman in the Northville, MI area?
Done. I've gotten the usual "dry your clothes outside for a nice fresh scent... of course they won't thaw until June." responses.Have your wife ask on facebook.
