Raul Ibanez?. The Cubs have interest in free agent outfielder Raul Ibanez, but so do the Mets. And the Mets may have more money to spend. ...
Wouldn't mind a D Lee / Adrian Gonzalez swap in a Peavy deal. What about the Cubs trading away Derrek Lee (and maybe eating some of his contract), and then breaking the bank for Teixeira? They desperately need a LH power bat.

If the Cubs manage to re-sign Ryan Dempster and still have a shot at Jake Peavy, will they have enough money remaining in the budget for Kerry Wood? He ranked fourth in the National League with 34 saves and is expected to be pursued by the New York Mets, among others. Most take it for granted that Wood will return, based on his close relationship with Hendry and his 14 years in the Cubs organization. "I don't think he'd be happy anywhere else," former teammate Mark Grace said during the World Series. -- Chicago Tribune
i dont know where i read it, but he wants like 14-15 mill for 4-5 yearsa little much if you ask me.I say pony up the dough for Dempster.Peavy is/has been a great pitcher, but he's flyball pitcher........and last time I checked, Wrigley wasn't made for long flyball outs. If they somehow can get both, let Kerry walk.......move Marmol into the closers role.
And that's the end of Kerry Woodhttp://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune....wave-bye-t.html
Cubs wave bye to Wood
By Paul Sullivan
The Kerry Wood era in Chicago began with a bang and ended with a thud.
On a cloudy November afternoon in Chicago, the Cubs quietly cuts ties with their free-agent closer, who tied a major-league record with 20 strikeouts in his fifth big league start in 1998.
After acquiring a potential closer in Florida's Kevin Gregg on Thursday morning, Hendry announced the Cubs would not try to re-sign Wood, who will be able to accept free-agent offers from other clubs on Friday.
Hendry met this week with Wood and his agent, Pat Rooney, and told him the Cubs were going in a different direction.
"I think we all feel that Kerry is certainly deserving of a three- or four-year contract," Hendry said. "He’s done everything this organization has asked for the last 14 years, been a warrior the last couple of years. He's come back and health-wise stood the test of time, taken the ball every day we needed, and had no hang-ups, except for (missing one month with a blister injury).
"We’re just in a situation, as Kerry fully understands, that that length of deal, for the kind of salary he’d command right now, is not our first priority. We certainly have to finish our rotation, we have offensive situations to address, and by having the prominence that (Carlos) Marmol now brings to the table, it certainly doesn’t come before the other needs we have. We felt it was time Kerry goes out and does what’s best for him and his family, and gets a huge multi-year deal if possible."
Marmol will be the favorite to win the closer’s role, with Gregg on standby in case he fails.
"We’re not crowning certain people in November," Hendry said.
Hendry has a close relationship with Wood, and said the move was made in the best interests of the right-hander, who finished fourth in the NL with 34 saves and figures to command a deal worth up to $50 million for four years on the free-agent market. Last year Wood agreed to a one-year, $3.5-million deal, declining higher offers to remain a Cub. He told Hendry to give him what was fair, and Hendry said he didn’t want other clubs making offers to Wood with the feeling he’d simply return to the Cubs at a lower price.
The Cubs were only interested in re-signing Wood for one year, and are hoping to re-sign Ryan Dempster to a long-term deal. Hendry would not comment on the other Cubs free agents, though Henry Blanco is expected to get an offer, while Bob Howry and Daryle Ward likely will go elsewhere.
Are the Cubs going to sign the Big Unit?

Unlike Sores, I would have to say no to this Johnson. Are the Cubs going to sign the Big Unit?

we dont know either. wood did say he would sign a one year deal.WTF is going on in Chicago? I realize this isn't the hotbed of progressive baseball thinking, but giving up Ceda for Gregg and letting Kerry walk? I just don't understand it. I guess the money Kerry wants for 3 years is more than the Cubs are willing to spend and I understand that, but don't they only have Gregg for one year? Didn't Kerry say he'd sign a one year deal? Ceda was reported to be untouchable in the Brian Roberts dealings and now he goes away for Gregg? I just don't understand what's going on up there.
I like the Dempster signing.
For Pie, not likely.
I am mostly hoping this is pointing to the fact that the Cubs are done with Soriano leading off.furcal?
The Cubs also are interested in free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal, who is seeking $10 million per year for three or four years after hitting .357 in 36 games for the Dodgers in 2008. Furcal's agent said they have spoken to the Cubs, but it's "nothing serious" yet.
Cubs signed outfielder Joey Gathright, who had been with the Royals, to a one-year contract.Ideally, Kosuke ####udome, Reed Johnson and Felix Pie would all outplay Gathright next season and the Cubs would never have reason to turn to the speedster on their way to the first World Series victory since 1908. Ideally. Gathright fell from .307/.371/.342 in 228 at-bats in 2007 to .254/.311/.272 in 279 at-bats last season for the Royals. There's nothing wrong with carrying him as a 25th man, but he looks like a downgrade for the Cubs bench.
For some reason the Cubs enjoy signing outfielders who strike out constantly and play awful defense. I have trouble seeing how he fits in the outfield with Soriano in left, Pie/Edmonds in center, and Kosuke in right. They do need to make some kind of splash though. Cub fans are starting to expect a winner and two first round sweeps in a row is pretty frustrating. There have been rumors that the Cubs are going to go hard after Adam Dunn.Supposedly, Lou is adamant about acquiring a LH power guy and is relentlessly bending the ear of the Cubs G.M. (Jim Hendry). With the sale of the team in flux, top management is not keen on taking on a huge multi-year salary and would prefer to sign a lower level guy such as Milton Bradley. What do Cubs homers think?
Unless they plan on moving Soriano to right, I can't see how this would work. This offseason is a bit frustrating since all the hitters available have been the 1B/LF/DH type and the Cubs have those spots filled. Of course, if they are getting a Bradley, what is the big difference defensively with Dunn in right. As hitters, I would like Dunn more since he gets on base 35-40% of the time even if he isn't hitting while Bradley surprises me when he puts together a full season. For some reason the Cubs enjoy signing outfielders who strike out constantly and play awful defense. I'd have to disagree.Seems to me, the rest of the division is getting weaker, while the Cubs have stayed pretty much status quo.For some reason the Cubs enjoy signing outfielders who strike out constantly and play awful defense. Agreed. I am happy so far that the Cubs have not spent a lot of money on players that might only provide slight upgrades overall. I didn't like the Ceda for Gregg trade but I have hope that I will be proven wrong. I also glad that they exited trade talks for Peavy, the Harden trade of lesser prospects than a Vitters might prove to be a bad deal in the end for the Cubs. The Cubs are the favorite in the division right now. My hope is that they concentrate on building up on that farm system and utilizing draft picks instead of signing free agents that require compensation so that when Lee, Ramirez, and Soriano decline to average players (Lee might already be) they have prospects to replace them through promotion or trades.I'd have to disagree.Seems to me, the rest of the division is getting weaker, while the Cubs have stayed pretty much status quo.For some reason the Cubs enjoy signing outfielders who strike out constantly and play awful defense. I'd rather see them spend/trade for the player they "need" around the trade deadline or the ASB.
Miles adds center and shortstop to DeRosa's versatility. He is a solid contact hitter of course with less power than DeRosa, but his ability to play short could mean an extra solid bat on the bench.I don't know, I really liked DeRosa's bat in that lineup.Guy can play anywhere.
O/U on average games per year.I'd open it at 92.5ESPN reports that the Cubs and Milton Bradley have agreed to terms on a three-year, $30 million contract. That was the expected amount, but it still looks like a pretty poor deal for the Cubs, especially with Pat Burrell signing for $16 million over two years on the same day. Bradley may or may not still be an above average defensive outfielder. What we can be relatively certain of is that he won't be a healthy one for long. Bradley has played in 130 games just once in his career. He's an underrated star when he's on the field, but he's not worth a $30 million commitment.
If he plays 95% of his games throughout the contract and doesn't pull a Latrell Sprewell on Lou Pinella, then I think he'll have lived up to that contract because when healthy, he's dangerous.A MUCH better signing than Ibanez, but still filled with a lot of question marks.Ughhhh!!!!

for some reason i see a lineup like this....sorianofontenotramirez bradleyleesototheriot####udomeSo where does the Bradley signing leave the lineup? I'm assuming he'll be in the middle, but where? And where are they going to put Soriano? Please tell me he's not at the top again this year...I'd look for ####udome to have a better year and there's no way Bradley plays all year. I'd bet Hoffpauir gets over 200 ABs in right and at first and that's not considering one of Milton's injuries. I'd really like to see this lineup:Theriot####udomeRamirezBradleyLeeSorianoSotoFontenotIf the Hoff shows he can play I'd like to see them ship Lee out for whatever it is they need at the break. Never going to happen but it'd be nice.
