RIP :( Wow. *What* a player. The last video in the article you linked is particularly awesome. His tone on that Strat is amazing and his use of open strings in the intro was cool. Not one wrong note in the whole performance. Also dig the insanely high crash cymbals on the drummer's kit.

One of my best friends was the lead singer in a band with Smokin Joe way back when in Texas (25-30 years ago). I heard tons of stories. Went with my buddy to see him twice in California, the first time at the Majestic in Ventura and the last time about 2 years ago at this little bar in the San Fernando Valley. Man could he shred. He had lived a hard life. Battled his weight and demons. But was in great spirits when we saw him. Cool guy. Even for a guy of his talent it's a hard life. Him and the guys in an old van driving everywhere.

Really, really talented. RIP Smokin Joe...
